lows of the American Association
for the Advancement of Science.
The association is the largest of
its kind and rewards scientists for

The faculty who were named fel-
lows are biologist Kerry S. Bloom,
anthropologist Paul W. Leslie,
chemist Wenbin Lin, computer sci-
entist Dinesh Manocha, geneticist
and psychiatrist Patrick F. Sullivan
and physicist John F. Wilkerson.
The UNC faculty honored were
six of 503 named AAAS fellows
this year. The honor will be for-
malized at a February ceremony in
Washington, D.C.
Study shows black men have
distrust of medical providers
A study from the UNC Gillings
School of Global Public Health
has shown that black men are less
likely to seek routine medical care
because they distrust health care
providers, and not out of a desire
to display their masculinity, as had
previously been assumed.
The study was based on a sur-
vey of 610 black men aged 20 or
older recruited mainly in barber-
shops across the nation. Its results
appear in the December 2010 issue
of the Journal of General Internal
Medicine.
Although non-Hispanic white
men were less likely to seek such
care out of a desire to appear more
masculine, mistrust of the health
care system was found to be an
obstacle among black men. Black
men were still less likely to seek
routine care or know their cho-
lesterol levels, and they faced an
increased risk of death from easily
preventable conditions.
The next step in researchers’
work will be identifying reasons
for black male mistrust in health
care providers.

Applicants who have family ties
to certain universities could have
a significant leg up on admis-
sions.
A recent study by a Harvard
University student found that leg-
acy applicants are seven times as
likely to be admitted to universities
than non-legacies.
Some UNC administrators say
this rings true on campus, but
mainly for out-of-state appli-
cants.
Stephen Farmer, associate pro-
vost and undergraduate admissions
director at UNC, said the University
does take into consideration if an
applicant’s parents or stepparents
graduated from UNC, but legacy
is looked at more for out-of-state
applicants than in-state.
“That means that alumni sons or
daughters do have a greater chance
of attending UNC,” Farmer said.
According to UNC’s admission
policy, preference can be given to
non-resident applicants that are
children of alumni.
The policy does not mention in-
state applicants.
“Legacy doesn’t really go into
play for North Carolinians but can
be used,” Farmer said.
He said the admission office does
not overrule academic factors.
“It offers some benefit to some
out-of-state students, but that
doesn’t overcome poor academ-
ics.”
Of the 2,824 out-of-state stu-
dents who were accepted to the
University in 2010, about 7.7 per-
cent were legacies.
“I think that the way we practice
legacy admission here is measured
in a moderate response to the rela-

After a stint off-Broadway and a
tour around the world, Lisa Ramirez
is bringing her provocative one-
woman show to Kenan Theatre.
Ramirez — former New York
nanny turned playwright — is
presenting her play, “Exit Cuckoo
(Nanny in Motherland),” as part of
PlayMakers Repertory Company’s
discussion oriented series, PRC2.
“(The play is) my journey from
California to New York as a nanny,”
said Ramirez, who wrote and acts
alone in the play.
“Exit Cuckoo” was not a show
that many wanted to put on,
Ramirez said.
“When Broadway producers
came to watch it they really liked
it, but they thought that some of
the characters would alienate some
audiences,” she said.
The play follows a fictionalized
story of motherhood, nannying and

Ensler — known best for her

unteer and member of the advocacy
group, Domestic Workers United.

Mill House adds
60 properties

After managing properties in the
area for almost 10 years, one local
real estate company has joined
forces with a former competitor.
The Dec. 29 acquisition of
Redstone Properties of Chapel
Hill-Carrboro by Mill House
Properties brought more than 60
new properties to the company,
bringing the total to more than
300 — though they still are not
the area’s largest.
Mill House markets two types
of rental properties: “Varsity” for
undergraduates and “Pro” for pro-
fessionals and graduate students.
Mill House owner Adam Jones
said most of the acquired prop-
erties, which are mainly near
McCauley Street and the Westwood
neighborhood, fall into the “Pro”
category.
Since Mill House primarily
caters to UNC students, Jones said
the merger marks an effort for his
company to increase its number of
professional renters.
“We’re still student-heavy, but
this balances things out a bit,” he
said.
Redstone Properties owner
Sharon Fowler said she will stay
on with the company and man-
age some properties. She said she
rents to many graduate students
but only those with previous rental
histories.
“That’s important to me,” Fowler
said.
Neither Fowler nor Jones said
they knew if prices for transition-
ing rental properties will change.
“We’re reviewing that right
now, and we’re going to determine
if we’re going to raise those rents
a little over the next year,” Jones
said.
Jones said the aim of the merger
is not to manage the most proper-
ties but to continue to offer proper-
ties close to downtown and in good
shape.
“I don’t want to grow bigger just
for the sake of being big,” Jones
said.
After working on her own,
Fowler said she welcomed the
merge because she thought Mill
House advertised their properties
effectively and shared her value of
quality real estate.
And despite a decline in the
number of undergraduate students
who lived off-campus, Jones said
he is not concerned about filling
up the rental properties.

