01(a). The support is made by cutting off the two opposite sides of a sphere that has a radius r 0. If the
original height of the support is r 0/2, determine how far it shortens when it supports a load P. The

02(c). A beam is made of a material that has a modulus of elasticity in compression different from that
given for tension. Determine the location c of the neutral axis, and derive an expression for the
maximum tensile stress and maximum compressive stress in the beam having the dimensions

cylindrical vessel wall as a function of pressure p0, diameter d, wall thickness t, Young’s

(B). Assume the vessel is made from steel [ut = 400 MPa, yt = 200 MPa,  = 0.30, E = 207 GPa,
and e (50 mm) = 25%] and the external pressure, p 0 = 20 MPa. If the vessel has an outer
diameter of 125 mm, wall thickness of 6 mm, and length of 400 mm. Determine changes

05(b). The aluminum strut has a cross-sectional area in the form of a cross. If it is subjected to the
moment M = 8 kN.m, determine the bending stress acting at points A and B, and show the results
acting on volume elements located at these points.
