Eighteen days until the
annual Opheim Rodeo, but
who’s counting?
Actually, a number of
people are, including cowgirls,
cowboys, organizers, fans, area
residents and the like who have
been competitors and spectators
for years. Those from Montana
and out of state, like Brant
Grisdale of Granite Station,
California who competed in the
saddle bronc event in 2019, plus
those from Canada who drop
down to compete and be a fan
are ready to rodeo.
This year’s Opheim
Rodeo, despite the abnormal
nationwide circumstances, is all
systems go for Sunday, June 28,
with the parade along Opheim’s
Main Street starting at 12 noon
and rodeo kicking off at 1:00.

So that’s the present and a short trip back into the
past of one year ago, but what is the history of the sport
of rodeo in the Opheim area? What year did rodeo start?
What were some of the names?
To find out the Daniels County Leader newspaper
took a deep dive into the subject, and a fascinating one at
that, the weekend of May 16-17, 2020. The “Homesteading
Our Heritage” book covering North Valley County was
grabbed off the Leader’s book shelf the afternoon of Friday,
May 15, and taken home for a search for all things Opheim
rodeo, including all things rodeo in the surrounding area
of Opheim. All 844 pages of the 8.5-by-11 inch book
were searched for anything Opheim rodeo. Here’s what
transpired from the extensive, but very enjoyable, search:
First it needs to be noted Opheim was established
in 1911 three-quarters of a mile southeast of the present
Opheim townsite. From 1911 to 1926 wagon freighting
from Scobey and Glasgow was the only means of
transportation into Opheim concerning the farm sector.
In 1917 began the drive to get Great Northern Railway
to extend its Bainville-to-Scobey branchline westward
to Opheim. The railroad was finally convinced it would
be profitable for both the agricultural producers and
the railroad, eliminating the long 45-to-60 mile hauls of
grains by horse-pulled wagons from the Opheim area to
elevators in Scobey, Glasgow and Nashua. On July 27,
1925 the Great Northern Railway began laying track out
of Scobey westward to Opheim, driving the last spike in
Opheim on August 26, 1926. The new Opheim townsite
was incorporated in 1928. So anything dated 1911 to 1926
was at the old Opheim townsite and thereafter at the new
and present-day townsite.
The first rodeo in Opheim was in 1914, it stated
on page 256. “Archie and Dan Henderson furnished
the horses (no canals or chutes). Mr. Tom Coleman was
deputy sheriff on patrol that day.”
On page 193 shows a photo of “Knute Volden in his
hamburger stand at the three-day rodeo in Opheim on
July 4, 1914” with eight customers, his helper and three
other people in the photo.
William John (Bill) Linthicum settled near Richland
in 1914 and filed a homestead, it said on page 114. “I loved
horses and could pick out the best of the bunch,” he wrote.
“I broke and trained many to ride and to pull a plow. I
enjoyed riding at our small rodeos or country picnics. I
remember the first picnic I attended at Happy Valley. I
took first prize money riding broncs.”
On page 50 it said “A rodeo was held on our place
at Morgan Creek every summer on June 24, which was
the wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Mollberg,”
wrote Olena (Mollberg) Hennessy. The Mollbergs arrived
in Opheim from Assiniboia, Saskatchewan in 1914.
The Baylor community, located about 15 miles south
of Opheim, was established in 1914 and its first store was
up and running in 1915.
“Rodeos, brandings, country-style dances in barns
or schoolhouses, picnics, baseball, pie and box socials
and home parties were the source of many good times,”
wrote Betty Gay Sanders-Taylor of activities in the Baylor
community.
On July 4, 1915 there was a a rodeo in Opheim to
celebrate the building of the town, which saw its first
business, a grocery/supply store, come to life in 1912.
On page 98 under Richland Bench it said the first
Happy Valley School was built in 1916 with lumber
financed by dances and rodeos.
When the Great Northern Railway reached Opheim
in 1926, the Opheim American Legion sponsored a three-
day celebration with baseball games and a rodeo.
The Ossette community, located south of Richland
and in the southwestern corner of Daniels County, used to
have large Fourth of July celebrations with amateur rodeos
at the McLeod and Wesley Howard ranches in the 1920s,
30s, 40s and 50s.
The Opheim Kiwanis Club, which was organized on
March 19, 1952, sponsored the Frontier Days Rodeo for 14
years from 1957-70, with the 1957 event “the first rodeo
in Opheim in many years.” Four years later the Kiwanians
sponsored the 50th Golden Anniversary of Opheim.
“Old-timers and newcomers of the town of Opheim
celebrated the Golden Anniversary of the founding of the
town on June 16 and 17, 1961.” it said on page 328. “It was a
typical old fashioned atmosphere, with entertainment and
contests for young and old, and topped it all off with the
town’s biggest parades and a true western rodeo.” Other
activities included a barbeque, beard growing contest, old
fashioned dress contest, horseshoe pitching, nail driving
contest, baseball games, horse races, and a dance. “The
main attraction of the Sunday program was another parade
followed by a rodeo, featuring saddle bronc riding, bareback
riding, cow riding, calf roping, team roping, barrel racing
and wild horse scrambles. Both American and Canadian
cowboys participated. The bucking horses were supplied
by Ken Kerr of Wood Mountain, Saskatchewan, and the

Towns of Herbert, Saskatchewan was the arena announcer
and Cliff Stevonson of Canopus, Saskatchewan was arena
director.”
In 1965 the club renovated the 16-acre athletic field
and rodeo ground, with the first rodeo in the new arena
being held July 2-3, 1966. A fall rodeo was held September
11 later that same year. In 1967 the Great Falls American
Legion and Bugle Corps participated in the Opheim
Rodeo. The photo on page 336 of the history book has a
one-half page aerial photo of one of the club’s rodeos and
there are approximately 250 (247 by our count) vehicles
visible in the photo and probably a few more that weren’t
in the photo. This gives one an idea of how many people
were showing up for the event in the late 1960s and/or
early 1970s.
The Opheim Community Club organized and
incorporated in the State of Montana on May 18, 1971
and began sponsoring the annual Frontier Days Rodeo
in 1972, which was the year the club started the souvenir
rodeo booklet as a project. In 1976 new bleachers were
built at the rodeo grounds for the club’s Bicentennial
Rodeo, a two-day event on June 26-27. Shown building
the new bleachers on page 338 are Fred Angermeier, Jim
Bailey, Dave Nelson, Dick Perry, Les Pettit and Myron St.
John.
On page 338 of the history book it told how in
February 1972 several fellows started organizing the first
roping club in the Opheim community. The group called
themselves the “Bits and Spurs Roping Club.” After the
officers were elected, money was borrowed to purchase 12
Mexican roping steers. In 1973 the club found that there
was another roping club by the same name in western
Montana. In order to incorporate the name of this club
had to be changed so the members decided on “The
Opheim Roping Club” as its legal name. The club paid off
its borrowed money in the fall of 1976. There was a lot of
stiff competition back in the 1970s and 1980s with other
Hi-Line Roping Clubs in northeast Montana. The club
helped young teenagers learn pole bending and barrel
racing.
These days the Opheim Rodeo Club has been
running the show, producing a one-day rodeo for the last
two decades. It’s always on the last Sunday of June, with
the parade running along Main Street starting at high
noon with the rodeo starting an hour later. Now it’s your
opportunity to make Opheim Rodeo history by being
