Gay intern credited with saving Giffords

‘I heard gunshots, I ran toward
where the congresswoman would be’
By CHRIS JOHNSON

For Danny Hernandez, the shootings on Saturday in Tucson, Ariz.,

that critically wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) were a life-
changing moment during which many say he demonstrated unparal-
leled heroism.
Hernandez, who’s gay and had worked as an intern for Giffords for
just five days at the time of the shooting, is credited with providing the
first aid that saved her life.
In an interview with the Washington Blade, Hernandez, 20, a politi-
cal science student at the University of Arizona, said he was tasked
with signing in visitors at the “Congress on Your Corner” event when
the shooting began.
“About 10 minutes after the event started, I heard gunshots,” he
said. “I heard someone say ‘gun!’ I ran toward where the congress-
woman would be.”
Giffords, who was shot in the forehead, was among the 20 people
shot by 22-year-old gunman Jared Loughlin, who used a semi-auto-
matic pistol with an extended magazine during his attack. Six people
were killed, including five who died at the scene and a 9-year-old girl
who died at the hospital.

Gay sex remains a crime

‘Don’t Ask’ repeal leaves sodomy ban unchanged in military

PAGE 20 Much of the nation was riveted over the drama surrounding the congressional vote last month to
repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law barring gays from serving openly in the military.
But in a little noticed development, Capitol Hill observers say Congress is in no mood to take a
follow-up action recommended by Pentagon officials — the repeal of a longstanding military law that
classifies consensual sodomy among both gay and straight service members as a crime.
Gay rights attorneys and experts in military law say the sodomy law provision known as Article 125
of the Uniform Code of Military Justice has been rarely enforced in recent years in cases where sexual
activity has been consensual and “fraternization” between officers and lower ranking members has
not be a factor.
And the experts say a 2004 decision known as U.S. v. Marcum by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the
Armed Services placed limits on the enforcement of Article 125 based on a U.S. Supreme Court deci-
socialagenda sion one year earlier that declared state sodomy laws unconstitutional.

Customer reports armed robbery at Omega bar
A 39-year-old D.C. man reported being robbed by a male suspect with a handgun in the bathroom at the
Dupont Circle gay bar Omega on Jan. 3, according to a police report, which says the victim was not injured.
The report, prepared by Second District police officers, says the incident took place about 8:45 p.m. after
the victim reported playing pool at the bar with three people now listed as suspects in the case. The report says
a witness told police the victim joined the three men at the bar and bought them drinks shortly after playing
pool with them.
“C1 [Complainant 1] went to the men’s restroom, at which time S1 [Suspect 1] entered into the men’s rest-
room, approached C1 from behind, and held a dark colored handgun to the right of C1’s waistband,” the police
report says. “S1 then stated, ‘give it up,’ at which time C1 gave S1 his wallet containing the above listed items,”
the report says.
According to the report, the victim, who asked the Blade not to disclose his name, told police the suspect
took at least $400 in cash, a North Face jacket worth $450, his Maryland driver’s license, and his cell phone.
The victim told the Blade in a phone interview that the suspect also took his iPod.
Omega manager Perry Morehouse said the bar is cooperating fully in the investigation into the incident and
has offered to provide police with a security surveillance video that shows the suspects and the victim inside
the bar. Morehouse said that as of Wednesday morning, police had not come to the bar to pick up a disc with
a copy of the video surveillance that the bar made for them.
Assistant Police Chief Peter Newsham told the Blade in an e-mail that Second District detectives made
several “unsuccessful” attempts to obtain the video. But Morehouse said employees are present in the bar
from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. every day and no one from the police department came to obtain the video as of early
Wednesday.
The police report describes suspect one as a black male between 25 and 30 years old, about 5 feet, 10
inches tall, weighing between 150 and 170 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair in a pony tail, having a
dark complexion and medium build and wearing a black jacket and blue pants. Suspect two is described as a
black male about 25 years old, about 6 feet tall, weighing about 165 pounds, with brown eyes and long black
hair, having a medium build and wearing a gray jacket and gray pants.
Suspect three is described in the report as being of “unknown” race and gender, appearing between 25 and
30 years old, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 195 to 200 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes, having
a dark complexion and having a “heavy/fat/stocky” build. The suspect wore a black jacket and blue pants, the
report says. The victim told the Blade the third suspect was a drag queen.
Anyone with information about the incident should contact the Second District detective’s office at

It’s back for another year — Mid-Atlantic Leather Weekend.

