About Sight Words
What are Sight Words? Many of the most frequently used words in
English are difficult to sound out and instead, need to be recognized on
“sight”.

Sight words can be known by other names as well including:

High-frequency words
Dolch words (named after Edward William Dolch, PhD who first
compiled the list in 1936)
Fry words (named after Dr. Edward B. Fry's who created an updated
version of the list in 1996 – he discovered that there are 25 words that
make up about 1/3 of all written publications!)
Instant words (because they are “instantly” known and are not
“sounded out”)
Star words (this term is used by some grade schools).
Wall words (schools put the words the kids have learned up on the
wall!)
Practice Tips & Tricks
To ensure your child is learning the sight words, try these simple tips:

Practice regularly. The goal is to be able to recognize each word as

quickly as possible.
Point out the sight words in other materials as well. The more the
child sees the words in different settings, the better.
Provide encouragement... Reading can be difficult at first, but with
your praise and support, your child will enjoy learning to read!
Don't depend too much on "context clues". Although context clues can
be important with new words, many times, children memorize stories
or "read" the picture instead of the words. Check your childs mastery
regularly with flash cards or other material that does not contain any
context clues.
Learn 50 Sight Words & Read the Sentences
Use this section to learn each sight word one at a time!

This section shows each word as a separate flash card. Then, it uses the
word in a sentence. As more words are introduced, the sentences will get
longer, but each sentence will only use the words that have already been
introduced.

Words in this lesson: a, and, away, baby, ball, big, bird, birds, blue, boy,
