Optative sentence

Rule-1: Inverted comma উঠিয়ে দিয়ে that বসাতে হয় +reporting verb উঠিয়ে wish/pray হয় +reported speech-এর
কর্ত ার পরে may/might হয় +অন্যান্য নিয়ম assertive sentence-এর ন্যায় হবে।যেমন: a. Father said to me, ‘May you be
happy’. Answer : Father wished that I might be happy.

b. Mother said to me, ‘May Allah bless you”. Answer : Mother prayed that Allah might bless me.

c. The girl said, ‘Oh! May I have the wings of a bird!’. Answer : The girl wished that she might have the
wings of a bird.

d. He said, ‘Long live our President’.

Answer : He prayed that our President might live long. e. The woman said, ‘Long live the King’. Answer :
The woman prayed that the King might live long.

c. The mother said to her son, ‘May you succeed in the examination.’ d. The teacher said to the student,
‘May you stand first in the examination.’

Optative Sentence

We use ‘wish’ or ‘pray’ in the Optative Sentence in the place of ‘said to’ or ‘said’.

My grandfather said, “May you live long.”

My grandfather wished that I might live long. 

The teacher said to the boy, “God bless you.” (Optative Sentence without  May)

The teacher prayed for the boy that God might bless him.

He said, “Would that I were here.”

He wished that he had been there.

They said,” O that! We had won the match.”

They wished that they had won the match.


Note:  “Would that” and “O that” are removed in the Indirect Speech.
Optative Sentence

The structure of indirect speech of Optative sentences.

a. The Reporting verb is changed into wish or pray.

b. The Optative form is changed into a statement.

c. ‘That’ is used as a linking word.

He said to me, "May you be happy".

He wished that I might be happy.

Mr. Khan said, "May Allah save me".

Mr. Khan prayed that Allah might save him.

Narration of Optative Sentence

1. Reporting verb is changed into wish, pray, desire, long for, yearn for etc. Moreover, the operative
form is changed into assertive form with the linker that in the indirect speech.
Example- 

Direct: They said, “May God save our country.”


Indirect: They prayed that God might save their country.

Optative Sentences

Those sentences, which express hope, prayer, or wish, are called optative sentences. Usually, there is a
mark of exclamation at the end of optative sentence. For example:

 May you succeed in the test!

 May you get well soon!

 Would that I were rich!

To change optative sentences into indirect speech, follow the following rules along with the above-
mentioned rules:

 In case, the reported speech starts with the word may, then the reporting verb said is replaced
with the word prayed.

 In case, the reported speech starts with the word would, then the reporting verb said is replaced
with the word wished.

 May is changed in might.


 Mark of exclamation is omitted.

 In indirect speech, the optative sentences become assertive sentences.

Examples

Direct Speech Indirect Speech

He said to me, “May you live long!” He prayed that I might live long.

My mother said to me, “May you My mother prayed that I might succeed

She said, “Would that I were rich!” She wished she had been rich.

I said to him, “Would that you were here

Optative Sentence:

Reporting verb-এর পরিবর্তে wish or pray বসে + Inverted comma উঠে গিয়ে that বসে + Reported speech -এর
subject বসে + may/might + Reported speech -এর মূল verb থেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত বসে।

Direct: Father said to me, “May you pass the examination.”

Indirect: Father prayed that i might pass the examination.

Direct: The teacher said to the student, “May Allah blesses you.”

Indirect: The teacher wished that Allah might bless the student.

Optative sentence

Optative sentence কে Direct থেকে Indirect করার সময় যা যা করনীয়ঃ


1.  Said এর পরিবর্তে  Prayed/wished  [to থাকলে উঠে যাবে।] [Allah বা God থাকলে prayed না
থাকলে wished]

2. Inverted comma উঠে গিয়ে Conjunction that বসে।

3. Conjunction এর পর subject + might+ verb + ext.

4. Person ও tense পরিবর্ত ন করতে হয়।


**Teacher said to me, “May Allah save you.”
=The teacher wished that Allah might save me.
Object বসাতে হলে for লিখে object নিতে হয়। নতুবা object তুলে দিতে হয়। Subject এর পর might বসে।
** Father said to me, “May you gain success in life.”
=Father wished me that I might gain success in life.
** He said, “Long live our president.”
=He wished that their president might live long.
Long দ্বারা বাক্য শুরু হলে long বাক্যের শেষে বসে।
