CRESTED BUTTE TO OURAY, COLORADO

P
arts Unlimited’s longest continuing dealer ride is the
Rocky Mountain 400, which reached a milestone this
year with its 15th annual running. During those 15
years, hundreds, perhaps now thousands have
participated and everyone who has been on the ride
once can’t wait to return. There are a few “die-hards” who
have participated from the beginning and will likely do so
forever. Some of have been fortunate enough to watch this
ride grow from a handful of individuals getting together to
ride and discuss the motorcycle industry to the hundreds of
industry execs and dealers who feel privileged to be invited
and earn a spot on the legendary Rocky Mountain 400 ride.
With the support of Thor, Moose and Alpinestars, as well
as other key suppliers, qualifying dealers were treated to
several days of riding and camaraderie in the beautiful Rocky
Mountains of Colorado. Day one; get checked in, bike tech
inspection, talk to vendors about products and pick up some
free or discounted swag. Day 2-4; hit the trail for three great
days of riding in the Rockies, through woods, mountains and
over passes as high as 13,000 feet. Once back at the home It may not look like he’s flying high, but dealer Brian

held to recognize many that made the event the success that
it is. Ask almost any guest and you’ll be told this may be the
best trail ride in the world. Check out just a few of the many
highlights from the 15th annual Rocky Mountain 400… It may look like a victory shot at the top of Everest and
it was almost as hard to get there with the snow closing
in, but the sign at the top of the 12,800-foot Engineer
Pass is a must-do photo opportunity.

Engineer Pass is well above the tree-line and the view in

all directions is spectacular.

dual-sport machines. The leveling factor is that it is not a race
and is all fun.

Unlimited’s Paul Griffin. The ride itself is all about having fun and
absorbing the scenery. Often you’ll see something amazing in the
distance and your guide will take you there. After crossing over
Engineer Pass, riders choose several trails towards Ouray.

Historic Ouray was the hub of this year’s ride.

Jason and Keith Alosi of Reno Motorsports proudly pose by the Engineer Pass
sign. The snow got so heavy by the final day that Engineer Pass was closed and
the crew had to find alternative routes out of Ouray.

Celebrity riders this year included former

factory rider and Supercross great Larry
Ward (left) as well as the legendary
Rodney Smith. Rodney, with 14 AMA
National Off-Road Championships, includ-
ing five GNCC titles, and multiple ISDE
Gold Medals, showed up with a Suzuki
RM-Z450 which he converted himself for
dual-sport use. Larry Ward rode a
tricked-out Honda CRX450 built for the
ride by Yoshimura.

In honor of his retirement Bob Maynard was presented an AARP

much-deserved award for his photography
of races, racers, products and events on
behalf of Parts Unlimited. Little known
fact…Jones crashed on his street bike just
days before attending the Rocky Mountain
400, and despite suffering four broken
ribs, he rode over all the passes, and
carried a backpack with 40 pounds of
photo equipment.

motor guys came up with this package since the bike was built for
Colorado. In the high altitude you need all the power you can get. It
was a great showing to have Larry Ward ride the bike at the RM400.
This was our (Yoshimura) first year attending this event. Yoshimura is
well known for their Road Race/street products, but we’re not just a
street company. We develop and market a lot of products for dirt
bikes and ATVs as well as street bikes. In addition to exhaust systems,
we offer three different engine packages for the Honda CRF450R and
X as well as other off-road/MX Dirt bikes.”
The engine packages Ryan spoke of are offered by Yoshimura R&D
and come in the following specs:

Stage 1 Engine Kit: Port and Polish Head–increases intake and

exhaust flow, increasing overall horsepower; Serdi head work and porting; Yoshimura assembly; Transmission
Machine–Valve seat re-facing and valve job. Blueprinting included–Transmission gears are de-burred using

stage filter ($30.95). To give the big beast some off road legs an IMS Racing 3.2
gallon tank ($274.95) was installed as well as some Pro Series Foot Pegs
($96.00) for comfort. Clutch duties went to Hinson Racing for a Clutch Basket
($239.99) and Clutch Cover ($159.99).
Larry has always been particular about his bars, so Renthal 971 Fat Bars
($89.95) were employed for “Big Bird.” Regina USA kicked in with a Regina
520 Z-Ring Chain ($124.95) and the tires came from Dunlop, a 90/100-21
D745, and 110/100-18 D756.
The result of all of this was a cool-looking and even better performing off-
road machine, custom designed for the Rocky Mountains. Check it out…
