The Australian College of Neonatal Nurses Inc is the peak professional body for nurses working in
neonatal care in Australia, with membership representing all states and territories in Australia. ACNN sets
standards for nursing practice, advises on education programs, fosters research and supports national and
international alliances. ACNN holds an annual conference attracting 100 to 150 delegates. The conference is
advertised on the website, in state newsletters and by email.
Invited speakers
Professor Paula Meier is the Director for Clinical Research and Lactation in the Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit and is a Professor of Women’s and Children’s Health Nursing and a Professor of Pediatrics at Rush
University Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Meier has conducted numerous externally-funded research
projects, and currently serves as the principal investigator for a 5-year, $2.76 million NIH-funded study,
Health Outcomes and Cost of Human Milk Feedings for Very Low Birthweight Infants. She has published
over 65 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and serves as a member of the International Society for Research in
Human Milk and Lactation and of the Health Advisory Council for La Leche League International.
Associate Professor Sandie Bredemeyer OAM is currently the Clinical Nurse Consultant for Perinatal
Nursing at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. Sandie is one of the most experienced and highly
regarded neonatal nurses in Australia, completing her PhD on the effect of body positioning on the incidence
of apnoea in the preterm newborn. Her clinical expertise and formal lecturing skills enabled the introduction
of the neonatal practitioner training program at RPA Newborn Care. Achievements for improved patient
outcomes include setting up and managing the human milk donor program that was introduced into RPA
Newborn Care in 2005. This program is targeted to the high-risk very preterm infant.
