MAKBase Qualities
• Viscosity Index – Has a high viscosity index, which means lesser thinning at higher temperature & lesser thickening at
lower temperatures.

• Sulphur-Nitrogen – The severe Hydro processing route ensure that the amount of these is reduced to PPM level.

• Acidity/Alkalinity – Has no acidity or alkalinity, neither organic nor inorganic.

• Aromatics, Aniline point –With extremely low aromatic content, the oil is highly saturated which is indicated by its high
aniline point.

• Oxidation Stability –Has a highly stabilized structure & the absence of impurities like aromatics, Sulphur, etc. indicates
these oils have very high thermal & oxidation stability effectively demonstrated by different tests like RBOT, IP48, etc.

• Volatility –These oils have very low volatility, which is indicated by their low Noack values.

• Pour point, Cloud point – Has excellent low temperature properties & thus has a very low cloud point & pour point.

• Appearance – Indicative of its purity, it is clear, bright & water-white.

• Copper corrosion – These oils are highly stable & neutral, indicated by the resistance shown to copper corrosion.

• Carbon Residue – When burned in insufficient air, it leaves negligible amounts of carbon residue.

• Demulsibility –Indicates excellent water separation characteristics as well as low water solubility due to the absence of
polar elements.

• Foaming – The foaming & the air release values are superior & are the best in class.

• Low temperature Properties – Excellent low temperature properties also result in low temperature fluidity & viscosity.

• Ash, Sulphated Ash – With almost no ash, it reduces emissions & is suitable for many applications.

• Distillation range – The Hydro finishing process & the multiple distillation ensure that the distillation ranges are sharp.

• Additive response – Has superior additive response thus enhancing its properties.

Base Oil: Conventional Manufacturing Process

The conventional process, used to make Group I base oils, is a solvent refining process, which is subtractive in nature, with
no change in the molecular structure of the hydrocarbons.

Solvent Refining Additives / Synthetic

Components

ATM Vacuum Solvent Solvent Hydrogen Lube LUBE

Residue Distillation Extraction Dewaxing Finishing Blending OILS

De-Asphalting Extract Wax

This base oils still have a higher portion of unstable aromatics, unsatisfactory Viscosity Index & low temperature properties,
as well as poorer performance.

66

108
MAKBase : Manufacturing Process
BPCL uses the state of art Hydro processing technology, sourced from Chevron Lummus Global LLC (CLG) to manufacture
MAKBase.
This all-Hydro processing technology route is severe & transformational & not just subtractive as it selectively concentrates
& isomerizes the molecular structure of wax into desirable isoparaffins.

Hydro Processing Route Additives / Synthetic

Components

ATM Vacuum Lube Catalytic/ Hydrogen Lube LUBE

Hydro Isomerisation
Residue Distillation Cracker Dewaxing Finishing Blending OILS

These isoparaffins have high VI, low pour points, & excellent resistance to oxidation. Further, because Catalytic De-waxing
preserves the base oil’s paraffinicity, it can produce higher product VI &/or higher yields than other de-waxing processes.
The process can produce base oils with Viscosity Index ranging from 95 to 130 & higher touching the Group III class in
performance.

AUTO LPG
Auto LPG is the fuel for use in passenger & commercial vehicles. Petrol Engines can be retrofitted with a specialized kit to run
the engine either on Petrol or on Auto LPG without doing any modification in the engine. However diesel engines can’t be
retrofitted with auto LPG Kit, a separate engine, which runs on Auto LPG, has to be placed in place of Diesel Engines and
these engines will run only on Auto LPG.
Use of Auto LPG in the automobile vehicles will reduce the exhaust emission of these engines.

