A church’s mission statement defines
why a church exists by expressing its
purpose and values. It communicates
what the church deems as important, and
offers practical means to accomplish it.
Several months ago a Study Team was
established to prayerfully consider the
needs of campus and our ministries. The
Team believed the first task was to
prayerfully labor over our mission. Many
questions were asked such as: What is
Tyler Street’s mission? Why do we exist?
How will we accomplish it? Do we know
who we are? The result of hours of
prayerful conversation was a new mission

Even the introverts among us (like me)
need it. Our mission is to help people
connect with Christ and others.
“Demonstrate God’s love and truth”
I love the way John describes Jesus.
He writes, “We have seen his glory, the
glory of the one and only Son, who came
from the Father, full of grace and truth”
(John 1:14b). Grace means God’s
unmerited favor. It is the expression of
God’s unconditional love.
As Jesus demonstrated love and truth,
so must we. Yet it is not easy. Often one
becomes weightier. Jesus balanced the
two. Our task is to passionately
demonstrate love without compromising
truth, and to passionately demonstrate
truth without compromising love.
“Oak Cliff and beyond”
Our statement bears witness to local
mission field where God planted this
church nearly a century ago. God put us
here for a reason. We are committed to
Oak Cliff and its residents.
Yet our outreach is not geographically
limited. We will go wherever God opens
doors for us to serve.
“Gather…grow…give…go”
These four words are vital to spiritual
formation. Gathering for worship,
growing in God’s Word, giving
generously and going out in service are
practical steps to spiritual growth. They
are good for the soul.
They also help in ministry formation.
They cause us seek or create opportunities
for people to gather, grow, give and go.
And they help us fulfill our mission. If

Our final phrase reminds us that we are
completely dependent on the Holy Spirit.
We cannot fulfill our mission without
Him.
To say that I am excited about our new
mission statement is an understatement.
Let us be in prayer as we seek to faithfully
and effectively serve. I am grateful to
serve with you at Tyler Street.

Farewell to the
Wilks Family
By the time many of you receive this
newsletter, our Associate Pastor, John
Wilks, will no longer be at Tyler Street.
He has been appointed to lead Wesley
United Methodist Church in McKinney.
I have greatly enjoyed serving with
John for the past year and a half. We
worked well together and I will miss
him. I will also miss his family - Laurie,
Ben, Abi, Ian and Amelia. My family
and I have truly enjoyed our time with
them.
At the same time, I am excited for
them. I am confident that they will
enrich Wesley and Wesley will enrich
them.

Anniversary Sunday Centennial 2012
to be celebrated “Honoring the past...embracing the future”
January 30, 2011 Ninety nine and counting!
Starting this year,
Anniversary Sunday will be
the last Sunday in January. In
99th the past Tyler Street has
combined three distinct
services into one service. For
many years, the last Sunday in May has been
the occasion to celebrate Anniversary Sunday
(the 100 people with the longest continual
membership), remember church members who
have died the previous year, as well as
remember Memorial Day.
In order to observe each more faithfully,
each will have its own Sunday:
Anniversary Sunday - January 30. This
helps us remember that Tyler Street was organized
on the last Sunday in January of 1912.
Memorial Sunday - May 29. We will
honor those who have given their lives for
freedom.
All Saint’s Sunday – November 6. We will
honor our members who have gone to be with
the Lord the previous year.

alternative giving project for Advent, The Hope For
Christmas Animal Project through Zoe Ministry,
raised $1,805. Your purchase of farm animals will
allow those orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic
to experience Christ’s love and is a significant first
step to breaking free of poverty. Thanks be to God!

Children’s Choir
We are starting a Children’s Choir on a new time! Sunday evenings 6:00 - 6:30 p.m. starting
January 16th, right before J.A.M. and The Connection Worship. We will be teaching your children
about worship through music, the importance of rehearsal for God’s glory and the love of God
boosting self esteem, identity as a child of God and gift of music. However, we need the parents
commitment to bring your wonderfully made child(ren) to these rehearsals. Please contact Mary Anne

Sanctuary Choir
Adult choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. We have a short devotion followed
by lots of singing, learning how to sing well, learn new and
old music, preparing for 10:50 worship service on Sundays
as well as special events such as Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday. Our wonderful sanctuary choir sounds like profes-
sional choir but that is due to years of practice and love of
God. If you want to join us, don’t let the ‘sound’ of the choir

Festivals are YouthCUE’s flagship choral
events. We hold several Festivals each year
in locations through the United States and
Canada.
This year Youth Cue will be at Baylor
University in Waco TX, February 25th -
27th.
Each Festival includes roughly 200-400
singers from individual choirs, both large
and small, spanning the United States and
across denominational lines. Participating
