Facts & Data

● Many men emigrate leaving a majority of women who have trouble finding life partners.
Young people tend to migrate, leaving the old and the very young. So there is a bigger
labor burden placed upon the younger and older population.
● “the number of Mexicans annually leaving Mexico for the U.S. declined from more than
one million in 2006 to 404,000 in 2010—a 60% reduction.”
● Fertility rates in mexico have fallen from 7.3 in 1960 to 2.4 in 2009
● Return migration is being observed at significantly lower rates: during the fourth quarters
of 2006 and 2007 totaled 117,120 and 133,490, and the numbers dropped to 95,238 and
79,959 during the fourth quarters of 2008 and 2009.
● Immigrants are more likely to be of child-bearing age, and tend to have more children,
than native-born Americans. As a result, between 2006 and 2010, more than half (53%)
of Mexican American births were to parents who had migrated from Mexico.

Effects
● There is a 2000 km border between the USA and Mexico as illegal migration is a huge
problem. U.S. Border Patrol guards the border and tries to prevent illegal immigrants
from entering the country. Illegal migration costs the US millions of dollars for border
patrols and prisons.
● Legal and illegal immigrants together send billions a year back to Mexico as remittance.
● There is a younger group of people that can work in the US which has a larger older
population than it does younger native population.
● Chain migration and stream migration.
● Migration has been observed to drop heavily over the past decade due to establishment of
pre existing communities that are incurring natural growth