DIESEL FUELS
A variety of Diesel fuels are being marketed by Bharat Petroleum Corporation keeping in mind the various end use
application / Pollution control / ambient temperature conditions. The various grades marketed are given below:
HSD
Bharat Petroleum markets two regular grades of HSD (High Speed Diesel) in the country through its Retail Outlets based on
the sulphur content, Cetane Number and other parameters.
• HSD meeting Bharat Stage II requirements having sulphur content of 500 ppm and Cetane Number of 48 is marketed
throughout country except in the notified areas where Bharat Stage III fuels are marketed.
• HSD meeting Bharat Stage III requirements having sulphur content of 350 ppm, is marketed through out the country
except in notified area where Bharat stage IV fuels are marketed and HSD meeting Bharat Stage IV requirement having
sulphur content of 50 ppm is only marketed in notified ares. The low sulphur fuel helps in controlling the emission levels
from the vehicles.
Both the grades of HSD are used as fuel in medium and high speed compression ignition engines (operating above 750
rpm) fitted in passenger car, commercial vehicles, stationary diesel engines, locomotives and pump sets.
Bharat Petroleum also markets high Flash HSD for Marine applications.
BOTH THE GRADES OF HSD CONFORMS TO IS 1460:2005 FOR HSD

RESIDUAL FUEL FOR DG SET APPLICATION
Currently, Bharat Petroleum is not marketing a separate Residual Fuel for DG Set application. However, the Furnace Oil/
LSHS marketed by BPCL found to meet the requirement of DG set application and these fuels are used extensively in big
marine DG set as fuel.
Residual fuels like Furnace Oil & LSHS are used as fuel in large Marine Diesel Engines for Electricity Generation in
Independent Power Projects (IPPS), Industrial units and in marine application. These fuels are also used in propulsion
Engines in ships. The operating cost of these Generating units are very low compared to the Diesel Engines running on
HSD / LDO nad hence many new DG sets running on Residual fuel oil are being installed in the country. The use of these
fuels in Marine engines put additional demand on the residual fuel oil compared to the residual fuel used in burning
application in Boiler / Furnace.
A new specification is under preparation by BIS taking into account the demands of the consumers, engine builders & fuel
supplier. Once the new specification is published, the following specification will become obsolete.

LOW SULPHUR HEAVY STOCK (LSHS) / HEAVY PETROLEUM STOCK (HPS)
LSHS & HPS are residual fuels produced after processing of indigenous crudes, These have high pour points and require
special handling arrangements. These can be used in lieu of FO in the same applications where furnace oil is suitable. LSHS
has additional advantage of having low sulphur content, and high calorific value.
These products are having pour point generally higher than the ambient temperature and hence need specially designed oil
handling systems such as steam traced or electrically traced storage tanks, pipelines, pumps & filters.