ed. The bill, which went into effect
in November, reforms basic work

“Lisa’s level of advocacy paired
with the level of engagement and
conversation will make for a per-
fect match with the series,” said
Jeffrey Meanza, PlayMakers’ asso-
ciate artistic director.
After each PRC2 show, the audi-
ence is given the chance to interact
with the artist and scholars knowl-
edgeable of the topic at hand.
“This show fits into what the
PRC2 series calls for,” said Hannah
Grannemann, managing director
at PlayMakers.
Ramirez said she thinks she
retains a balanced point of view on
the nanny-mother relationship in
“Exit Cuckoo” by not placing blame
on either party.
“Whenever you talk about
women raising other people’s chil-
dren, everyone has an opinion,” she
said.
For now, the play will try to keep
the University talking.

Though Orange County has lost
two employees who worked to aid
the local economy, more flexibility
for the plans to restructure the eco-
nomic department could be gained
as a result.
The resignation of Brad
Broadwell, Orange County’s for-
mer economic development officer,
came just weeks after Carrboro’s
economic officer James Harris
announced his retirement.
Because Broadwell announced
his resignation, the county is start-
ing an external search for someone
with previous experience in eco-
nomic development, said Orange
County Manager Frank Clifton.
Broadwell resigned from his
position in order to pursue other
opportunities, Clifton said.
“He has a lot of international
experience, so maybe that’s where
his interest lies,” Clifton said.
Clifton said in the future he
hopes to see the non-residential
tax-base increase and for the county
to work closer with the University.
“Going forward is what we want
to concentrate on,” he said.
“Increasing the level of col-
laboration between the town and
county as well as public and private
sectors are our important goals.”

academic year, Thorp instructed
departments to prepare for a per-
manent cut of about $26 million —
or 5 percent — effective July 1.
“The governor has asked for 2.5
percent back,” Thorp said, “and if you
give back two-and-a-half percent
in the middle of the year, that’s the
same thing as having 5 percent.”
In an interview Tuesday, Carney
said he worked through the week-
end devising plans for individual
units. Carney declined to comment
on any details before Thursday,
when he plans to deliver a letter
to individual departments with
instructions for implementing the
cuts.
Depar tments had already
received instructions to make
preparations for cuts of at least 5
percent for the upcoming year.
“We’ve been asked to plan for a
range of cuts of up to 15 percent.,”
said Dick Mann, vice chancellor for
finance and administration. “We
think that would be devastating
obviously at that level and would
have a significant effect on our
academic programs as well as our
support activities.”
Carney said he was surprised by
the cut.
“Normally the state does these
sorts of things if there is a problem
with the cash flow, and I don’t see
a cash flow problem with the state
right now,” he said.
Eyeing the end of federal
stimulus funding and state sales
tax, University officials have long
looked uneasily to the 2011-12 fis-
cal year. This year’s initial state
budget cut of 5 percent — and a
1 percent Management Flexibility
Reduction outlined in the Aug. 24
budget memorandum — was pre-
ceded in the 2009-10 fiscal year
with a devastating 10 percent cut.
“We knew 2011 would be a tough
year. Last year, when the budget
got passed, we weren’t under any
false assumptions that that was the
end,” Thorp said. “Thank goodness
we had the stimulus money and the
extra sales tax, or else two years ago
would have been unbearable.
“I’m not sure how we would have
survived it.”
Salary freezes — with some
exceptions — have been in place
during each of those years, and
another one is anticipated for the
2011-12 fiscal year. Thorp said he
understood Gov. Perdue’s decision
“Any time you have a change in direc-
tor, you have an opportunity to examine
whatever that department is doing.”

