LOCATION PLANNING

Location plays a vital role for every business especially in a Textile business,
hence location planning, its strategies, reasons and decision processes are a key
part of the manufacturing process at Gul Ahmed. It focuses on strategic location
planning for building a new manufacturing facility in order to increase their
overall capacity through selecting new locations or expanding existing location.

The objective of location planning strategy is to maximize the benefit of

location to the firm and to generate more profit and to help an organization
grow in the long-run. Gul Ahmed being a Textile-manufacturing firm, it is
therefore closely located to Suppliers or Materials because transporting
materials tends to be more expensive than transporting finished goods.

Gul Ahmed is located in Korangi Industrial Area with an installed capacity

of 130,000 spindles, 300 state-of-the-art weaving machines and it has its own
captive power plant consisting of gas engines, gas and steam turbines and
backup diesel engines, which is the reason of its locality in an Industrial Area.
Location decisions are strategic in nature includes long term commitments and
benefits, impact on investment and generating revenues, expanding existing
facilities along with adding new facilities and equipment.

The types of Yarns are:

 Carded Yarn – A cotton yarn which is formed by carding operation

without combing. This yarn is made from short staple spinning with
herded hand fillings and less water absorbency.

 Combed Yarn – Combing is done to add some extra features to the fibres.
Its done after carding, hence its more compact and strong and the price of
combed barn is relatively high as compare to carded yarn. Combed yarn
is used for making different types of fabrics after being produced.

 Compact-Siro Yarn – It is the most widely used technology that includes

increasing the strength of yarn while the twisting coefficient would
remain same as the ring-spun yarn when two-fold yarns have been used
for weaving and twisted together as a double yarn.

 Fancy Yarn – Special products of spinning, twisting, wrapping, knitting

etc. The demand of fancy yarn tends to be high because of aesthetic and
high decorative appeal to the woven, knitted materials etc. Components
of fancy yarn can be natural or man-made fibres and the unusual
structures of fancy yarns appear to be desirable in the designing of new
textiles.

 Plied Yarn – Plying is a process which is used to produce a compact and

balanced yarn, which is done by taking two or more strands of yarn, one
of each of them has a twist and they are twisted in an opposite direction
to the one in which they have been spun. If they’ve been twisted rightly
then a balanced amount of yarn is created.

 Core Spun Yarn – The yarn which is produced by twisting staple fibres
around a central filament core, which is usually made of polyester of
extra length. Core spun yarn is used to enhance the quality, strength,
durability and stretch comfort of the fabric.

 Slub Yarn – A Slub Yarn is the yarn spun in order to achieve an irregular
and different shape in both length and diameter, which is used to give
fabric a personality

 Package Dyed Yarn – Package dying is a mature technology of yarn

dying which consists of eight different processes by which yarn can be in
small lot sizes and can be shaped in custom colors and shade matching is
possible when the yarn is package dyed. It is used for knitting, towel
weaving and fabric weaving.

 Gassed Mercerized Yarn – Gassed Yarn is a mercerized cotton yarn

which is exposed to a hot gas flame very quickly, that removes any
fuselage or excess thread lint which results in a smoother and brighter
appearance. It is done after weaving, knitting or spinning.
