What is Systems Engineering ?

• System engineering is concerned with all aspects

of computer-based systems including hardware,
software, processes, development, and
maintenance.
• Thus, it is a part of developing the software
infrastructure, control, applications and databases
in the system.

17/05/2020 Dr. Hiba Zuhair 3

What a System Engineer must do ?

The system engineer must:

• analyse system specifications and significance,

• design the system architecture,
• prepare the IT infrastructure,
• do the integration and deployment of system
components.
• Test the system
• study the cost-effectiveness and risk probability
system,
• Maintain and develop the system after test

17/05/2020 Dr. Hiba Zuhair 4

Why the System Engineer must do altogether ?
Because:

• To produce professional tools and cost-effective

software
• To guarantee a long life system with minimum
maintenance efforts and development costs.

• Last (A RELIABLE SYSTEM MUST BE PRODUCED)

17/05/2020 Dr. Hiba Zuhair 5

What are the features of RELIABLE SYSTEM?

• The system should deliver the required functionality

and performance to the stakeholder
• It should be maintainable, dependable and
acceptable.

17/05/2020 Dr. Hiba Zuhair 6

What is a SYSTEM RELIABLITY?

✓ Maintainability ?
System must evolve to meet changing needs;
✓ Dependability ?
System must be trustworthy;
✓ Efficiency ?
System should not make wasteful use of computer
resources;
✓ Acceptability ?
System must be accepted by the stakeholders and
users for whom it is designed. This means it must be
understandable, usable and compatible with other
systems.

NOW …. !
What is the Theory of Reliability ?

17/05/2020 Dr. Hiba Zuhair 8

Reliability Theory means….
In theoretical form…
“The ability of system to perform a required function
under given operational and environmental conditions for
a specified period of time."
In statistical form:
“The probability of system failure in a specified
environment for a specified time."
A simple measure of reliability is the summation of :
R(t) = MTTF + MTTR
MTTF : mean time to system failure
MTTR : mean time to system

repair.
Dr. Hiba Zuhair 9
How to measure System Reliability ?
BY…..

➢ Mean time to Failure (MTTF)

➢ Failure Rate : Number of failures per a time unit

➢ Survival Probability : The probability that the system does

not fail in a time interval (0, t]

➢ Availability at Time (t) The probability that the system is

able to function at time t
