Open Coding Due: Monday, July 27th
Focused Coding Due: Thursday, July 30th
General Guidelines:
For this assignment you will find three news articles (from a news blog or other online
sources is fine) related to your research topic, and go through the process of coding them in
order to analyze how they “frame” your topic, and what themes are used.
Open coding (3 points): Due Monday, July 27th
• Turn in your three articles, with open coding completed for each.
o You will want to code by hand, on printed copies of the articles.
o Don’t hand in the originals to me—you will need the originals for class.
• Write 1‐2 paragraphs on what your research topic is, and what themes you see
emerging in your open‐coding.
Focused coding (7 points): Due Thursday, July 30th
• Turn in your three articles, with focused coding completed for each.
• Write 2‐3 pages on:
o What was your sampling frame?
o How you moved from open coding to focused coding for the articles. What
categories and themes did you decided to code for? Why is each of these
important?
o How are the three articles different? How does it matter what the sources
are?
o What did you learn about your research topic from this analysis?
Grading criteria:
• I will grade these two assignments together, and they’ll receive a single grade
(out of 10 points).
• 3 points: Open coding. How detailed and complete is the coding?
• 2 points: Focused coding. How were the themes chosen for focused coding? Are
the relevant to the research question?
• 2 points: Focused coding. How detailed and complete is the coding?
• 3 points: Write up and analysis.
