2002

Why ?
„ It allows you to predict the behavior of a
chemical process by using basic
engineering relationships, such as mass
and energy balances, and phase and
chemical equilibrium

„ You can simulate actual plant behavior

by given reliable thermodynamic data,
realistic operating conditions, and
rigorous equipment models
„ It can help you to design better chemical
plants, and allow you to run many cases
and perform analyses in order to
optimize existing plants and design

Where ?
„ Process simulation is used in Research and
Development for:
„ Interpreting bench-scale and pilot plant data
„ Process scale-up and feasibility studies
„ Process simulation is used in Process Design for:
„ Comparing alternative process designs
„ Developing heat and material balances
„ Designing process equipment
„ Evaluating process performance at different conditions

Special Features
„ Event Driven
„ Hysys combines completely interactive
calculation with instantaneous access to
information. Whenever you supply a new piece
of information, Hysys automatically re-
calculates all items affected by the change, and
immediately displays the updated information
in all locations.

„ Built-in Intelligence
„ The Hysys property packages know when
enough information is available and perform
the correct flash calculation automatically.

„ Modular Operation
„ Each unit operation or stream can perform all
necessary calculations, whether the information
is specified in the operation itself, or
communicated from the attached streams.
Whether complete or partial, results are passed
bi-directionally (forwards and backwards)
through the flowsheet.

Process System Engineering Lab. 7

2002

„ Non-sequential Solution Algorithm

„ You are not required to build a flowsheet in a
specific manner or direction, nor are you
required to instruct unit operations to begin
calculations, Based on the flowsheet topology
and supplied information, every stream and unit
operation affected by a change is automatically
calculated.

Primary Interface
Elements
„ PFD
„ Graphical representation of flowsheet, showing
the connections among the streams and
operations.
„ Build and examine your flowsheet, and display
detailed process information using
customizable material balance tables.

Process System Engineering Lab. 9

2002

„ Workbook
„ A collection of pages which display
information in a tabular format.
„ Display information about a specific object type,
such as streams or unit operations.
„ Multiple pages for a given object type,
displaying information in varying levels of
detail.

„ Property View
„ Multiple pages of “properties” for a stream or
operation, with each page accessed via a page
tab.
„ Contain all information about a specific object
within a single view

Example:
MCH recovery Column
„ MCH and toluene form a close-boiling system that is
difficult to separate by simple binary distillation. In the
recovery column, phenol is used to extract toluene,
allowing relatively pure methylcyclohexane to be
recovered in the overhead.
„ Evaluate the performance of an existing column for
recovering MCH from a feed stream with a lower
concentration than the original design conditions.
„ Increase the phenol solvent rate to improve MCH
recovery.
