Planet English Version 3

DVD/Virtual CDs Overview

This document is designed to give an overview of the new features in Planet English Version 3 that
support the use of DVD drives or the use of Virtual CDs. Before either of these scenarios can be
implemented, a full understanding of how Planet English uses the CDs to access the media is
required.

The Planet English workstation application is responsible for the majority of the processing in the
Planet English system. Planet English also encompasses extensive media resources, which come in
three forms:

• Video
• Audio
• Control data

These media resources are stored on 10 individual CD-ROMs; eight content CD-ROMs, one
Assessment CD-ROM and one Pronunciation CD-ROM. The different CD-ROMs are required
when accessing different areas of the Planet English program of study. The total size of all ten
Planet English CD-ROMs is 3.69 Gigabytes. Planet English Version 3 has the ability to support
the use of all media on a single medium, such as a DVD or a hard drive.

Planet English DVD Edition

Planet English DVD Edition is now available for centres that have DVD drives in their
workstations. The PE DVD is a single disc and contains the entire content of CD-ROMs 1-8, as
well as the Assessment and Pronunciation CD-ROMs.

Installation:

To configure Planet English to use the DVD edition, follow these steps:

1. After installing a Planet English workstation, open the C:\ummw folder

2. Locate and open the ummw.ini file using Notepad
3. Locate the following entries in the ummw.ini file
LocalClass=C:\UMMW\tmpClass\
REMHOST=TEST-SERVER
REMPORT=1000
CDROM=D:\UMMCD.INI
4. Change the CDROM=D:\UMMCD.INI entry to point to the DVD drive letter
5. Insert Planet English DVD into your DVD drive.

6. Start Planet English workstation

Planet English Virtual CD Edition

Planet English Virtual CD Edition uses the same file structure as the DVD edition, but the media is
stored on the local hard drive of EACH workstation. The media CANNOT be stored on a shared
network resource, as this increases network traffic to impractical levels and severely degrades the
proper operation of Planet English. Extensive testing under these conditions has been performed to
support this position.

There are certain requirements that must be met before a Virtual CD system can be implemented.
Please ensure the following:

1. The operating system of EACH workstation that will use Virtual CDs MUST be Windows
NT Workstation, Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional. This is due
to requirement for local file-level security.
2. Ensure that EACH workstation that will use Virtual CDs has a minimum of 3.69 Gigabytes
of available Hard Drive space. However, for the proper operation of MS Windows, it is
recommended that a minimum of 4 Gigabytes available Hard Drive space exists.
3. A complete and authorised copy of either Planet English DVD Edition, or all 10 Planet
English CDs (to create a file-base) is available and correctly licensed.

Installation:
1. Install Planet English on a single workstation.
2. Create a new folder on the hard drive you want to use to store the media files. This folder
should be called PEDVD.
3. If you are using the Planet English DVD Edition, copy the ENTIRE contents of the DVD
into the PEDVD folder. If you are using the 10 Planet English CDs, follow these steps:
a. Insert CD1 and copy the entire contents into the PEDVD folder
b. Insert CD2, copy the entire contents of this CD into the PEDVD folder, but Select
NO if asked to replace/overwrite existing files.
c. Repeat process with CDs 3-8, as well as Assessment and Pronunciation
4. Open the ummcd.ini file using Notepad
5. Modify the contents of the file to read:

[Directory]
Audio=Audio\
Video=Video\
component=\

[Control]
Name=Planet English CD DVD
ID=CD D
Version=0.1600.0
Installation=17 Feb 2000
Maintenance=17 Feb 2000
Server ID=000000

drive, created in step 12.

17. Start Planet English and log in a student. Your Lesson Menu should look like this:

18. Once the Virtual CD system (or DVD Edition) is in place, users can potentially access
content from any of the Planet English CDs. However, as content is still controlled through
the CMS, users only have access to content that has been assigned to them.
19. You should now ensure the following:
a. Verify that students can log into the network on this workstation, start PE and access
all of the CDs.
b. Verify that teachers can log into the network on this workstation, start PE and access
all of the CDs.
c. Make a backup of the Entire PEDVD folder, and replicate to other workstations as
necessary. DO NOT share this folder across the network to other machines, as this
WILL have adverse effects on network performance and stability and compromise
Planet English proper operation.
d. If you use an imaging solution (such as Symantec Ghost) to maintain your
workstations, make sure you update your workstation image to reflect changes.
