society has been huge in the social sciences, the arts and humanities, and public policy.
Time and again, The New School has made academic history, offering some of the first college
courses anywhere in subjects like film studies, psychoanalysis, urban studies, photography,
Black studies, women’s studies, and creative writing.
Hannah Arendt, W.E.B. DuBois, Martha Graham, Tennessee Williams, Berenice Abbott, and
Edward R. Murrow are only a few of the luminaries who have taught here. And the university’s
famous students and graduates include jazz musicians and economists, philosophers and fashion
designers, filmmakers and psychologists, city planners and poets.
“ In order to figure out a future plan of action for this project, I’m
starting to look at historical parallels involving other movements
and how they’ve grappled with similar issues. That’s why I focus on
history rather than on media studies—in order to get a broader scope
that gives my work a greater relevance.
“ There are a lot of resources available at Lang that you can access. It
requires persistence sometimes, but there are no closed doors here.
Lang/Parsons student and photographer Ida Benedetto has been
documenting the life of Guatemalan coffee farmers since 2004.
Thanks to a grant from The New School, she will be expanding her

project to include tea garden workers in India.

BA/BFA dual degree programs let you take advantage of Lang’s rich liberal arts education while
pursuing a creative discipline at Parsons The New School for Design or at The New School for
Jazz and Contemporary Music. In just five years, you can earn both a liberal arts degree and a
fine arts degree.

If you’re planning on graduate school, Lang offers you a range of accelerated BA/MA study options
so that you can jump-start your work toward a master’s degree in your junior year. If accepted, you

THE PLACE TO START SOMETHING Greenwich Village is the perfect place to walk around, stretch your legs, and get used to the fact that you are in one of the largest cities on the planet. While the
Village pulses with energy day and night in its music clubs, bookstores, performance spaces, theaters, and hundreds of restaurants and cafés, the neighborhood

with Italian families while taking
intensive summer language and

Valladolid, Yucatán, Mexico:
Students visit Mayan ruins and
other cultural sites, study Spanish
(instruction is offered at several
levels), and receive introductory
lessons in Yucatec Maya language.
Amsterdam, Netherlands:
Lang students study in the
Netherlands for a full semester
or academic year. Courses in the
humanities, the social sciences,
and a variety of other subjects
are taught in English.
Siem Reap, Cambodia: This
program integrates a course in
modern history with site visits.
Students observe the realities
of Cambodia’s tourism, garment
manufacturing, and human
trafficking industries and learn
basic Khmer. They also teach
conversational English to young
adults and interact through the
arts with children at an orphanage.
Edinburgh, Scotland: Students
study avant-garde theater and
attend selected performances at
the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Prior
theater experience is not required.
Berlin, Germany: This summer
session at Die Freie Universität
Berlin is an opportunity for
students to immerse themselves

Spelman College: Spelman
College is a historically Black
college in Atlanta, Georgia.
Exchanges are for one semester
and include community activism
internships through Spelman’s
Center for Leadership and
Civic Engagement.
Lang Alternative Spring Break
Program: Students study
education in New Orleans or
the history of the civil rights
movement. They then take a five-
day trip to New Orleans or other
southern cities, where they work
with community partners and
learn on-site about the issues
discussed in class.
Lang Internship Program
Lang strongly supports internships
as a bridge between students’
academic and career interests
and offers many resources to
facilitate internships for all
students. Interns typically receive
professional training, gain hands-
on experience, develop personal
confidence, and establish an
expansive network of contacts.
Lang students have recently
interned at MTV, HBO, Beth Israel
Hospital, the Village Voice, Sony
Entertainment, GMHC, Miramax
Films, and the ACLU.
Twice a year, we publish an
index of available positions,
which typically include jobs
in publishing, broadcasting,
performing arts, museums and
galleries, photography, education,
nonprofit organizations, public
relations, journalism, literary
journals, and research. Students
are also welcome to develop their
own ideas for internships.

The Office of Career Development
offers regular workshops on
career opportunities, résumé
writing, and job searching and
interviewing.
Many Lang graduates go to work
right after they graduate, often in
fields related to their internships.
They might join a think tank or
work for a radio station. They
might enter the Peace Corps or
Teach for America. Many of our
graduates create opportunities
for themselves by starting
their own companies
and organizations.
