eing in the fashion industry and
currently in the throes of
organising my own wedding,
there is much talk about my
dress for the big day. It is the first question
people ask me, always with a concerned
look on their face ‘so what will you wear?
You don’t have much time, are you
stressing out?’ Truth be told, I saw, paid
and bought my dress in around seven
minutes, two days after I was proposed
to. This ease came down to nothing but
sheer luck – they do say, after all, that you always find what
you’re searching for when you’re least expecting it. I came into the office to
do some research on internet shopping. I am embarrassed to say that in
this day and age, I do not shop online. It makes me nervous. I like to try
things on, feel fabrics and admittedly, check my outfit from every angle
before committing. But there I was on net-a-porter.com typing in the word
‘wedding’ and up it popped – my dress.
I emailed a picture to my mother and sister in Australia and within
moments got their stamp of approval, so I whipped out my credit card
and bought the dress. No trying on sessions, no tears, no mall trawls just
me and my PC.
It felt strangely liberating at the time, but when the dress arrived
a few days later panic had started to set in. The big white box was sat
across from my desk, waiting patiently for me to take it home and try
on. But as it sat there looking all pretty, one thought kept niggling…
What had I done? I don’t even buy T-shirts online let alone my wedding
dress – what possessed me?! In a dismal attempt to try it on at home (have
you ever done up a corset sans assistance?) I put in an emergency call to my
friend and designer Rami Al Ali. The lovely Rami is making my (other)
dress for the church ceremony, so with white box in hand, I hotfooted it to
his atelier faster than you can say Vivienne Westwood.
With some much-needed extra hands to clip, fasten, zip and fit the dress,
finally there I was – standing in tiered taffeta, which fitted (just) to absolute
perfection. What a strange feeling indeed. As I posed this way and that in
front of the mirror, I was transported back to when I bought the dress. It
had been listed under the heading of ‘fashion forward bride’ and at that
moment, stood in front of the mirror, that’s exactly how I felt.
I had heard so many horror stories about brides not being able to choose
their gown through having too many or not enough options, or having to
travel abroad to find the dream dress, but for me, buying my wedding dress
has been the least stressful part of the entire wedding process so far. The
moral of this story, and my few words of advice, is do what feels right when
it comes to your wedding – whatever the task. We all spend so long
worrying, stressing and fretting about what we should or shouldn’t wear
that we lose half the fun in the process. Focus less on the ‘what ifs’ and more
on the here and now.
On that note, it’s back to my PC for me… I still have my veil to
buy after all.

ichard and Poppy, 32 and 28 respectively, were friends for nearly
10 years before they started dating. Having met through mutual
friends, it wasn’t until a rather boring party that they realised they
had so much in common. They chatted all night and by the end, Poppy had
agreed to a dinner date with Richard the following weekend. Nearly a year to
the day of their first date, Richard surprised Poppy with a trip to Paris and
proposed. With advice to keep the proposal low-key from Poppy’s mother,
Richard got down on one knee in the hotel bedroom with an amazing two-
tier Tiffany’s inspired ring handmade by Vikram at UMI Pearls, Dubai. For
her hen do, Poppy had dinner with some close girlfriends in the UK, while
Richard’s stag was spent in Bournemouth with the boys. As Poppy’s mother
had grown up in Italy, she had always wanted to get married there. Having
found the perfect villa in Lucca, disaster struck when four months later the
villa was unavailable. Poppy’s mother came to the rescue, flying to Italy to
find two new planners in Carolina and Fulvia, who found the couple a
new dream wedding location at the beautiful Castello di Montegufoni.

THE WEDDING
With Italy being the perfect destination, both Poppy
and Richard knew the importance of having the best
wedding planners, and having people able to stay on
site. The location they found literally took their breath
away.
UÊReception venue: As the chapel was too small, we
got married in the largest room of the castle.
A wonderfully bright, opulently decorated hall – truly
stunning.
UÊTheme: As the location was so rustic, our theme
was classic with a vintage twist to reflect this. We
used antique plates, table settings, furniture and rustic
coloured flowers.
U Guests: 120, with friends coming from mainly Dubai
and England.
UÊDress: I wanted something unique that I could wear
again. My friend spotted the perfect dress for me in
S*uce, Dubai Mall – a 30’s vibe, with tiered capped
sleeves, small peplum at the waist and fitted to the
floor. It’s my first long dress and I felt
a million dollars.
U Shoes: Blush pink satin Louboutin’s with a small bow
at the toes. I bought them from the Christian Louboutin
boutique with my mother on a trip to the UK. I knew I
had to have them!
UÊHat: I didn’t want anything typically bridal, I had
a 50’s style cream pill box hat with a large pink and
cream taffeta flower on the back and short peach veil
with cream pearls.
UÊRings: Vikram from UMI Pearls designed mine –
a full diamond band to fit around my engagement ring.
UÊBridesmaids: My four closest friends wore dresses
from Reiss. It was a group effort with me choosing the
dresses, one friend finding the shoes and another the
hair-pieces. My friend Antonia also made each of them

