name are often heard. Here are a few
names attributed to Pearl: Greta, Gretchen,

The smooth, hard, iridescent substance that

shells. It is also known as mother of pearl.

of pearls
When we think of natural
pearls, most of us conjure
thoughts of gems coming
from oysters — a bivalve
mollusk. But did you know
that pearls can be found
in a variety of mollusks?
Abalone
An abalone is a large, univalve
mollusk. It is essentially a sea
snail — or gastropod mollusk
in the Haliotidae family. Abalone
pearls are found naturally in
a wide variety of colors: shades
of blue, pink, purple, green,
silver, or, occasionally, cream.
Conch
A conch is a large marine snail,
a gastropod mollusk. Beautiful
colored pearls have been found
in the queen conch (Strombus
gigas) even though this mollusk
does not produce nacre. These
“non-nacreous pearls” are often
pink, but may be orange, yellow,
white, purple, or brown.
Giant clam
Although rare, giant clams can
produce giant pearls (around the
size of softballs!). These clams
are the largest of all mollusks
and in the family Tridacnidae.
Their pearls are generally white
or cream, but may be light pink
or tinted yellow.

TYPES OF IMITATION PEARLS

DESCRIPTION PROCESS
Hollow glass A glass bead is dipped or sprayed mul-

Shell beads Shell pearls are made from the inner
lining of oyster shells, also known as
mother of pearl. The shell substance
is pulverized, and shaped into a bead.
The beads are then dyed and coated
with pearlescent material, and glazed
with a protective lining, which also
adds luster.
NOTE
These pearls are most likely to be found
in antique jewelry.

many myths. Below are a few
of these stories:
Ceylon
(Ancient Sri Lanka)
Legend has it that Adam and Eve
shed bittersweet tears, creating
a lake of pearls in the garden of
Eden. The tears from Eve formed
white pearls. Black pearls came
from Adam’s tears, which were
rare compared to Eve’s.
Chinese
A Chinese myth associated black
pearls with wisdom and rarity. The
pearls were believed to be formed
in the heads of mighty dragons.
To obtain the black gem, a cunning
person had to slay a dragon.
Persian
To explain the presence of black
pearls, a Persian tale told of an
encounter between a rainbow and
the Earth after a fantastic storm.
The shimmering effects of the black
pearl’s color came as the result
of the thunder and the lightning.
Polynesian
Polynesian lore depicts the Tahitian
pearl as a symbol of eternal love.
The Creator gave light to Tane, god
of harmony and beauty, who used
the light to make stars, and then
gave these to Rua Hatu, god of the
ocean, to illuminate the deep waters.
Working with Tane, Oro, god of war
and peace, gave these remarkable
orbs to human women living near
the lagoons of French Polynesia,
as tokens of love. The pearls have
thrived in these lagoons, serving
as symbols of love.

stitch nine times to complete the round, and
retrace the thread path. Continue through the
next 110 adjacent to the petal, the petal (back
to front), and the 110 on the front of the petal.
Round 9: Working on the front of the pendant,
pick up a B, a 6 mm pearl, and a B, and sew
through the 110 on the front of the next petal
(photo m). Pull snug. This will position the
6 mm on top of a first-round petal just outside
the round of 4 mm bicones. Repeat this stitch
nine times to complete the round, and continue to form a loop (photo p). Retrace the thread
through the first B, 6 mm, and B added in path twice, and end the working thread. B&B
this round.
Round 10: Pick up an 110, and sew through the Andrea Palásti

Make three beaded beads in two different sizes, and separate
them with pearl spacer rings for a colorful look.
SMALL BEADED BEAD
Bead half
1) On 1 yd. (.9 m) of thread, pick up a repeating
pattern of a MiniDuo bead and a 150 seed bead
seven times. Leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail, retrace
the thread path to form a ring (not shown in the
figure for clarity), and tie a square knot with the
working thread and tail. Continue through the
next MiniDuo (figure 1, a–b), and the open
hole of the same MiniDuo (b–c).
2) Pick up a MiniDuo, and sew through the
open hole of the next MiniDuo (c–d). Repeat
this stitch to complete the round (d–e), and
retrace the thread path (not shown in the figure
for clarity) using tight tension so the beadwork
begins to cup. Continue through the first
MiniDuo added in this round and the open
hole of the same MiniDuo (e–f).
3) Pick up a 4 mm bicone, and sew through the
open hole of the next MiniDuo (f–g). Repeat this
stitch to complete the round, retrace the thread
path (not shown in the figure for clarity), and
continue through the first 4 mm added (g–h).
4) Pick up three 110 seed beads, and sew through
the next 4 mm to form a picot (figure 2, a–b).
Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and
continue through the first two 110s added (b–c).
5) Pick up an 110, MiniDuo, and 110, and sew
through the center 110 in the next picot (c–d).
Repeat this stitch to complete the round (d–e),
retrace the thread path twice using tight tension
(not shown in the figure for clarity), and continue
through the first 110 and MiniDuo added
in this round and the open hole of the same
MiniDuo (e–f).

