FOR ALL YOUR ELECTRICAL NEEDS®
Now a major
motion picture
By Jeremy Venook
O
n the table
beside my bed
lies the school
library’s copy of “The
Road,” by Cormac
McCarthy. I found it a
thoroughly engrossing book, full of insightful, albeit grim,
glimpses into the nature of morality and human willpower, and
critics apparently agreed with my assessment — the novel won
the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2007.
But you wouldn’t necessarily know that just from looking at
the book’s cover. Aside from the title and the name of the
author, the most notable distinction
gleaned from a cursory glance is not the
prestigious literary honor but an emblem
announcing that the book is “Now a Major
Motion Picture.” In contrast, the Pulitzer
announcement is in much smaller font
along the bottom of the cover.
I have no problem with the concept of
making books into movies, and everything
I’ve heard indicates that the movie of “The
Road,” which starred Viggo Mortensen, was a well-crafted film
that accurately captured the nature of the book (incidentally,
the movie version of McCarthy’s other most famous book,
“No Country for Old Men,” won the Oscar for Best Picture a
few years ago). And I was ecstatic recently when I heard that
one of my favorite books, Jonathan Safran Foer’s “Extremely
Loud and Incredibly Close,” is set to be made into a movie
with Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks. Turning a book into a
film can be a fantastic way to pay homage to a worthy novel
and a fantastic opportunity to bring more widespread attention
to the source, hopefully encouraging more people to pick it up
at a local bookstore.
My problem, though, was the weight the publishers decided
to give that particular declaration on the cover. To me, the
mere existence of a movie isn’t a particularly good indicator of
a book’s quality — after all, it’s a distinction shared by
“Twilight,” which is by no stretch of the imagination a modern
classic. And some books simply aren’t the right source materi-
al to be made into a popular, or even good, film. For every suc-
cessful adaptation like “The Godfather” or “Gone with the
Wind,” there are countless other classics that, while irreplace-
able in the literary canon, would hardly work on the silver
screen. And the version that reaches theaters is inevitably con-
densed to fit the constraints of performance that aren’t consid-
erations for the author. As fantastic as the movie “To Kill a
Mockingbird” may be (it’s hard to separate the character of
Atticus Finch from Gregory Peck’s outstanding portrayal), it’s
a decidedly condensed version of Harper Lee’s original novel,
one that loses plot points and character development for the
sake of time.
Besides, as good as the movie adaptation may be, I can’t
help but worry that stressing its production is an indicator that
we as a society are simply moving away from good ol’ books.
Television, movies and the Internet are so vibrant, so appealing
to all of our senses, that it can be hard to remember the joy of
