Implementation of

The Gifts of the Spirit

Campus-wide Spiritual Life Initiative

Jarvis Christian College

Academic Year 2010-11
Implementation of
The Fruit of the Spirit
Campus-wide Spiritual Life Initiative

Purpose: The purpose of this academic year’s spiritual theme is to focus the Jarvis
body toward the discovery, development and deployment of our Spiritual
Gifts/Vocation for our Spiritual growth.
Goals:
 Students will give consideration to their "giftedness" in terms of
the more secular language of vocation: the calling to fulfill one's
deepest desire and purpose while meeting the needs of humanity.
 To move students closer to knowing what they will do in life, so by
graduation, they proceed with clarity in their calling.
 To engage students, faculty and staff in conversation regarding
vocation through assemblies and other opportunities.
 To encourage student exploration of vocation through internships,
service projects. and interest and personality assessments.
 To encourage dialogue across the breath of Jarvis family to include
faculty, staff and alumni sharing of vocation journeys.
 To learn what the Scripture says about the primary motivational
Gifts of the Spirit through worship service and bible studies.
 To encourage student "ownership" of the assembly hour with
presentations on the 7 primary motivational Gifts of the Spirit:
Prophecy, Service, Teaching, Exhortation, Giving, Leadership and
Mercy.

Implementation: The Gifts of the Spirit initiative will rely heavily on the assemblies to
implement this campus-wide Spiritual focus. Student groups will make presentations
interpreting each of the 7 primary motivational gifts. These groups will be encouraged to
have guest speakers who will share their vocation journey in the discovery and
deployment of their gifts in the fulfillment of their purpose to serve the world. Service
projects by individuals and groups on behave of the Jarvis family and the community will
be encouraged and recognized. Each of the major divisions of the College: Student
Affairs, Residence Life and Academic Affairs will share in executing the campaign. The
following pages detail the partnership of each of these areas in the implementation of
"I'm God's Masterpiece".

Theme Overview: I'm God's Masterpiece

Discovering, Developing and Deploying The Gift's of the Spirit in
Search of Your Vocation

Each Christian is a MASTERPIECE by the virtue of the

Spiritual Gifts given to him/her by the Master. These
gifts are designed by God to build up the community of
God called the Body of Christ. Each gift is used to serve

2
each other in the development of their gifts. This mutual sharing of gifts is the God-given
process for growth. Giftedness is akin to vocation or call that each Christian has on their
life. That vocation or voice of purpose is manifested in what each person is called to do in
life that will give them their deepest fulfillment while meeting the needs of their fellow
man. Vocation differs from career in that a vocation is self-center, yet not self serving. It
is fulfillment of self and the fruitfulness that comes in serving others. College is a perfect
place for the discussion, discovery, development and deployment of a person's giftedness.
So that, when she or he graduates, they leave with more than a diploma, but with a deep
direction that affirms a Divine Design on their lives. This Devine Design or Masterpiece
is proclaimed in Scripture in Ephesians 2:10:

You are God's workmanship (Masterpiece) created in Christ Jesus for good works
that God has prepared beforehand that we may walk in them.

Our goal is to help each other walk in their giftedness, to discover their vocation. There is
no greater joy than being able to say: "This is what I am suppose to be doing in life. I'm
God's Masterpiece."

Key Image: Picture each Spiritual Gift as a paint brush given by God to each person,
each one different: roller brush, medium brush, tiny brush, etc., based on purpose, i.e.
roller for broad strokes; tiny brush for fine detail. Each brush is used in the painting
(development) of a another person's iDivine Design "Masterpiece-ness". This mutual
"serving" ensures the growth and vitality of the whole community or body. Think: I need
your brush. You need mine.

Key Words:
Spiritual Gifts: Special abilities given by God to believers to serve the Body of
Christ for growth of the church and glorification of God.

Vocation: An inner voice or unction summoning a person to a unique

purpose that gives them the greatest fulfillment while serving
humanity's greatest needs.
“The place where your deepest gladness and the world’s greatest
hunger meet.” Frederick Buechner, Theologian

Talents Natural abilities that a person shows a high level of proficiency.

Key Scriptures: For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for
good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we
should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

And since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let each exercise
them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; 7 if service, in his
serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he
who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with
cheerfulness. Romans 12:6-8

Student Affairs Masterpiece
Student Affairs will:
1. Supervise student assemblies’ implementation of Gifts of the Spirit theme in
terms of scheduling recognized and eligible student organizations for specific
dates on the Assembly calendar. As before, the Dean of Student Affairs is
responsible for this Assembly calendar. (See attached schedule)
2. A portion (at least 15 minutes) of each assembly will feature one the 7 primary
Motivational Gifts of the Spirit listed in Roman 12:6-8. In parenthesis are
secular *near-equivalent vocational language: Prophecy (Communications),
Service (Social Service), Teaching (Education), Exhortation (Encouragement/
Counseling ), Giving (Benevolence), Leadership (Leadership), Mercy/(Care).
*Because Gifts are Spirit-given, there are no direct secular/natural equivalents.
They can be close, but their origins define them differently.
3. To engage the students, during the assembly time (all or part), the scheduled
assembly group will illustrate/instruct/apply the assigned Motivational Gifts in
the context of the life of the Jarvis family i.e. "How can I serve Jarvis/the
world with my Gift (that thing I do that give me my greatest joy and helps
meet humanity's greatest need. ")
4. To engage the students in the "ownership" of assemblies, several methodologies
can be employed to illustrate/instruct/apply the assigned Motivational Gifts
during assembly that may include (but not be limited to):
1. Motivational speakers/ personal testimonies on their vocation journey.
2. Audio/visual presentation (we have new capabilities in the chapel)
3. Drama/skit, music, etc.

