Creation Myths

A CREATION MYTH usually tells the story of how life, animals or the world was
brought into existence. The people who first developed these myths did not have
science to tell them how things were formed. They were not aware of the fact
that they lived on a planet, but were only knowledgeable about the places to which
they could travel and the things they could see and touch. Each culture had its
own creation myths and, originally, these stories, told to explain how life was
created, were spread orally and often became exaggerated as they were passed
on.

Creation myths made sense to the people who heard them because they had no
other stories or explanations to make them believe otherwise. These myths only
seem out of the ordinary and fictitious to us because we have discovered other
theories to prove that things were created differently. We know that the sun
rises and sets, that we live on one planet of several in a solar system and we are
aware of the rules and laws governing our world (e.g. gravity). To our society,
creation myths are wonderful stories, but we don’t believe in them the same way
that the ancient societies that invented them did.
