Mobile phone Functioning

The functioning of mobile phones is
radio waves transmission to and from
on the

j
station. The base station with antennas
mounted on either transmission tower

tops of buildings are located at appropriate
locations and heights to serve wide
areas. The
antennas position may vary from SO
feet in height.

When a person makes a cell phone call, a signal

ls sent from the mobile phone's antenna to the
nearest base station antenna. The base 1:

station responds to this signal

I

assigning it an available radiofrequency
channel. Radio frequency waves transfer the
information to the base station. The voice/data
signals are then sent to a switching center,
which transfers the call to its destination. The
voice signals are then relayed back and forth
during the call. In India mobile phones operate
I
in the frequency range of :

869 - 890 MHz (CDMA)

93s - 960 MHz (GSM900)
180s - 1880 MHz (GSM1800)
2110 - 2L7o MHz (3G)
Effects of radio wave exposure on hu'man
health
The Radio Frequency Radiation (RFR)
exposure from mobile phones may have
t possible thermal/non-thermal effects while
holding mobile phones close to the body. More
the use of mobile phone, higher will be the
temperature increase of ear lobes/other body
pafts.

Research focusing on mobile telephony
over the last 2 decades has shown no
conclusive / convincing evidence that the radio
signals from mobile phones cause adverse
health effects. The cause and the effect have
not yet been established. Hence we may have
to adopt precautionary measures to prevent
any il! effects.

Preca utiona ry M easu res

1) Don't use mobile while wearing' metal-
framed glasses or having wet hair as metal
& water are good conductot's of radio
WAVES.
*
2)
t.

Don't press the phone handset against
your head. Radiation level is proportiona!
.., to the square of the distance from the
i
source-being very close increase the
,. energy absorption much mqre. The farther
your brain is from the handset the better it
i j
is.

3) Don't carry mobile phone in a breast or I

pants pocket when it is on. When a mobile

phone is on, it automatically transmits at
high power every one or two minutes to
check (poll) the network.
4) Don't allow use of mobile phone for
longer time by children as a younger
person will likely have a longer lifetime
exposure to radiation from cell phones
i
I
5) Avoid useof mobile by people having
active medical implants and should
preferably keep the mobile phone at least
15 cm away from the imPlant.
6) Don't use the mobile when radio signal is
weak, as mobile phone will increase its
transmission power. Find a strong signal
and avoid movement. Use your Phone
where reception is good

rnobile phone first makes the
comrr'rur"lication at higher po\A/er and then I

reduces power to an adequate level. More

power is radiated during call connecting
time.
8) Use a headset (or ear bud) to keep the
headset farther from your head.

9) Read the manufacturer's instructions

carefully and follow "HOW TO SET"
I
instructions for your phone.

10) Avoid use of mobile phone closer to body

o Using text as compared to
voice
wherever possible
. Using a landline (wired) phone in place

11) While purchasing a Mobile Handset check
the SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) value
of the mobile phone. The mobile handsets
should comply with the SAR values of 1'6
W/kg averaged over l gram of human
tissue w.e.f. lst Sept. 2012. Check SAR
value of handset bY dialing x #07 #
12) Write the 15 digit IMEI (International
I
Mobile Equipment Identity) no.in a diary'
In case your mobile phone is lost, this
IMEI no will be asked at police station and
will be needed to track the phone. Check
IMEI number of handset by dialing x#06#
13) Activate automatic keypad locking system
on your mobile which can be unlocked
using password. This way unnecessary
keypressings can be avoided'
14) If you have lost your mobile phone, lodEe
complaint at your nearest police station.

15) Use mobile tracking feature to find your

lost mobile set. You need to set 2 mobile
