• Resource / Source

• Resource Allocation and Network Management

•3
What is Resource Allocation?
• Networks: Complex distributed systems
– Composed of many hardware & software
components that needs proper configuration
– Input traffic is dynamic
– Failures occur often
– New client/demands arrive
– Guaranteed QoS service needs to be monitored and
ensured
• A network is not a system to be built up, turned
on and used. It needs management.
•4
What is Resource Allocation?
• The goal of communication networks is to
provide service to customer with desired QoS
• Informally, network management is the
activities and technologies to run a network
to provide its required services
• More formally, network management is the
activities, methods, procedures, and tools to
perform the operation, administration,
maintenance, and provisioning of network

•5
OAM&P
• Operation
– Keeping the network and services up and running smoothly
– Monitoring the network to find problems as soon as possible
• Administration
– Overall goals & procedure & keeping track of resources in the
network and how they are assigned
• Maintenance
– Performing repairs and upgrades
• Provisioning
– Configuring resources in the network to provide a service
