1. AFT SIMPLEX-COMPACT-SEAL *
Type: SC 2 BC
The aft S.C.-seal consists essentially of the stationary part, the casing with three
sealing rings 31, 6, and the rotating part, the liner 1 with pertaining zinc anodes
87.ln addition, the liner 1 is ceramic-coated in way of the running surface of the
sealing rings 31,6.
The casing itself consists of individual rings which are bolted together 2, 3, 4, 5,
• between which the three sealing rings 31, 6 are housed. The sealing ring 31 serves
mainly.as a dirt deflector, while one sealing rings 6 each seals against sea water, oil
resp.
The aft S.C.-seal is further provided with a pressure control, the significant
advantages of which are as follows:
- The pressure in chamber 11 of the S.C.-seal is exactly set by the tank level;
hence any technically relevant pressure variations will not occur.
- A direct pipe connection between the 20 I tank and the chamber 11 will ensure a
very good functional control of the S.C.-seal.
- One pipe line only will be required for the connection between the tank and the
S.C.-seal in the sterntube.
•
- Since this system operates independently of any other source of energy, a
power failure will not affect the pressure conditions prevailing in the S.C.-seal.
Further details relating to individual parts and materials, from which the S.C.-seal is
made are shown in the enclosed parts list.

2. FORWARD SIMPLEX-COMPACT·SEAL *
Type: SC 2Z
The forward S.C:-seal consists essentially of the stationary part, the casing with
sealing rings 5, and the rotating part, the liner 1 together with the split clamp ring 6.
• The casing itself consists of individual rings 2, 3 and 4, which are bolted together. The
two sealing rings 5 are shaped similar to those of the aft S.C.-seal, and they are
housed between the casing rings 2, 3 and 4.
Contrary to the aft S.C.-seal the two sealing rings 5 seal only against oil, i.e. one ring
5 against the sterntube oil, and the other against the oil in the space between the
sealing rings 5.
When the shaft is rotating a circulator 22 located between the sealing rings 5 ensures
that oil is circulated through the respective S.C.-seal header tank.
Further details relating to individual parts and materials from which the S.C.-seal is
made are given in the enclosed parts list.

