Sluffed loys, opposite page, delight children
of any age- from toddlers to teen-agers.
To cut the various pieces, see the pattern
sketches at the bottom of the opposite page.
All of these dolls require such small amounts
of fabric that you probably will be able to
construct many of them from fabric you have
left over from other sewing projects. So, be-
fore you run out to buy the various materials
needed for the dolls, check your sewing sup-
plies for leftover fabric, spare buttons and buck-
les, small pieces of lace and braid, and partially
used skeins of different colors of yarn.
Cowboy: Cut body, using gingham fabric for
pattern piece B and plain fabric for pattern
piece C. Sew heads to bodies at the neckline
and body top B to body bottom C at waistline.
With right sides together, seam around doll,
leaving a 3-inch opening at top of head. Trim
seams, turn right side out, and stuff. Stitch closed
by hand. Cut felt facial features and hair; stitch
or glue in place. Cut out the hat, then with
right sides together, seam around the top of
crown; turn right side out. With right sides to-
gether, seam the brim to the crown. Turn right
side out; tack to head. Cut out kerchief. Turn
right side out and stitch closed. Tie around neck.
Add a vest cut from felt.
Clown: Cut body from printed fabric, using
pattern piece A. Cut two pieces, sew together,
and stuff as for cowboy. Make hat, following
sketch. For bow tie, cut 4x4-inch square of
striped fabric. Fold in all raw edges; tack. 'Pinch'

in place. Cut felt facial features;. stitch or glue
in place. Add pompons for hair and suit buttons.
Baggy-pants clown: Cut the body, using ging-
ham fabric for pattern piece B and sol id-color
fabric for pattern piece C. Construct as for cow-
boy. For hair, cut short lengths of heavy yarn.
Fold them in half; tack through center to doll's
head. Cut felt facial features, and stitch or glue
in place. Spread yarn to form 'fluffy' hair.
Santa Claus: Cut the• body, using red fabric,
from pattern piece A. Cut two. Construct like
cowboy. Then, fluff yarn for hair and beard, and
sew or glue in place. Cut and glue the facial
features as above. Trim edge of the hat and the
body (to simulate jacket) with white yarn.
Dutch boy: Using solid-color fabric for Band
striped fabric for pattern piece C. cut the body.
Construct like cowboy. Cut hat like sketch; cut
the two headbands lOx1 inches. Gather cir-
cular crown to fit headband. Then stitch, with
right sides together. Seam peaks of cap together
on outside curve; turn right side out. Press.
Seam inner headband to outer headband, sew-
ing cap peak between them at center front. Turn
inner headband to inside; hand-tack to top of
outer headband. Hand-tack cap to head. See
baggy pants clown for instructions on face prep-
aration. Cut kerchief as in sketch. With right
sides together, seam, leaving open a little on
inside edge. Turn right side out; hand-tack
closed. Press. Tie around neck. Sew on four
brass buttons as shown in photo.