7) Repeat steps 1–6 to make the other half of
the beaded bead, but use 40 in. (1.01 m) of thread
and do not end the working thread.
Joining
1) Line up the open end of the two halves of the
beaded bead so a MiniDuo on one half is adja-
cent to a 3 mm on the other half. With the work-
ing thread exiting a MiniDuo, pick up a 4 mm,
and sew through the MiniDuo on the other half
of the beaded bead (figure 3, a–b) (side view
of the beaded bead shown in the figure). Repeat
this stitch to complete the round, joining the
halves together (b–c).
2) With the working thread exiting a MiniDuo,
sew through the next 150 (figure 4, point a)
(side view of the beaded bead shown in the figure).
Pick up five 150s, skip the next 3 mm, and con-
tinue through the following 150 (a–b). Continue
through the adjacent 4 mm that is angled back
toward the MiniDuo on the opposite edge, and
sew through the 150 between that MiniDuo
and the next fire-polished bead as shown (b–c),
Repeat these stitches (c–d) to complete the round
using tight tension (d–e). End the thread.
3) Make another beaded bead.

LARGE BEADED BEAD
1) Repeat all the steps for the “Small beaded
bead, bead half” with the following changes:
• In step 1, start with 40 in. (1.01 m) of thread.
• Pick up a repeating pattern of a MiniDuo
and a 150 seed bead eight times instead of seven.
2) Repeat steps 1–2 of “Small beaded bead,
joining” to join the large beaded bead.

SPACER RING
1) On 18 in. (46 cm) of thread, pick up a repeat-
ing pattern of a 4 mm pearl and an 110 five
times. Leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail, retrace the
thread path to form a ring (not shown in the
figure for clarity). Tie a square knot with the tail
and working thread, and continue through the
next pearl (figure 5, a–b).
2) Pick up three 150s, skip the next 110, and
sew through the following pearl to form a picot
(b–c). Repeat this stitch four times to complete
the round (c–d). Repeat this step to add another
round of picots.
3) Pick up an 110, and sew through the next ring, and a small beaded bead. If using chain,
pearl using tight tension, positioning the 110 attach a jump ring to an end link of the chain
between the two sets of picots and on top of and the lobster claw clasp. On the other end of
the 110 in the ring (figure 6, a–b). Repeat this the chain, attach a jump ring to the end link. B&B
stitch four times to complete the round (b–c).
End the threads.

Stack geometric cubic right-angle weave (CRAW) components
for a unique pair of earrings with a modern flair.
SQUARE COMPONENT
1) On 2 yd. (1.8 m) of thread and
leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail, use
color A 110 seed beads to work
a strip of cubic right-angle weave
(CRAW) that is five units long
(figure 1). Be sure to sew through
the four As at the end of the strip
to cinch up the open end.
2) Working off the end unit, work
four more units perpendicular to
the first strip (figure 2) to create
a second side that is five units long.

As in step 1, be sure to sew through
the four As at the end.
3) Repeat step 2 to make a third
side, making sure it is parallel
to the first side (figure 3).

of the second unit on this side, with
your needle pointing toward the
third unit (c–d).
6) Working as in step 5, add two Bs
on the inner edge (figure 6, a–b).
Pick up a 150 seed bead, and sew
through the next inner-edge A
(b–c). The 150 should nestle into
the corner. Repeat these stitches
three times, and continue through
the next two beads to exit the
center inner A on this side (c–d).
7) Pick up a 6 mm fire-polished
bead, and sew through the corre-
sponding A on the opposite side
(figure 7, a–b). Continue back
through the 6 mm, the A your
thread exited at the start of this
step, and the next B (b–c).
8) Pick up a 150, and sew through
the center three beads on the next
side as shown (c–d). Repeat this
stitch three times (d–e), and con-
tinue through the next three As
in the same unit to exit the outside
edge, and the following B, and A
as shown to exit the center A (e–f).
9) Sew through the next two As
to exit the back surface. Flip the
beadwork over, and add a B in each
space along the outer edge, and
continue through the first B added
(figure 8, a–b).
10) Pick up eight 150s, and sew
through the center B, A, and B your
thread is exiting (b–c). Retrace the
thread path of the loop, and end
the threads.
11) Repeat steps 1–10 to make
a second square component.

