Conveyor belt

The company ABB (Andersen and the Berntsen Brothers) intends to design a conveyor belt.
You shall design the control and the electric drive for this conveyor belt.

Due to the simpler control, a DC motor shall be used to drive the conveyor belt. The task you
have been given is to:

• Model the motor’s load and implement it in Simulink.

• Calculate the gear transmission ratio
• Choose a suitable DC motor in accordance with the given requirement specification
• Design the Power Processing Unit
• Design the drive’s control system
• Design a superior control system that controls start, stop, errors and so on
• Simulate the system in Simulink

Requirement specification:
• The conveyor belt shall be able to move in both directions and shall be able to brake in
both directions (4 quadrant operation)
• The control system shall be able to control a torque step at on and off loading
• The conveyor belt speed shall be v = ± 2m/s
• The conveyor belt shall be able to accelerate to maximum speed within 2 seconds

Load model:
• Maximum load: m = 2500 kg
• Inertia for each roller: Jroller = 45 kgm2
• Inertia for the gear referred to the motor shaft side: Jgear = 0.15 kgm2
• Conveyor belt length: L = 8 m
• System friction: Negligible

A Simulink library, called ”Matlab/Simulink library" (eea_lib.mdl) is available on "It's

Learning" under the "Projects" folder. This library contains blocks that can be used in the
project. Among other things, you will find a PI regulator and DC motor. The inputs and
outputs of the DC motor are real values. Within the motor model, per unit values are used.
Base values for voltage, current, torque and speed must therefore be given.

Please refer to separate attachment that gives a few clues to get you started.
