ike Wolfe caught his
first glimpse of Columbia,
Tennessee (population
38,000), from the seat of his motorcycle
five years ago. The professional
junker and television personality had
just finished his restoration efforts
in LeClaire, Iowa, and he was looking
for a reprieve. But, sometimes,
love happens when you least expect
it. After observing the community’s
efforts to bring the downtown back
to life, he says, “I knew I needed the
town as much as it needed me.”
So he quickly put his money where
his mouth was, investing in and
renovating a circa-1857 former Civil
War recruitment office. Now it’s home
to a first-floor bike shop (Trek) and
an upstairs Airbnb—Two Lanes
Guesthouse (twolanesguesthouse.com).
Here, Mike gives us the tour.

the C10’s interior, but we
didn’t touch the exterior,”
says homeowner Hadley
Wiggins-Marin. “People
say to us, ‘Oh, it’s going
to look so great when you
paint it,’ and we’re like,
‘No, the whole point is to
keep it in a rusty state.’ ”

H adley Wiggins-Marin knows
some things are worth the
wait. Case in point: She
watched (ahem, stalked)
her Long Island farmhouse for more
than 10 years before she and husband
Daniele Marin purchased it. “I would
drive down this country lane just
to spy on this little farmhouse that
appeared to be unoccupied,” says
Hadley. The interior designer (hadley
wiggins.com) and owner of North Fork
antiques shop North Found & Co.
(631-765-8701) tried everything.
“I asked real estate agents about the
house, pulled the property card at
Town Hall, and tried to contact the
owners. I got nowhere,” she says.
Then one day, out of the blue, her
longtime real estate agent called to
let her know about a charming little
house hitting the market. “It was
my house,” says Hadley. “I didn’t even
let her finish her sentence before
cutting in with ‘I want it!’ ”
Surrounded by lush vineyards,
the circa-1800s home came with a
postcard-worthy setting. The interiors,
however, were far from idyllic. Hadley
set out on a 10-month restoration
project to make the inside look like
the outside. That meant refurbishing
the old bones and reintroducing a
19th-century feel to areas that had
fallen victim to well-meaning but
unfortunate 20th-century updates.
“My goal was for it to feel original as

point of the renovation was to hide
any signs of renovation.” In portions
of the home that still retained original
millwork and hardware, she worked
with local craftsmen to meticulously
restore it. She also scoured nearby
barn sales to find close matches to the
house’s existing elements.
When it came time to furnish the
house, Hadley again took her cues
from the architecture. As an antiques
dealer and shop owner, she regularly
rolls items of a certain vintage from
her home to the store to clients’ homes
and then back again. The one constant
in her own home? Almost everything
that comes in needs to have a purpose
and be able to be touched by a curious
3 year old. This home is no museum.
“I’m most drawn to beauty formed by Hadley’s two-acre property is surrounded

in it. They’re always very
funny.”

says Hadley. “I thought this
was a pretty successful
way to incorporate the TV.”

and removed the upper cabinets.
What she lost in storage, she
compounded in charm, thanks
to open shelving and antique
boxes that keep silverware at the
ready. She added brass hardware

cabinets and topped them with
oiled butcher block. The plate
rack only looks antique. “I found
one that I loved and asked
my husband to copy it. I sold the
original at the store,” she says.

but it’s such a special piece,” says Matt.

W
hen photographer Matt Albiani and real estate agent
Ron Brand opened their Montecito, California, vintage
shop Mate Gallery (mategallery.com) seven years
ago, they turned a 160-square-foot slice of Southern
California into a paean to New England nostalgia.
The tiny store teems with timeworn nods to the nautical, from oil
paintings of sea scenes and brass whale paperweights to anchor
andirons and lighthouse salt-and-pepper shakers. “Our style is very
much rustic New England maritime,” says Matt, a native of Boston.
Last year, the partners took their brine-soaked aesthetic to
a whole new level when they purchased a 1940s seaside cottage in
Montauk, New York, and christened it “Sea Roost.” “Ron and I have
been renting a neighboring property for the last seven years and
heard through the grapevine that the owner was interested in selling
the house,” says Matt. “He liked the idea of giving it to us because
he knew we weren’t going to tear it down, that we would preserve
it.” Perched on a knoll overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the half-acre
property includes a 300-square-foot artist’s studio and a 1,000-
square-foot main house that’s one of the last few original fisherman
cottages in the town’s Hither Hills area. “We loved the idea of
bringing Mate Gallery into the house,” says Matt. “Our store is very
small, and it’s chock-full of stuff, so it was nice to be able to
bring items into real life and give them some room to breathe.”