1. GENERAL INFORMATION
Before the S.C.-seals are installed, the entire stemtube system must be checked to
ensure absolute cleanness.
Taking into consideration the tolerances shown in the S.C.-seal installation drawing,
the connecting dimensions in way of the propeller, the sterntube. and the propeller
shaft must be checked.
•
It must also be checked whether the design length of the aft and forward S.C.-seal can
bej<eptto.
The S.C.-seal may only be taken from its plastic bag just before commencing with the
installation .The wood blocks which are provided on the housing flange for the
protection of the liner can be removed later.
During the installation of the S.C.-seal the liner must under no circumstances be
withdrawn from the casing in order to avoid damage to the surface and to the sealing
ring lip.
- The S.C.-seal is then taken out of its plastic bag and checked for damage sustained
during transport.
•
- The rubber ring 16 is pushed over the shaft.
- The S.C.-seal unit, with the liner 1 fitted, and the gasket 82, are placed on the shaft
and carefully pushed forward.
- The wood blocks are now removed from the housing flange 2.
- The position of the gasket 82 is then checked, the housing spigot inserted into the
sterntube bore and the S.C.-seal secured using owner-supplied screws.
NOTE: Before the (fastening-) screws will be tighten, the security screws for
transport 14 must be removed to avoid contact between liner and
sterntube bush during assembly. While the liner may not slip out of the
seal.
•
NOTE: A housing which cannot be centered in the sterntube because of the lack
of the recess, or because the sterntube bore is too large, must be aligned
with the shaft.
After alignment is carried out the housing must be fixed in place by
means of two dowel pins.
A housing with recess must be slackened off the lifting gear before the
holding bolts are finally tightened.
- The clamp ring 6 is mounted on the shaft and properly secured by screws 17 after
having been aligned in accordance with the dimensions shown in the drawing.
- The true running of the clamp ring 6 in the axial plane is then checked and
adjusted, if required.
See part 10, table 7-195-1260.
- The liner 1 is then released from the housing and pulled against the clamp ring 6,
by means of the bolts 15, together with the rubber ring 16.
NOTE: Care must be taken that the rubber ring 16 is fitted correctly.
•
- The design length of the S.C.-seal is then checked .
- Centring of the liner 1 is checked simultaneously in chamber III and between the
cover ring 4 and liner flange 1 by using two dial gauges and adjusted, if required.
- Before the S.C.-seal is pushed onto the propeller shaft the latter must be cleaned
and checked for accuracy to size in way of the final position of the liner 1.
- The S.C.-seal in then taken out of the plastic bag and examined for damage
sustained during transport.
- The gasket 80 and the S.C.-seal assembly with the fitted liner 1 are placed on the
•
shaft.
- The gasket 80 is then placed in position. Care must be taken to ensure that bores
in the casing flange 2 are kept clear.
- The wood blocks are now removed from the casing flange 2.
- The S.C.-seal is moved towards the sterntube such that the bores provided in the
casing for the wear-down gauge 15 point vertically up and down.
- The lifting bracket 20 is removed and stored onboard, together with the respective
fixing bolts 21.
- Threaded bores are now sealed, using plugs 22 and packings 19.
•
- The remaining bolts 7 are now tightened cross-wise, and secured using chrome-
steel wire 18.
- The liner 1 is then cautiously pushed into the S.C.-seal casing by a small amount.
- The rubber ring 17, if any, and gasket 81 are then placed in position on the shaft.
- The propeller is now mounted, together with the insert ring if any.
- The rubber ring 17, if any, and the gasket 81 are placed in position.
•
- The liner 1 is then moved to make contact with the propeller and secured by bolts
10 and sealing washers 17, if provided .
- Procedure after fitting the S.C.-seal in accordance with Section 4 of this Chapter.
- The S.C.-seal is then taken from its plastic bag and checked for transport damage.
- The rubber ring 17, if any, the gasket 81, the S.C.-seal assembly with the liner 1
fitted, and the gasket 80 are placed on the shaft in the correct sequence and
carefu lIy moved aft.
- The wood blocks can now be removed from the casing flange 2.
- The propeller shaft is drawn-in in such a way that the forward S.C.-seal can still be
placed on the shaft.
•
- The flat gasket 80 is placed in position whereby care must be taken to ensure that
bores in the casing flange 2 are kept clear.
- The S.C.-seal is moved towards the sterntube such that the bores provided in the
casing for the wear-down gauge 15 point vertically up and down.
NOTE: A housing which cannot be centered in the stemtube because of the lack
of the recess, or because the stemtube bore is too large, must be aligned
with the shaft.
After alignment is carried out the housing must be fixed in place by
means of two dowel pins.
A housing with recess must be slackened off the lifting gear before the
holding bolts are finally tightened.
- The lifting bracket 20 is removed and stored onboard, together with the respective
fiXing bolts 21.
- Threaded bores are now sealed, using plugs 22 and packings 19.
•
- The remaining bolts 7 are now tightened cross-wise.
- The forward S.C.-seal is then taken out of is plastic bag and checked for damage
occurred during transport.
- The gasket 82* and the forward S.C.-seal assembly with the fitted liner 1*, as well
as the rubber ring 16*, are placed on the shaft.
- The gasket 81 and the rubber ring 17, if any, are placed in position .

The electrical insulation of the liner 1* from the propeller and propeller shaft presents
an additional protection against corrosion, and contributes, together with the anti-
corrosive paint, to extending the service life of the sacrificial anodes.
Insulation of the liner 1* from the shaft is effected by means of two guide strips 1-
housed in the bore of the liner 1*. The liner 1* is also centered on the shaft by this
means.
The bolt holes in the liner flange 1* are protected from contact with the propeller by
means of plastic sleeves § and the bolt heads by means of insulating washers
• .§.
The flat packing Z prevents contact with the propeller and, at the same time, S.C.-
seals against entry of water and leakage of oil, respectively.
The area (- - - - -) under the rope guard must be coated with anticorrosive paint. Care
must be taken that paint does not make contact with the chrome-steel liner surface 1*.
The S.C.-seal housing, provided it is not made of bronze, has been treated with an
anticorrosive paint at our works. However, it is advisable to paint this area once more
after installation has been completed.