LUBRICANT STORAGE
& HANDLING

135
LUBRICANTS STORAGE & HANDLING
Our lubricating oils & greases are the result of considerable research work & after careful manufacture & delivery, are as good
for their intended use as we can make them. However, during storage it is important to guard against contamination which
can drastically reduce the performance & life of a lubricant. Numerous studies have shown that both water & dirt can lessen
the life of bearings& other components. Preventing contamination during storage has a direct pay-back in terms of optimum
lubricant performance, longer lubricant life & reduced maintenance costs.
INDOOR STORAGE
Preferably lubricants should be stored inside. However, even then there are certain precautions that should be followed.
• The temperature of the storage area should remain moderate & not subjected to wide fluctuations.
• The storage area should be located away from industrial contamination, such as fumes or dust.
• The storage area & dispensing equipment should be clean & be part of a regular cleaning schedule.
• Labels, stencils, markings on containers & dispensing equipment should be kept legible to avoid cross –contamination or
incorrect application.
• Detergent containing engine oil, hydraulic oils, turbine oils & extreme pressure (EP) oils should use separate dispensing
equipment.
OUTDOOR STORAGE
If outside storage is unavoidable, then the following precautions should be followed :
• Ensure that the bungs on drums are screwed in tight. Store drums horizontally, with bungs below the oil level
(i.e. at 3 o’clock & 9 o’clock). This prevents the seals from drying out & tending to leak. For the same reason, drums
stored upright on pallets should stand upside down.
• Drums stored on their sides should be clear of the ground & preferably rest on wooden or steel beams. They may be
stacked three high if wedged properly to prevent movement.
• Do not store drums on end with bungs on top. Rain water collects on the drum head & is drawn into the oil when drum
breathes during temperature cycles. If drums must be stored this way, they should be tilted first by standing on edge (say
on a 2” X 4” piece of lumber). When oil is drawn from the drum, the head should b e wooed clean first.
• Drums preferably should be covered with a tarpaulin to protect them from the elements.
• To minimize contamination & the effects of weathering, time spent in outdoor storage should be kept to minimum.
• Outdoor storage location should be away from dusty areas such as quarries or unpaved roads. Opening drums in such
conditions will contaminate the contents.
• Smaller package sizes (e.g. pails) should be covered, examined regularly & kept to a minimum to provide a quick turnover.
HANDLING
Lubricating oils & greases are a relatively harmless class of material. Nevertheless, care should be taken to avoid skin
contact & inhalation of oil mists. BPCL provides Material safety data sheets (MSDS) on all of its products & these are
available from your Marketing Executive/Assistant Manager (Marketing).
Some general guidelines for handling lubricating oils & greases follow :
• Use protective equipment to avoid skin contact.
• Quickly remove any product that does get on the skin.
• Do not use gasoline, kerosene or similar solvents to remove lubricants from the skin as they take the natural oils from the
skin and cause dryness.
• Use only mild soap & warm water or a recommended hand cleaner to remove lubricating oil & grease from the skin. Dry
using clean hand towels.
• Wash hands & arms at the end of the working day and before eating.
• Remove any contaminated clothing & clean thoroughly before re-use.
• Avoid breathing in oil mists.
• Clean-up lubricating oil & grease spills immediately & dispose of them according to environmental guidelines.
• Obtain medical advice concerning any potential health problems.

PRODUCT SHELF LIFE : LUBRICATING OILS

The performance of lubricating oil will remain satisfactory for several years, provided it has been in protected storage & not
exposed to wide extremes of temperature. Generally, the simpler the oil formulation the longer the oil will last on the shelf.
• Process & Base Oils
These may be stored indefinitely under protected conditions without any significant deterioration in performance. Slight
changes in appearance or colour may occur.

90

136
• Hydraulic Oils, Compressor Oils, Turbine Oils & General Purpose Lubricating Oils
These oils contain low, but very effective, additive treatments. They may be stored for five years under protected
conditions without any significant deterioration in performance.
• Engine/Motor Oils & Transmission Fluids
Although these materials contain high additive contents, they are extremely stable. They may be stored for five years under
protected conditions without any significant deterioration in performance. However, industry performance standards for
engine oils & transmission fluids are changing rapidly. Hence, an engine oil or a transmission fluid that has been stored
for five years or longer, while it may still meet its original performance specifications, may not meet the latest industry
requirements.
• Automotive & Industrial Gear Oils
These oil formulations can sometime result in some long term instability. Under protected storage conditions, they should
be stored for three years only. In addition, automotive gear oil specifications are subject to change, so ‘old’ product should
be checked to ensure that it still meets current standards.
• Metal working Oils & Way Lubricants
These formulations are often quite delicately balanced, especially the Soluble Cutting Oils (mixed with water to form an
emulsion). Hence, under protected conditions, they should be stored for no longer than two years.
Storage instability in lubricating oils is usually detected by :
• Settling out of additives as a gel or heavy sticky liquid.
• Floc or haze
• Precipitates or solid material
• Change in colour
Storage under unprotected conditions can result in water absorption, which may cause the oil to become “milky” or form a
“mayonnaise”. This may also cause rust in metal containers.

91

137
Right Sampling Procedure
• To check machine’s health, oil analysis is an important tool

• Oil sampling is first and the most important step towards oil analysis

• Wrong oil sampling can infer wrong results about the status of the machine

• For correct oil sampling below are given steps be followed:

a) Flush the pipe by draining about one litre into a different container

b) Place the sample container beneath the sampling valve

c) Take sample from running system and not from stagnant machine

d) Take sample between pump and filter and not after the oil has passed filter

e) Take sample from near the suction line and not from the portion near the return line (dead zone), as oil will be stagnant
in this zone.
