Italy is the hardest hit country in Europe with more than 35,000 cases. The death toll has
surged1 again in the last 24 hours by 475 – the biggest increase in a single day. Almost three
thousand people have now died2.
In Spain the outbreak continues3 to spread fast and is now infecting4 care homes. There are
now almost fourteen thousand confirmed cases - with over 600 deaths. All hotels will close in
Spain by next Tuesday and the Foreign Office has urged 5British holidaymakers to return home
before then.
In Germany - there have been6 over 12,000 cases and 28 deaths. Tonight Chancellor Angela
Merkel has given7 an unprecedented televised address describing the disease as the country's
greatest challenge since the Second World War.
President Trump says the United States and Canada have agreed8 to close their border to non-
essential traffic -- as all fifty American states registered cases of coronavirus for the first time.
Trump also said that he was sending a US Navy hospital ship to New York - the city worst hit
by the outbreak.
1 znacznie wzrosła, mimo iż wzrost dotyczy ostatnich 24 godzin (czyli zamknięta przeszłość),
jest to informacja istotna TERAZ. Takie zastosowanie Present Perfect jest typowe dla
czynności, które są skończone ale tłumaczą obecny stan, np. I have eaten too much and now
I feel sick.

teraźniejszym.
3 czasownik to continue jest tu użyty w Present Simple, żeby pokazać że jest to stan obecny,
bez odnoszenia się że epidemia zaczęła się niedawno i kontynuuje się do tej pory. Użycie
Present Perfect lub Continuous też byłoby poprawne, zastosowana w tym zdaniu konstrukcja
jest kwestią interpretacji mówiącego.

Perfect sugeruje że sugestia jest ciągle aktualna i nadal należy się do niej stosować.
6 liczba przypadków zarejestrowana do tej pory, użycie Present Perfect sugeruje że sytuacja
obowiązują lub wydarzyły się niedawno. Z perspektywy tego reportażu, Merkel powiedziała
to tego samego dnia, w którym reportaż się ukazał.