1. Cut goat cheese into 12 (1/4-inch-
thick) rounds; shape into tidy
disks. Freeze until firm, 10 to 15
minutes. Combine lemon juice
and chopped radishes in a bowl.
2. Heat canola oil in a large skillet
on medium-high heat. Place panko
in a shallow bowl. Place egg in a
second bowl. Dip chilled cheese in
egg, letting excess drip off, and
then in panko, pressing gently to
help it adhere. Fry, in batches,
turning once, until golden brown,
45 seconds to 1 minute. Transfer
to a paper towel-lined plate.
3. Add olive oil, honey, and mustard
to radish mixture; whisk to
combine. Toss together spinach,
mint, blueberries, sliced radishes,
and vinaigrette in a bowl. Serve
topped with crispy goat cheese.

1 pound mixed mushrooms
(such as cremini, beech, or
shiitake), roughly chopped
4 slices bacon, sliced
3 large eggs
1 clove garlic, chopped
3/4 cup whole milk
3 tablespoons unsalted butter,
melted, divided
1/2 cup all-purpose flour,
spooned and leveled
2 tablespoons cornstarch
Kosher salt
1 tablespoon fresh thyme
2 ounces fontina or Cheddar

1. Set oven racks in middle and

8-inch-square baking pan with
parchment paper, leaving a 1-inch
overhang on two sides.
2. Pulse together flour, butter, and
1/2 cup sugar in a food processor
until a sandy texture forms, 10 to
12 times. Transfer 1/3 cup to a bowl,
and fold in almonds and 1/2 cup
oats. Squeeze together to form
small clumps; chill.
3. Add baking soda, salt, and
remaining 1 cup oats to mixture
in food processor. Pulse until
incorporated, 12 to 15 times. Press
into bottom of prepared pan.
Bake until golden brown, 14 to
16 minutes.
4. Mash together 1 container
raspberries and remaining
tablespoon sugar in a bowl. Spread
over prebaked crust. Scatter
remaining container raspberries and
chilled crumb mixture on top.
5. Bake until golden brown, 40 to
45 minutes. Cool in pan 30 minutes,
then use overhang to transfer
to a wire rack to cool completely.

1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Melt
2 tablespoons butter in a saucepan
over medium heat until foamy. Add
flour and cook, stirring, until pale
and begins to foam, 1 to 2 minutes.
Gradually whisk in milk. Cook, stirring
often, until mixture is a pudding-like
thickness, 14 to 16 minutes. Remove
from heat and whisk in mustard and
nutmeg. Season with salt.
2. Place 4 slices bread on a rimmed
baking sheet. Top with half of the
béchamel, dividing evenly. Top with
ham and half of cheese. Top with
remaining bread, béchamel, and
cheese, dividing evenly. Bake until
cheese is golden brown and bread is
crisp on bottom, 12 to 15 minutes.
3. Melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter
in a nonstick skillet over medium
heat. Crack eggs into skillet, making
sure to keep them separate. Cook
until whites are set but yolks are still
runny, 3 to 5 minutes. Season with
salt and pepper. Top sandwiches
with eggs and sprinkle with parsley.
Bistro-Style French Fries
WORKING TIME 30 minutes
TOTAL TIME 2 hours, 30 minutes (includes
chilling)
MAKES 4 to 6 servings
Soaking potatoes in water yields a
crispier, golden fry. Turn the heat up
every time you add fries to the oil,
as the oil temperature will drop as soon
as something is added to the pot.
4 large russet potatoes
(about 2 pounds), peeled
and cut into 1/4-inch sticks
8 cups canola oil
