Cellular Network Planning and Optimization.

Assignment II.
Problem 1. Select a Node B product and analyze corresponding specification:
Transmitter characteristics: Analyze its output power, antenna types and gain, connector, feeder
and cable losses, and other important parameters for planning.
Receiver Characteristics: Analyze Receiver antenna gain, losses, receiver sensitivity, thermal noise
density (in dBm/Hz), receiver noise figure and other important parameters for planning.
Problem 2. Study and write the pros and cons of the following empirical path loss models in
terms of application environment, frequency range, reference distance, base station/receiver
heights, correction factors and accuracy. Also make a comparison on how each model
characterizes the small scale fading.
 Okumura-Hata COST 231 -Hata
COST 231 Walfish–Ikegami SUI
WINNER ITU-R M.2135

Problem 3: Study and describe the following antenna parameters:

Directivity Polarization
Half-power beam-width (HPBW) Radiated power
Gain and antenna efficiency Impendence

Problem 4: Define an area of interest (not greater than 9 km2) for which a cellular network is to
be deployed using UTM coordinate system. I.e., from bottom left (Xmin, Ymin) to upper right (Xmax,
Ymax) inkilometers. Organize the following information in tabular form.
Choose environment types as urban, suburban, rural, hilly terrains or others to qualify the
deployment area.
Estimate the population density.
Set coverage requirement in terms of the minimum required signal level (eg. -100dBm),
capacity in terms of subscribers, traffic demand forecast (say in bps), available bandwidth
for the operator, and quality as area coverage probability.
Problem 5. Assume a cellular network with two sites each having only one sector and omni-
directional antennas as shown in fig. below. site1 located at (Xmin + (Xmax -Xmin)/3 , Ymin + (Ymax -
Ymin)/3), and site2 located at (Xmin + 2*(Xmax -Xmin)/3 , Ymin + 2*(Ymax -Ymin)/3).(Assume 200kHz
and noise density of -174dBm/Hz )

(a). Assume a user located at the worst signal condition and use COST 231 path loss
model to
calculate the received signal.
(b). Compute the SINR, maximum throughput and study the conditions to satisfy your
requirements.
(c). Find the shadow fading margin (MSF) if the SF standard deviation of 7dB is
assumed.

Problem 6. Using provided WCDMA link-budget excel tool

(a) Compute interference and shadow fading margins for load factor 0.6/0.5 (DL/UL), SF standard
deviation 6 dB, and area coverage probability 93%?
(b) Compute corresponding range for a large city based on the given excel sheet for link budget of
WCDMA speech service? (Note: change only parameters given in (a) and related parameters)
(c) Is the system uplink or downlink limited?
(d) If we assume 20dB penetration loss, what will be the inter-site distance for 384kbps data services
assuming a 3 sector sites?