Once again, Washington this weekend becomes a fantasy scene of leather
chaps and cigars, slave collars and chains — with hankie-flagging people seek-
ing the endorphin rush of erotic heat as they cruise hotel lobbies and prowl
upstairs corridors for private play parties or hunt exotic thrills at
live demos of kink at the Code party. But it’s also the chance
to meet old friends and make new ones within the special
brotherhood (and sisterhood) of the men and women
who embrace leather.
And this year’s gathering happening this weekend,
this time at a new hotel, promises once again, ac-
cording to the sponsoring organization, the Cen-
taur Motorcycle Club of D.C., on its website, to be
“one of the hottest leather/fetish events in North
America and the world’s largest leather club run.”
“Thousands of leathermen, gearheads, kink-
sters, rubber freaks and even curious novices
from all over the world,” says the promo material,
will “come to the nation’s capitol for a week-
end of hot, horny fun.”
“We’re literally looking for thousands of
people to come for the weekend,” says a
confident Larry Barat, the Centaur M.C. pro-
motions chair for the weekend. About 600 or
700 people are expected to register for the
full, three-day package, he says, “but we an-
ticipate 2,000 or 3,000 or possibly more to par-
ticipate in side events organized around the week-
end and at the bars,” especially, he said, at the D.C.
Eagle and Green Lantern.
The three-day package is $180 in advance or $200
at the door, a package including access to all events
and exhibits, says Barat, who also pointed
out that “an important new change for

ARTSINBRIEF
Phillips Collection reopens after serious fire
After its disastrous fire Sept. 2, this weekend is the welcome-back celebration/
grand reopening of the newly renovated Phillips House, a museum since Duncan
Phillips opened its doors in 1921 as America’s first museum of modern art. It’s full
of his collection of works by Renoir and Monet, van Gogh and Degas, Picasso and
Klee, and more.
The fire was restricted to the roof and a suite of offices directly under it, and the
famed art was not harmed, but there was extensive water damage to 12 galleries
inside the 1897 building, at 1600 21st St. N.W., in Dupont Circle near 21st and Q.
Now everything is back in place as the museum kicks off its 90th anniversary year
under the banner of “90 Years of New,” beginning with this weekend’s reopening when
the regular $12 admission charges are waived and complimentary champagne will be
uncorked. The museum is open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from
11 a.m. to 6 p.m. A host of programs, installations, films and more are promised.
The year’s celebration culminates on Nov. 5 with the 90th-anniversary “birthday
bash.” More details at phillipscollection.org.

A “Remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” sponsored by the GLBT Arts
Consortium with the Capitol Hills Arts Workshop will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the
Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church, 4th and Independence Avenue, S.E.
Participants include the Rock Creek Singers of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Wash-
ington (GMCW); light jazz, pop and folk music from Not What You Think, a 12-per-
son ensemble from the Lesbian and Gay Chorus of Washington; and Fortissima,
D.C.’s feminist chorus open to “sopranos and altos of all genders,” known as the
Bread and Roses Feminist Singers until 2009. Youth will also talk and sing, from the

thyism, according to Blake Cornish, who plays Henry Drummond, the character
loosely based on civil liberties lawyer Clarence Darrow who battled but lost in the
Tennessee courtroom against three-time presidential candidate and religious fun-
damentalist William Jennings Bryan.
Cornish, who has sung with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington and is a former
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force attorney, says the play is relevant in 2011 be-
cause it “explores issues around the relationship between religious teachings and
secular law, and pertains to LGBT equality in lots of different ways, when people use
religious beliefs in ways that many in gay community would find to justify bigotry.”