Having students, through their organizations, "own" an assembly engages the student in
a "non-classroom" learning opportunity to discuss, discover, development and deploy
their giftedness. Because assemblies/convocation attendance is not required for the
majority of the students, their motivation to attend and participate must come that place
of "ownership". They must want to be there. Competition among the groups is one way
of fueling that "buy in". A ten point assessment instrument is used to measure each
assembly effectiveness. See "Assessment and Evaluation".

5. All assembly programs will have a printed program and will incorporate the
Gift's Masterpiece and Ephesians 2:10 and Romans 12:6-8.
6. At the end of the year, a Gifts of the Spirit Assembly Award will be given to the
organization who executes the best presentation of the I'm a Masterpiece theme.
The Assembly Committee will determine the winner based on the criteria
detailed in the Assessment and Evaluation section. A $200 cash award will be
given by the Jarvis College Christian Church to be deposited in that student
organization’s treasury. The group must be in good standing with the College to
receive gift and have sponsor and bank account. Groups will follow Assembly
guidelines set by Student Affairs and supervised by designated Assembly
Coordinator, Lela Jackson.

Residential Life Masterpiece

Residential Life will:

 Award Masterpiece Service Awards each week to one student from each dorm
who has exhibited service to the Jarvis body in one or more of the seven
motivational gifts: Prophecy/(Communication), Service (Social Service),
Teaching (Peer-to Peer tutoring), Exhortation (Encourage/(Peer-to Peer
Mentoring), Giving (Benevolence), Leadership (Leadership), Mercy
(Care/(Counseling). An example of an awardee could be a student who regularly
tutors a classmate in math (This was witnessed last semester). Winners will
receive a $10.00 gift card from Dollar General Store provided by the Jarvis
College Christian Church for the purchase of basic personal toiletry items. The
principle here is this: Gifts are meant to serve others. Discovery of Gifts/Vocation
begins with participating in service opportunities.

 Post or print student Masterpiece Service Awards winners' names in Residence

Life Newsletter or dorm bulletin board, Jarvisonion, or other college
publications.

 Display Masterpiece posters in all dorms and the wearing of Masterpiece lapel
pins provided by the Jarvis College Christian Church.

 Encourage attendance at all assemblies by all students, not just freshmen or group
on program. Assembly attendance, however, is not the sole responsibility of
Residence Life, but the whole Jarvis family.

 Encourage attendance at Sunday and Wednesday Church that will feature a nine
week sermon series on the Book of 1 Corinthians and the Seven Motivational
Gifts.

6

Academic Affairs Masterpiece

Academic Affairs will:

 Volunteer to team up with at least one organization responsible for a Gift

assembly. This team effort could include:

1. Masterpiece Presenter: Share your life experience that led to the discover
of your vocation and why you are serving Jarvis with that gift.
2. Masterpiece Sponsor: Work directly with student(s) in the preparation and
execution of a presentation to ensure students are in place, on time and
ready with their assembly.

 Encourage attendance of all faculty at Assemblies.

 Display Masterpiece poster in work area or on nearest Area bulletin board.

 Wear Masterpiece pin when possible.

 To direct students to internship opportunities that will put them in an arena of

service related to their major field of study or interest. Often these "real world"
opportunities will either affirm or reject a student's path. Both are helpful in
discovery of that:
“The place where your deepest gladness and the world’s
greatest hunger meet.”

 To integrate in the classroom where appropriate discussion of vocations in the

context of the course study.

 To give personal testimony of the instructor's journey toward their vocation or

bring guest lecturers in the who can share their vocation journey in the field
related to the context of the course study.

 To provide opportunities for written reflections on topics related to vocation

discussion.

Other Masterpiece Partnerships
Office of Career Service

This Masterpiece Gift/Vocation initiative will encourage students to go to the Office of

Career Services to take advantage of opportunities for counseling and assessment of
aptitude, interest and learning styles. While Spiritual Gifts and natural talents and interest
do not have 100% correspondence, there are enough similarities that each exploration
adds value to the conversation of vocation.

With that in mind, the program will encourage students to participate in talent assessment
and career workshops sponsored by OCS.

8
Assessment and Evaluation

This Masterpiece Spiritual initiative will encourage students to take the following
assessment tools. Where costs are involved, sponsorship will be sort through the Pastor's
office.

 Strong Interest Inventory

 Myers/Briggs Type Indicator

 Basden-Johnson Spiritual Gift Analysis