RECTANGULAR
COMPONENT
1) On 2½ yd. (2.3 m) of thread,
work as in steps 1–4 of “Square
component,” but make the second
and fourth sides a total of nine
units long, including the shared
corner units (figure 9).
2) Work as before to add Bs in the
spaces along the outer edge, and
then add Bs in the spaces of the
inner edge and 150s in the inner
corners. Exit the first B along the
top inner edge, with the needle
pointing toward the opposite
edge (figure 10).
3) Pick up a B, and sew through
the next B (figure 11, a–b). Pick
up a 150, and continue through
the following B (b–c) and the
next four beads (c–d). Pick up
a B, and sew through the following
five 110s (d–e). Pick up a 150,
and sew through the next B (e–f).
Repeat these stitches once more,
and exit the first B added in this
round (f–g).
4) Pick up a 6 mm and a 150, and
sew through the center B added in
the previous round on the adjacent
long side (figure 12, a–b). Pick
up a 150 and a 6 mm, and continue
through the center B on the bottom
edge (b–c). Sew back through the
second 6 mm, pick up a 150, and
sew through the center B on the
other long side (c–d). Pick up a 150,
and continue through the first
6 mm and the B your thread
exited at the start of this step (d–e).
5) Sew through the beadwork
to the back surface along the outer
edge, and add Bs in the spaces
along the outer edge as before.
End the threads.
6) Repeat steps 1–5 to make
another rectangular component.
ASSEMBLY
1) Attach 2 ft. (61 cm) of thread
to the front of a square component,
exiting the second B on the bottom
edge as shown (figure 13, point a).
Pick up a 3 mm fire-polished bead,
and sew through the corresponding
B on the front top-edge of a rectan-
gular component (a–b). Continue
back through the 3 mm, and the B
your thread exited at the start of
this step (b–c). Sew through the
next six 110s along the bottom
edge (c–d).
2) Work as in step 1 to add another
3 mm (d–e), then sew through
the beadwork to the back surface.
3) Add two more 3 mms on the
back surface as before, attaching
them to the corresponding Bs.
End the threads.
4) Attach an earwire to the seed
bead loop at the top of the earring.
5) Repeat steps 1–4 to complete

to use your seed beads and pearls to create
a contemporary patterned bracelet perfect
for your summer wardrobe.
BASE
1) On a comfortable length of
thread, attach a stop bead, leaving
a 12-in. (30 cm) tail. Pick up 14 color
C 110 seed beads, one color A 80
Demi bead, and two Cs. Skip the last
four beads just picked up, and sew
back through the next two beads
(figure 1, a–b).
2) Make a one-bead stitch: Pick up
a C, and sew through the next two
Cs in the previous row (b–c). Repeat

embellishment to the remaining

CLASP
1) Attach a jump ring to each A
on one end of the base.
2) Attach a jump ring to one loop
on a 5-strand box clasp and to the
corresponding jump ring on the
base. Repeat to attach the remain-
ing four clasp loops.
3) Repeat steps 1–2 for the other

How to pick up the crescent beads:
With the tips pointing toward
you on your work surface, pick
up the bead through the right hole
(RH) or the left hole (LH), per the
instructions.

(curved) side of the bead so the
concave (indented) side if facing
up when attached to the beadwork.
PENDANT BASE
1) On 2 yd. (1.8 m) of thread, pick
up a repeating pattern of a 4 mm
pearl and a SuperDuo bead eight
times. Leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail,
sew through all the beads again
(not shown in the figure for clarity).
Tie the working thread and tail
together with a square knot, and
continue through the first pearl
and SuperDuo, sewing through
the same hole (figure 1, a–b).
2) Work in rounds as follows:
Round 2: Pick up two 150 seed
beads, a tile bead, and two 150s,
and sew through the same hole
of the next SuperDuo (b–c). Repeat
this stitch seven times to complete
