Historia
En Grecia, coinciden los historiadores que el desarrollo de los jardines fue

tardío, quizás debido a su orografía montañosa y seca, con muy pocos ríos
y arroyos, mucha escasez de agua, podría haber dado lugar a que los
frondosos jardines de las llanuras persas, no se construyeran en territorio
griego.
Eran más naturalistas, les gustaba contemplar las plantas en su lugar de

origen, en vez de transportarlas a un sitio artificial como es el jardín.
“fue Epicuro maestro del ocio, el primero que en Atenas instituyó

el uso de los jardines de recreo, hasta él, no entraba en las
costumbres vivir el campo dentro de la ciudad”
Historia
Fue en la época Helenística ( desde el 330 a.c. hasta el 30 a.c.)

también llamada alejandrina- llamada así por Alejandro
Magno- en la que el jardín griego alcanzara su mayor
esplendor y gloria es en esta época en la que se crearon las
casas de campo con sus jardines, no obstante, abundaban más
en Grecia los parques con arbolado público, en los que se
celebraban reuniones políticas, académicas o filosóficas.
Vitruvio afirma que en las grandes ciudades helenísticas, los
teatros estaban rodeados de jardines.

Grecia tenía muchos Dioses y a la vez Templos dedicados a esto Dioses.

Las manifestaciones litúrgicas fuera de los Templos las hacían en los
Bosques.
Los griegos en cierto sentido, eran como los orientales, no existía el

concepto del jardín, porque además el jardín no existían en su entorno, era
la propia naturaleza el lugar sagrado y de esparcimiento, en escenarios
naturales ponían a sus dioses, estatuas que los protegían y a las que
adoraban y respetaban, los dioses del monte Olimpo de Grecia es un
ejemplo de todo esto, el pueblo griego, no tenía el concepto de jardín
privado
Espacios Comunes
Espacios Comunes. Son como unas plazas públicas. Surgen debido al tipo
de organización política griega. Se discuten los temas políticos en la calle
(por el buen clima). Son Plazas arboladas, en algunos lugares plantaban
árboles y hacían la plaza pública.
Algunos jardines eran lugares públicos o semipúblicos, patios o huertos,

arboledas, fuentes sagradas y Academias.
Solían plantar: Olmos, Plátanos, Taxus, Chopos. en la Academia (Escuela)

solían dar las clases al aire libre. Tenían sensación de humedad y
sombra.En las pinturas del renacimiento se ven estos detalles.
Jardines Privados
Era en las casas y presentaban el jardín en la parte posterior. Lo tenían las

personas con más riqueza. El jardín era pequeño, estaba cerrado por una
valla, se le llamaba XYSTU. Este tipo de jardín es la base de los jardines
que se popularizaron en la época romana.
En el caso de jardines privados, solían ser patios, con diseños de eje

central y laterales simétricos, predominando más los elementos
arquitectónicos que los vegetales, estos patios estaban rodeados de
columnas.
En cuanto a los jardines de las viviendas, las habitaciones daban a un patio

interior llamado peristilo, casi siempre pavimentado, decorado con estatuas
y plantas en tiestos.

Mitológicos
Se conocen por las descripciones de Homero, básicamente de la Odisea.
Forman parte de la mitología griega ( el primer mito fue el del laberinto de
minotauro) y sirven como referencias.
“hay un gran jardín de cuatro yugadas, y alrededor del

mismo se extiende un seto por entrambos lados. Allí han
crecido grandes y florecientes árboles: perales,
granados, manzanos de espléndidas manzanas, dulces
higueras, verdes olivos.”

Generalidades
Tanto en los jardines públicos como privados los griegos

cultivaban los árboles en grupos que disponían en
alineaciones o de forma irregular, adaptaban sus jardines a
la vegetación existente y a la topografía, trataban de integrar
las construcciones con el entorno.
Utilizaban variadas especies de árboles frutales, vides y

árboles de sombra como el álamo, el ciprés, el olmo y el
plátano. También incluían en sus jardines arbustos
ornamentales y arriates con flores, en especial la rosa.
