The solar system
- The Moon and the Stars

Reference: Cyber Science rev. 2 p.389-403

III. Lessons

Vocabulary words
Satellite – an object that moves around the Earth
Craters – Holes
Revolves- move around

- The Moon

- The Moon does not have its own light. It only gets its light from the Sun.
The Moon like the mirror. It reflects the light of the sun to Earth. The moon
is always round. It does not change it shape. This is because of the
movement of Earth. As Earths moves, the moon also moves. The changes
in the position of the Moon and Earth result in the different shapes of the
Moon.

- It is an example of a natural satellite. It is made up of rocks. It does not

have its own light. Moon has dark patches called the craters. There is no
soil and air in the Moon.

Phases of the Moon

1. Full Moon
- This appears when all its lighted parts are seen on Earth.
- During this night, you will see the moon at its biggest and brightest.
- It looks like a big letter O in the sky.

2. Half moon/Quarter moon

- This appears when only half of its lighted part is facing Earth. During this
night, the moon looks like big letter D in the sky

3. Crescent Moon
- This appears when only one fourth of its lighted side is facing Earth.
During this night, the moon looks like big letter C in the sky.
4. New Moon
- This is the phase of the moon that you do not see. While the moon
revolves, its dark side faces the Earth. During new moon, the night is dark.
Only the stars are seen on Earth.
- Fourth planet from the sun

- All these changes in the shapes of the moon happen as it moves around
the Earth. As the moon moves around the Earth, we see only its lighted
part.

THE STAR
- The biggest star is the Sun because it is the nearest star to Earth
- Stars looks tiny because they are very far from the Earth.
- Groups of stars appearing in the sky are called the constellations. One
example of this constellation is the big dipper.

- Stars are made up of very hot gases. They are of different colors. Their
colors tell their temperature. Some of them are red and orange. They are
cold stars. But it does not mean they not hot. They are said to be cold only
because their temperature is lower when compared with other stars. Some
are yellow like sun. Some are bluish-white which are the hottest stars.
Stars do not twinkle. They just seem to twinkle because their light seems
to move as they pass through the air in out atmosphere.
