PURPOSE
To prove a clear Job Description for: Deck / Galley Boy

JOB DESCRIPTION

Description:

The deck/galley boy’s tasks primarily include the maintenance and upkeep of the dish station in the galley,
maintenance of the galley and associated spaces and equipment under supervision of the chief cook
together with the maintenance and upkeep of the inside of the accommodation, under the supervision of
the Chief Officer. This may include cleaning, laundry, organising stores, cabinets and cupboards, along with
thorough cleaning of accommodation spaces, bulkheads, etc. The deck/galley boy is required to keep their
work station clean and sanitary as well as assist in general galley and accommodation spaces cleaning
projects as assigned by the Chief Cook.
The Deck/Galley Boy’s job shall not be confused with that of Messman. The Deck/Galley Boy must not serve
food at the table, nor should he be assigned to regular/daily officers’ cabin cleaning.
A deck/galley boy may never take part of navigation or harbour watch.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
 Dishwashing: Properly pre-rinse, pre-soak, rinse, wash and sanitize each type of plate, silverware, pot,
pan, utensil, and glassware.
 Galley: Assist in cleaning the galley after every meal. Assist in maintaining proper food handling and
storage procedures in accordance with applicable guidelines. Assist with trash removal and disposal.
 Accommodation spaces: Assist in maintenance and upkeep of accommodation spaces

Safety and Security:


 Participate in on board safety training, meetings and drills as directed by the Captain; including fire,
abandon ship, man overboard, flooding and medical emergencies.
 Complies with all applicable sanitation requirements.
 Participates and successfully completes shore side training as required by the company.
 Maintains familiarity with all duties under the company Safety Management System including Emergency
Response Activities.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and
must have followed basic HACCP training.