Bassett said Broadwell’s resigna-
tion has no obvious impact on his
work for Chapel Hill.
“I’ve been in Chapel Hill for
four years, and the workload and
demands of this position have
grown increasingly,” Bassett said.
“Chapel Hill and the Town
Council have been working stra-
tegically to move economic devel-
opment forward. We would like to
see additional development in the
county and benefits for residents
and taxpayers.”
An economic development offi-
cer plays an important role in coor-
dinating interaction between the
community and local government,
Clifton said.
Economic development offi-
cers’ duties include meeting with
potential clients and companies
who want to locate to the area and
facilitating conversations between
companies and internal staff.

Barry Jacobs said county govern-
ment will hold a work session in
February to begin the search for a
qualified candidate.
“Our focus will be on what we
want in an economic development
director, and what kind of instruc-
tor will work best for Orange
County.”

Verizon Wireless Ability to protect State of the Union

The iPhone is finally coming to
Verizon Wireless.
Verizon confirmed the long-
rumored move on Tuesday,
announcing it will begin selling
Apple’s iPhone 4, the latest ver-
sion of the device, Feb. 10. Existing
Verizon customers can start pre-
ordering the device Feb. 3.
The Verizon version of the
iPhone has few differences from
the one that AT&T began selling
last summer. The most notable
differences are that it works
on Verizon’s network, which is
incompatible with AT&T’s wire-
less technology, and that Verizon
iPhone users will be able to use
the device as a Wi-Fi hot spot to
connect up to five other gadgets
to the Internet. The other chief
difference is, because of a limita-
tion with the technology Verizon
uses, users of the Verizon iPhone,
unlike users of the AT&T version,
won’t be able to talk on the phone
and surf the Web at the same time
over Verizon’s network.
Verizon will be selling the
iPhone for $200 for the 16-giga-
byte version and $300 for the
32-gigabyte model with a two-

Doctors say Giffords can breathe on
her own and will recover at own pace

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ condi-
tion is “the same as yesterday,”
physicians at the University of
Arizona College of Medicine’s

conference, but she is now
breathing on her own.
“She is able to generate her
own breaths,” said Dr. Peter
Lemole, the neurosurgeon who
operated on her after the shoot-
ing on Saturday morning.

tors have left a breathing tube in
place in an effort to prevent her
from developing pneumonia.

year. Have you started work-
ing on those resolutions yet?
Whether it’s losing the holi-
day pounds, quitting smoking,
or getting organized, keep it up:
You might start having better sex
because of it.
Sexual health, as defined by
the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, is “a state of
physical, emotional, mental and
social well-being in relation to
sexuality.” It is a holistic condi-
tion affected by different parts of
your general health and lifestyle,
and improving any of those parts
can also improve your sexual
health.
Getting physically fit can most
noticeably enhance your body
image and increase your sexual
self-esteem. Increasing your ath-
leticism outside of bed can also
increase your physical stamina
and prowess in bed. In addition,
having high blood pressure and
high cholesterol is correlated with
decreased sexual interest and
function for women, and with
erectile dysfunction for men.
Becoming a nonsmoker is cer-
tainly starting to be more socially
and olfactorily desirable, espe-
cially for many people looking for
a sexual or romantic partner. On
top of that, smoking is associated
with male erectile dysfunction
later in life, and it is a major risk
factor for bladder cancer which
can severely impair your sexual
function.
Getting organized is a great
way to become more efficient and
allow more time for you to focus
on other aspects of your life, like
friends, romance or sex. It can
also help you to reduce stress,
and many sexual dysfunctions
can arise out of stress-related
problems, such as anxiety or
depression.
If you’re not feeling sexy
enough, you might also consider
adding a few resolutions just for
your sexual health.
Get educated. Research what
it means for you to be sexually
healthy, so that you can recognize
when there might be a problem
like a sexual dysfunction or sexu-
ally transmitted infection. You’ll
probably discover that you’re not
alone and that there are solutions
available.
Get comfortable. Once you’ve
learned more about sexual
health, you should start to feel
more at ease talking about sex
and consequently more at ease
having sex. Communication with
a sexual partner is important
for having pleasurable sex, and
discussing your sexual concerns
with someone is a great step
towards getting help.
Get tested. If you are sexu-
ally active, you are at some risk
for contracting HIV or other
STIs. Sometimes, you’ll exhibit
symptoms, but often you won’t.
Getting tested is the best way to
know for sure, to get treated, and
to avoid passing it on.
Get protected. Using barrier
protection like condoms and den-
tal dams is an effective method
for preventing STIs or unwanted
pregnancy.
If you’re not already using
protection, consider introducing
the practice more into your sex
life or asking your sexual partner
about it. You can also lower your
risk of getting or spreading STIs
by reducing your number of part-
ners and asking partners’ testing
status.
Good luck with those new
year’s resolutions. Maybe the kick
you need is “I resolve to have bet-
ter sex.” Can’t hurt.

