Lesson: Art and Movement with the Moon

Earth & Space Science – The Moon

K-1ESA1- The Moon can be seen sometimes during the day and sometimes during the night.
The Moon appears to have different shapes on different days.
Physical Education

PE1.5.K- Demonstrate rhythmic skills in response to teacher-led creative activities.

PE2.1.K-Demonstrate safe movement in personal and general space at a slow to moderate
speed.
Learning Targets (For PE and Science)

Physical Education Target Earth & Space Science

 Understand how to move their body to  Understanding of the moon, and how
the correct moon phase the shape changes
 Can move with their moon phase  Understand how there is different
group topography on the moon
 Can be safe in the classroom during  Understand that the moon shape
the moon phases changes in a cycle, and develops
Instructional Sequence (Include For Both Arts/Other Subject Area):

DEMONSTRATION:
Do: First, I am going to read a book about the moon to the children. any book which shows
pictures of the moon at different stages will be fitting. The storyline is a bit arbitrary, just as
long as the story fits the normal cycle as the moon. I think that this will be a good way to
open the material up in an artistic way. I would point out the art of the moon, and begin to
prompt the earth science observations by commenting/asking students about the appearance
of the moon
 After, I will have children do a free draw of what the moon looks like to them. I would expect
that some students may draw a bright full moon, and some may draw a crescent moon. This
will have the students begin to create art that is connected to the natural environment.
 After the students have finished drawing shapes of the moon, I will have them show their art
to their neighbor and partake in a turn and talk. Hopefully students will have drawn the moon
at different stages.
 After coming to the conclusion with the class that the moon can be many different shapes, I
will refer back in the book and have the children copy down the basic shapes of each phase of
the moon. I will check for understanding and make sure that the students understand that the
moon is different phases.
 I will assign moon phase groups. They will each be given a specific day of the year that the
moon phase starts. I will give them a large sheet of paper, and have them draw their moon
phase on. There are many materials such as paint, markers, glitter and other mediums that can
be used to create the moon phase. Before drawing, I will assure that each student in the group
is sure of the moon phase which they are drawing.
 MOVEMENT:
 I will ask students to make a shape of the moon that is there assign moon group. I could
model bending my body like a C for the Crescents, or making a big circle for a full moon.
 Give students time to figure out how to act like the moon. Explain that there will be an
activity where the whole class gets to see your moon!

SUPERVISED PRACTICE: The moon cycle movement

 Check with students to make sure that each group has figured out how to be their moon
phase.
 Line students up in the order of moon phases. There are new, full, quarter, crescent, and
gibbus stages. Explain that the class will go through the moon cycle in SUPER SPEED!
 Turn on a classroom lamp and open the windows so that there is a bit of light, but explain
that the classroom light is the SUN. When the sun is on the other side of the Earth in the night
time, the moon shows! Explain that when the light turns off, that is when the moon shows.
 Say that when your moon phase is called, they go to the middle and show the moon cycle that
they are
 Explain that there will be 1 MINUTE FOR EACH DAY! Put on a timer
 Say that the first phase in the moon is a NEW MOON, they will go first. Make sure that all of
the groups are ready
 Go through each of the moon phases. 30 seconds for the day time, 30 seconds for the night
time
 After the first round, give AABs to students for following directions.
 Go through the moon cycle movement a few times, to explain that it happens multiple times a
year.

Formative Assessments

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Other Subject Area:

 If students are following directions, data  I would mix up groups again, and have
can be taken on each student if they are them be in a Rocketship group. (A small
completing the movements currently, or number of groups, maybe 4) I would
to the best of their abilities. instruct a certain group to go to a specific
 Students should be able to move safely moon phase, and to see if they could
when their moon phase is called create the moon phase with their body.
 I would read the story one more time,
emphasizing the different moons. Student
replies may be a form of assessment.
 After, having students draw all of the
moons that they remember can be a great
way to assess if the knowledge of the
different moon phases were put into
declarative knowledge.
