SCOPE OF WORK
Project: File Convert

Date: 12/19/2010 Last Update: 12/19/2010

Creator: A. Lambert

CONVERSION TOOL:
This tool will import a simple tab or comma delimited text file and reconfigure records/data to a
flat “single line” per record tab delimited file. Currently the import file is tab delimited. Each
record has up five sub-components to the record.
Example:
a. Line 1 (primary set) has about 10 columns of data (tab delimited)
b. Line 2 has about 10 columns of data (tab delimited)
c. Line 3 has about 10 columns of data (tab delimited)
d. Line 4 (sometimes not present) has about 10 columns of data (tab delimited)
e. Line 5 (sometimes not present) has about 10 columns of data (tab delimited)
i. Sometimes there may be two (2) Line 5 s in the same subset. This should be
treated the same as any other line and appended to the primary data set (Line
1)
f. Line 6 (sometimes not present) has about 10 columns of data (tab delimited)
This tool will need to have a fully install executable that will run on windows xp; server 2003;
windows 7 (32 bit)and(64 bit)

PERFORMANCE/EXECUTION:
We would like to be able to have the tool do the following:
1. Locate the file by user selecting a “drop down” “locate file menu. This should use the standard
Microsoft drop down locate window.
2. Have the tool convert the file from 1 up to 6 lines per record to (1) one line per record in a tab
delimited format.
a. This will be achieved by reading the 1st line of the record and appending each
subsequent line to the first line until all the subsequent lines (2-6) have been appended.
b. Which line the subset is listed in column 6 and can be read from column 6.
3. The tool should allow the user to rename the converted file, saving the file as a .txt tab
delimited file.
4. The tool should allow for tab or comma delimited files to be converted.
5. The tool should allow the user to select the new director and file name for the converted file
prior to conversion. This should use the standard Microsoft drop down locate window.
6. The converted file should always be completed in a TAB delimited format.

USER INTERFACE:
The user interface can be a simple screen or web page. We prefer web page but are open to other
options.

Below is a mock suggestion for what the tool cold look like.

I. Upon closing, the program should remember last settings. When this program is re-opened or
executed, the last settings should re-appear from memory.

Figure 2 depicts the standard Microsoft file open/location window. This or a file locator similar to this
should be used for options “B” and “F” from Figure 1.

INSTALLATION
All the enclosed web pages, instructions, databases and all other necessary items should be included in
a compressed installation executable. This file should be included in a standard zipped file.
