THESIS/PROJECTS

1. Ph.D. Thesis: Modeling Delaminations in Smart Laminated Structures

Supervisor: Prof. Santosh Kapuria, Professor, Department of Applied Mechanics, Indian
Institute of Technology Delhi.
Description: An efficient and accurate FE model is developed to analyze smart
piezolaminated shell structures featuring delamination and actuator debonding for the static
response, free vibration response and active vibration control. A four-node facet shell
element is developed based on the efficient third order zigzag theory to model
piezolaminated shells of general shapes (cylindrical shell, spherical shell, hyperbolic
paraboloid). Improved Discrete Kirchhoff constraint (IDKQ) technique is employed to
circumvent the need of C1-continuity of deflection variable. The computer program is
written in FORTRAN 95 for which the input for meshing of the structure is created using
a MATLAB code. For validation 3D FE results are obtained using ABAQUS. The
benchmark tests were performed to test the element in complex stress/strain conditions and
are shown to outperform the available shell elements. A novel method is also proposed to
satisfy continuity conditions at the location on delamination and/or debonding for
laminated shells. Effect of delamination and/or debonding on the active vibration control
of smart piezolaminated shells is also studied which was hitherto not available in literature.

2. M.Tech Thesis: Free vibration of variable stiffness composite laminates with curvilinear
fibres

Supervisor: Prof. K.K. Shukla, Professor, Department of Applied Mechanics, Motilal

Nehru National Institute of Technology Allahabad, Prayagraj, India.
Description: In this study vibration behavior of variable stiffness composite laminated
plates (VSCL) is analyzed for different profiles of the fibers. The formulation is based on
first order shear deformation theory. A p-version finite element with hierarchic basis
functions is used for the solution. The computer program is written in MATLAB. The
natural frequencies and mode shapes of different VSCL plates are computed and compared
with that of constant stiffness laminates. Increased or decreased frequencies of vibration is
observed by changing fiber orientations and profiles as compared to traditional laminates
which can be useful in particular purposes. It was verified that both in thin and moderately
thick plates, the frequencies and mode shapes change with the diverse fiber orientation
variations. For the desired behavior of the laminated plate, fiber profiles can be chosen
accordingly. Increased or decreased values of fundamental frequencies are achievable
varying the fiber orientation in a sense in which the angle with the axis along the length is
kept minimum to increase values of frequencies and kept maximum to decrease the same.

3. B.Tech Project: Design and Development of a Four-Fingered Robotic Gripper.

Supervisor: Prof. Mohd. Suhaib, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering,

Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi,
India.
Description:. A four-fingered robotic gripper is developed and fabricated using a simple
mechanism for grasping irregular shaped objects. Simple linkage actuation mechanism is
employed. A DC motor is used to actuate the fingers of the gripper, using bevel gears and
threaded shaft arrangement. The gripper can perform the basic function of picking, holding

2
and grasping of irregularly shaped objects weighing up to 15 kgf. A CAD model is
developed using CATIA. The stresses developed in various parts of the gripper are
analyzed using ANSYS.