UÊCake: A traditional one-layer millefoglie cake
surrounded by fruit.
UÊFlowers: Amnesia roses mixed with Old Dutch roses
for my bouquet and then Old Dutch roses with cream
roses for the tables.

had us sold from our first tasting evening with him! We
had two pasta dishes to start, followed by beef with
rosemary potatoes and green beans. Dessert was our
wedding cake with dessert wine.
UÊUnique touches: As is traditional in Italian weddings,
a bag containing five sugared almonds was put on
each person’s table setting. Also, as our favourite smell
is lavender, a little sprig of lavender from my aunt’s field
was placed on each setting.
UÊHoneymoon: We chose South Africa and spent
a week travelling the Garden Route followed by
a week on safari in Addo. ■

aura Perez and Gonzalo Rodriguez met two years ago, at a
friend’s wedding in India – their love story is a unique one.
Laura, who hails from Mexico, was living there at the time,
whilst Gonzalo was based in his home country of Spain. A friendship
blossomed at the wedding, and as luck would have it Gonzalo was
due to move to Mexico a month later, having accepted a job in a hotel.
Mexico is a huge country, but fate played its card again, as Gonzalo
moved to Cancun where Laura was living. It was evident from the
beginning that destiny believed these two belonged together. The
couple moved to Dubai in the summer of 2009, and after a beautiful
proposal at Qasr Al Sarab, they planned the wedding of their dreams

STEP THREE
Both the English and Arabic certificates
then need to be certified by the Notary
Public Office at the Dubai Courts for a fee
of Dh110.
STEP FOUR
The paperwork then needs to be processed
and authenticated by the Ministry of Justice
for Dh52. This is followed by verification by
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Dh150.
STEP FIVE
You can then have your marriage legalised
for your country of citizenship by taking
the certificates to your embassy who will
process the information.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
● Original passports plus certified copies
need to be provided by both parties.
● If either bride or groom is divorced
decrees need to be provided.
● Generally a ‘no objection’ letter is
required by your embassy – fees vary.
● The church will provide a standard
form, which needs to be completed by
both parties.
ISLAMIC MARRIAGES
STEP ONE
The couple intending to marry, together with the
bride-to-be’s father or her legal suitor and two
other male Muslim witnesses must be present
at the Islamic marriage court for the ceremony
to take place. All witnesses must present their
passports which states they are either UAE citizens
or valid UAE residence holders. To be married
under Sharia’ah law, the groom must be Muslim,
while the bride can be of any religion. Before
the wedding, a dowry has to be confirmed and
paid to the bride. If this does not occur, a written
declaration must be provided stating that there is
no dowry.
STEP TWO
Following the ceremony a UAE marriage
license will be issued for a Dh50 fee in
addition to a Dh10 fee for identification
purposes. If the marriage is conducted outside
of the UAE and you want the agreement to be
legalised here the documentation will need
to be taken to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
of the United Arab Emirates for ratification.
If the certificate is in another language other
than Arabic it will need to be translated and
ratified by the Ministry of Justice.
STEP THREE
Final authentication, for non-UAE citizens,
is then required by your embassy or consulate,
which involves a varying fee.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
● Original passports and photocopies need to be
presented by all involved.
● Identification papers are also required by the
bride’s father or guardian, as well as the two
witnesses.
● If the bride’s father is deceased, a Sharia
Declaration of his death must be provided. In this
case she must have consent from her brother or an
uncle. If there are no male relatives to give consent,
documentation of proof is necessary. Alternatively
if the bride’s father cannot be present, he must
provide a letter of consent, along with a certified
copy of his passport to verify his signature.
● In the case that the bride is Muslim and her
father is not, a certificate of no impediment (no
objection) is required from either the bride’s
embassy or consulate.
INDIAN MARRIAGES
STEP ONE
Following the engagement, you must
organise for three witnesses with
residency visas to accompany you to
the consulate Marriage Officer. Here
you will need to provide a Notice
of Intended Marriage form plus pay
a fee of Dh190. This entitles you to
a newspaper marriage notification
whereby the couple must then wait
30 days for any objections. After this
a date for solemnization is given
provided there were no objections.
STEP TWO
A day before the confirmed ceremony
the couple and their witnesses need
to provide original passports to the
Marriage Officer. The following day
is the final solemniztion of marriage
where everyone invited to
the wedding can attend.
STEP THREE
If the couple requires a religious
ceremony under the Muslim or
Christian faith, they should follow
the guidelines given above for correct
procedures on ceremonies and
attesting certificates. Alternatively the
Church of South India (CSI) parish
in Karama offers services for their
members and can be contacted on
(04) 3372111. The Hindu Temple
in Bur Dubai is available for Hindu
ceremonies, phone (04) 3535334.
