BATextileDesign2010workintegratedlearningprojects
TheBAtextiledesignprogramwouldliketothankandacknowledgethe
followingprojectpartners.Theirenthusiasm,timeandindustry
knowledgehasenrichedtheprogramacrossallthreeyearlevels.
MatttÇfirstyearcomputeraideddesignproject
TheMatttprojectprovidedstudentswithauniqueopportunityto
bementoredandguidedbyasuccessfulMelbournedesigner/
manufacturerusingprintandpatterninproductdesign.Students
wereaskedtodesignpatternrepeatsusingAdobePhotoshopsuitable
fordigitalprintinginaccordancewiththeMatttdesignaestheticand
currentrangeofhandmadebags.
AvedaÇfirstyearcomputeraideddesignproject
TheAvedaprojectrequiredstudentÌstodesignt-shirtgraphicsto
supporttheAveda,Earthmonth,Walkforwatereventfor2011.
StudentswereaskedtodesignagraphicusingAdobePhotoshopto
celebratetheevent,whilstconsideringthet-shirtsrelevanceandlife
postevent.Inadditionstudentswereaskedtoresearchappropriate
t-shirtsandprintingmethodsinaccordancewiththeAvedaphilosophy.
LifelineGippslandÇsecondyeartextilestudioandcomputeraided
textiledesign
Thisprojectrequiredstudentstoconsiderboththeenvironmentaland
socialaspectofsustainabledesignwhilstdesigningasofttoy/textile
productandsystemfortheGippslandbranchoftheLifeline
organisation.IncomputeraidedtextiledesignstudentsdevelopedËhow
toÌinstructionsusingAdobeIllustrator.Togetherwiththesofttoyand
system,Lifelinehaveatriedandtestedmethodforupcyclingunwanted
textileswhilstengagingthelocalcommunityincraftworkshopsforall
ages

Thisprojectgavestudentstheopportunityto;research,explore,create
andrefineconceptsforchildrenÌsbedlinenandassociatedaccessories.
UndertheguidanceofHiccupsdesignerNatalieRyan,students
developedhandpaintedartworkinaccordancewithoneoftwothemes,
ËkinderhausÌorËtellmeastoryÌ.CongratulationstoBreeJanes,Hannah
Hughes,SarahStricklandandDaniPellyfortheirfirst,secondandhighly
commendedawards.
FairTrade/MoralFairgroundÇthirdyeartextilestudio
ËConversationsÌÇanindustryprojectwithFairTradeandMoral
Fairgroundaimedtostartaconversationaroundhowweasdesigners
dealwiththemulti-dimensionalaspectsofsustainabilityanddesign.
Howdowedevelop(andensure)trulyethicaldesigns?Aboveall,how
dowecommunicateËseriousÌdesignthemesrelatedtosustainabilityin
anappealingandcreativemanner?Studentsdevelopedcontemporary
conversationalprintdesignsforasociallyconsciousfashionconsumer.
Reflectinganaspectofsustainabilityand/orFairTrade,thedesigns
creativelyexploredhand-generatedartwork,translatedfordigitalprint
outcomes.ThesedesignswillbeshowcasedattheFair@Squareevent
atFederationSquareinDecember2010

Finalyearstudentsparticipatedinabedlinendesignprojectwhere
theyusedtheirCADskills,tocreatearangeoftextiledesignsfor
DoonaCovers,SheetsandPillowcases.Theyhadtheopportunity
todesignforeitheradultsorchildrenandtoconsiderissuesof
Sustainability.Thisisavaluableprojectthatreinforceshowcreativity
andcommercialoutcomescanbeachieved.CongratulationstoMilly
Gamlin,HannahNeeson,JulieNewton,MarinaWilsonandRachelMyers
fortheirfirst,second,thirdandhighlycommendedawards.
VillaAlba:themuseumasadesignresourceÇthirdyeartextilestudio
FinalyearTextileDesignandCommunicationDesignstudentsworked
incollaborationwiththeTrusteesoftheVillaAlbaMuseumearlierthis
year.Theprojectfocusedondocumentingthedecorativeinteriorof
VillaAlbawithstudentsproducingarangeofmonographs,promotional
materialsandtextileproductsforaproposedmuseumshop.The
outcomesweredisplayedinJulyattheDesignMadeTradeshow,which
ispartoftheVictoriangovernmentfundedStateofDesignFestival.
Collaborationwithotherdesigndisciplines,industryandcommunity
partnershelpssourcenewnichemarketsforourprogramanddevelops
theprofessionalskillsandcapabilitiesofgraduatetextiledesigners.

AresearchprojectsupportedbytheRMITLTIFprovidedstudentswith
opportunitiestodevelopanunderstandingoftheformsofwriting
forprofessionalpractice,includingonlinetoolssuchaseportfoliosto
developapersonaliseddigitalportfolio.Textiledesignersutiliseonline
forums,websitesandblogstopromoteanddisseminatetheirwork
globally.ThecreationofanonlineportfolioofworkmirrorstheËreal
worldÌpracticeofcreatingandmaintaininganonlinepresence.