9.1 GENERAL
The oil tank of the aft S.C.-seal acts as storage tank and leak trap for smaller
quantities of water and / or oil.
When properly positioned with the height of the tank as per Section 5.1 of this
Chapter or part 7 of the drawing "Lube oil diagram for aft S.C.-seal", smaller
quantities of water and / or oil are diverted into the inside of the ship both when the
shaft is turning and not turning.
Slight dripping leaks from the overflow ofthe oil tank for the forward and aft S.C.-seal
•
is not an indication of a fault as long as the quantity concerned (lId) is approx. 1% of
the S.C.-seal size within a 24 hour period.
When greater quantities leak, the valve from the feed pipe for the 2D litre oil tank to
the aft S.C.-seal must be closed.
Similarly, low oil consumption when the shaft is turning is not an indication of a fault
as long as the oil consumption level is around 1% of the above named quantity, or
zero when the shaft is not turning.
The lubrication control extends only to the oil level in the stern tube header tank and
the oil level in the oil tank for the aft and forward S.C.-seal, together with the oil
temperature in the stern tube.
The maximum oil temperature in the stern tube should not exceed 6DoC for sealing
rings of Perbunan, and 11DOC for sealing rings of Viton.
• Higher temperatures can have negative effects on the service life of the sealing
rings.
An oil sample is to be taken from the stern tube every month and checked for water.
Maximum water content 5%.
- The oil in the forward S.C.-seal and in the respective oil tank must be changed
every six months.
- The content of the 20 litre tank for the aft S.C.-seal must be drained every six
months and refilled with new oil.
NOTE: In special cases where the S.C.-seal has an extra pipe fitted for draining,
the oil in chamber 11 of the aft S.C.-seal must also be changed.
•
10. PROCEDURE BEFORE DOCKING THE SHIP
- Before docking the ship, the oil supply is to be stopped by closing the valve in the
supply pipe from the 20 litre oil tank to chamber 11 of the aft S.C.-seal.
See also Section 5.1 of this Chapter.
11. FUNCTION CHECK OF THE AFT S.C.-SEAL BY MEANS OF 20 LITRE OIL TANK
Check system in the ship for leaks; stop any leaks that are found and check the
tank height. See also Section 5.1 of this Chapter.
NOTE: Low oil consumption of up to 1% of the seal size (lId) per day is not an
indication for a fault in the seal. When oil consumption is continuously
higher, the use of a more viscous oil should be considered and I or the
valve in the supply line to chamber 11 should be closed, but opened once
or twice every day for approx. 1 hour to supply chamber 11 with oil.
Oil flows from the overflow of the 20 litre oil tank. See Note.
When oil continuously overflows, seal ring no. 3 may be defect and / or the
connections on the supply line from the 20 litre oil tank within the stern tube are
not tight.
Valve in supply line to chamber 11 to be closed.
NOTE: Slight, drips of oil from the overflow manifold of the 20 litre oil tank are not
an indication of a fault as long as the quantity (lid) per day remains within
approx. 1% of the SC seal size.
• Sealing rings no. 1 and no. 2 may be damaged through ingress of foreign
matter, through wear or S.C.-seal housing leaks:
Seal rings no. 1 and no. 2 may be deformed and 1 or hardened, or otherwise
impaired:
•
See also table 7-195-1260 in part 10.
NOTE: Slight quantities of water entering the 20 litre oil tank are not an indication
of a fault as long as the quantity (lId) per day remains within approx. 1%
of the SC seal size .

1. GENERAL INFORMATION
For all measurements care shall be taken that the '0' mark is always in the same
position, which is punched into the circumference of the flange of the liner.
It will be useful to fit the liner in such a way that this mark corresponds with the No. 1
propeller blade.
After each disassembly of the seal new measured values shall be determined.