he Legal Aid of North
Carolina Pittsboro Office
is doing a service to both
community members and the
UNC School of Law by part-
nering to provide legal advice
to low-income individuals
seeking divorce.
By partnering with UNC in
the new program, Legal Aid
will provide a needed service
while affording UNC Law stu-
dents with a valuable opportu-
nity for practice.
Legal Aid traditionally pro-
vides counsel to needy indi-
viduals who find themselves in
“emergency” legal situations,
like obtaining a restrain-
ing order against an abusive
spouse.
Filing for divorce may not
involve the urgency typical of
Legal Aid’s cases. But it is still,
almost without exception, a

Hill’s magistrate office will
close. The office was identified
as possibly being overstaffed,
and Chief District Court Judge
Joe Buckner declined to reap-

we applaud the county for
thinking of creative ways to
reduce government costs dur-
ing an economic downturn.
Orange County commission-
ers and planners should con-
tinue to look at other counties
to find innovative and effective
ways to decrease government
expenditures.
Centralizing county services

money in the short term, as
long as it is accompanied by a

Three tiers for faculty
Best professors deserve to have seniority recognized

n July 1 of the next fis-
cal year, UNC could
tentatively join the
ranks of other institutions in
employing a three-tier system
for recognizing tenured profes-
sors.
This move is a long-awaited
step in the right direction in
honoring UNC’s fixed-term
faculty members’ careers. With
the proposed promotional
rank, tenured-track professors
will be able to earn a third title
based on exceptional perfor-
mance.
If the three-tier system is
approved by both the Board
of Trustees and the Board of
Governors, a new title of “mas-
ter lecturer” could become the
highest promotion available for
fixed-term faculty. Members

a lawyer to help them navigate
the daunting paperwork and
intimidating jargon that comes
with filing for divorce.
By helping community mem-
bers work through the arduous
process, students will have the
chance to see how the laws they
learn in the classroom play out
in the real world.
Victims of domestic vio-
lence who cannot afford their
own attorney — that is, people
who might seek help from
Legal Aid in the initial phases
of their separation — are still
very much in need of counsel
in a divorce’s final stages.
The assurance and guidance
of a professional is invaluable
when attempting to divorce an

The Orange County Board
of Commissioners should look
at other services that might
be best provided at the coun-
ty level, but without placing
the financial burden on low-
income residents — the peo-
ple that are most likely to use
government health and social
services and least likely to have
the time or transportation to

in small claims cases or seeking

Lastly, it should be clarified
that while this new service will
make the process of divorce itself
less of a headache, it will not
make divorce easier, legally.
North Carolina law still
stipulates that a couple must
be separate for a year before
they can be legally divorced,
which provides a significant
prohibition against rash deci-
sion-making.
The department should
remain vigilant in searching
for ways to keep those costs
down as well.
Several months ago, the
Board of Commissioners voted
to close one of the county’s two
dental clinics and consolidate
services to one location in
Hillsborough.
Hillsborough, although
smaller in population than
Chapel Hill, is geographically
in the middle of the county,
making it a good location for
Orange County residents that
live away from any major cit-
ies.
Perhaps in better times,
city and county officials might
even find greater efficacy in a
centralized model. After a few
years of experimenting, they
can choose the best model for
Orange County’s residents.

benefits to a professor’s career.
If UNC wants to maintain
its exceptional learning envi-
ronment, it must continue to
strive to recognize the profes-
sors who have made this envi-

Over the past 10 years the
IFC, town of Chapel Hill and
numerous community organi-
zations have been planning and
searching for a new site for a
transitional housing facility for
homeless men.
One of the specific needs iden-
tified during this process was
access to public transportation.
The mobility of the homeless is
often constrained by certain social
and geographical factors, includ-
ing the location of public services
and lack of access to reliable,
affordable and easy transporta-
tion options. Mobility is crucial
to the ability of homeless people
to move between stigmatized and
non-stigmatized places, such as
employment. Public transporta-
tion services offer a critical out-
let for homeless individuals with
limited resources who must use
public transit to access services,
shelter, affordable housing, edu-
cation and employment.
The proximity of 1315 Martin
Luther King Jr. Blvd., the pro-
posed Community House loca-
tion, to a major transportation
artery satisfies the critical pub-
lic transportation need identified
above. Locating the Community
House at this site makes sense
because it means future resi-
dents will be able to conveniently
take a bus to work, to a class at
Durham Tech’s Orange County
Campus or to UNC, and to con-
veniently access common house-
hold necessities.

House proposal, and I hope that
the advisory boards and Town
Council approve it.

AZ shooting likely not a
result of vitriolic discourse
TO THE EDITOR:
I was extremely disappointed
in the Jan. 11 editorial, “A teach-
able tragedy: Shooting strikes a
chord for more measured tone.”
You blame the recent shooting
in Arizona on the “toxic politi-
cal environment” and the lack
of civil discourse despite the fact
that links between the shooter
and political movements are
murky, at best.
Jared Loughner’s writings and
videos more clearly indicate that
he may have been suffering from
mental illness. While all those
who struggle with mental illness
obviously aren’t violent, that this
facet of the story was ignored to
fuel a narrative focused on cul-
ture wars is disturbing.
I am no fan of Sarah Palin,
but it seems strange to blame
horrific violence on the words
of politicians, when the perpe-
trator seems to have lived in a
world entirely separate from our
political discussions. To consider
this tragedy “teachable” in how
we should discuss politics is to
misread and exploit it. Rather,
it should be “teachable” in rais-
ing our awareness of those in
our midst who suffer invisibly.
Considering potential shoot-
ers “crazy people with renegade
intentions” is a vast oversimpli-
fication — one that is potentially
dangerous for Americans of all
political persuasions.
Rushing to join the movement
to blame politicians for the shoot-
ing indicates blindness toward

psychological issues faced by many
Americans. While we should all
hope for calmness on campus,
that The Daily Tar Heel editorial
board would equate this tragedy
with possible outcomes of the
upcoming Student Body President
election indicates a complete lack
of perspective.

Term ‘manholes’ advances
a misogynistic culture
TO THE EDITOR:
I applaud the recent conversa-
tions regarding the preservation
of misogynistic culture through
words like “freshman” and “busi-
nessman.” One word has been
underrepresented in the conver-
sation: “manhole.”
Manholes are covered open-
ings that give access to the pub-
lic sewage systems under the
streets. Despite their ubiquitous
presence in everyone’s daily lives,
“man” is still part of their name,
and this misnomer encourages
the sexist culture we see in the
rest of our lives.
If you do not believe sexist
language promulgates homoge-
neous and sexist culture in this
case, consider the following:
the word “manhole” only holds
relevance to men. What young
girl dreams of being a sewage
pipe cleaner when she does not
feel comfortable crawling into a
manhole?
Unless we change something,
our sewage system will suffer,
and we will all feel the trickle-
down effect. After all, UNC’s
Bingham Research Facility has
leaked sewage in the past year.
I am not sure whether adding
the word “ladyhole” or simply
adopting the title “personhole”
would be more beneficial, but we
should act soon. In these trou-
bled times, we should encour-
age as many women and men as
possible to enter and clean our
manholes and ladyholes. I truly
believe this will make our lives,
our culture and our environment
better.
By promoting a more gen-
der-neutral sewage workforce,
we will more readily focus on
moving the subterranean crap
around, rather than getting rid
of it entirely.

Kvetching Board a needed
forum for a college paper
TO THE EDITOR:
As a forum of a college news-
paper, the kvetching board
should be a public space where
students can creatively voice
their opinions without adhering
to political correctness. Its users
do not hide behind anonymity,
as an e-mail address is required
to submit a kvetch, and unlike
a blog, such as the Feminist
Student United’s, the DTH does
not erase comments that it does
not agree with.
The right of students to put
the spotlight on certain ele-
ments of the campus should not
be labeled as oppressive without
examining the author’s intention
and background.
