An online assessment that:


•  Simulates the experience of a classroom
walkthrough
•  Provides feedback on instructional leaders skill in
identifying characteristics of high-quality teaching
and learning.
•  Provides some data to consider in support of
developing instructional expertise.

•  Was developed by researchers in the Center for
Educational Leadership and the College of
Education at the University of Washington, Seattle

Our Goal
•  To have everyone in this program take the 5D
assessment (online) within the next 7 days.
•  Please plan to complete the assessment no later
than midnight on [fill in the last date of the
assessment window for this group]

Purpose
•  To gain information about what you, as instructional
leaders, notice and think about when watching
classroom practice.
•  To calibrate a vision for high-quality instruction.
•  To leverage your instructional strengths and to
identify targets for growth.

How to do it
Before you leave this session, please use the sign-up
sheets [describe where the sign-up sheets are located] to
choose which video of classroom instruction you prefer to
watch for the assessment. Select one:
–  Elementary Literacy
–  Secondary Literacy
–  Elementary Math
–  Secondary Math
If you do not choose a video, your assessment will include
the elementary literacy video.

How to do it (continued)
Tomorrow morning, you will receive an email from
edlead@u.washington.edu with the subject heading:
5D Assessment Notification.
Please set aside about an hour during the upcoming
week – either here, at your workplace, or at home – to
follow a link in the email which will take you to the
assessment.

Assessment Process
After logging on you will:
•  Read the Participant Agreement
•  Run a one-minute test video
•  Complete a short demographic survey
(approximately 5 minutes)
•  Watch a 15-20 minute video of classroom
instruction. Have paper and a pen or pencil on
hand to take notes.

Answer three questions:*
‒  What do you notice about teaching and learning in this
classroom?

‒  What conversation would you want to have with this


teacher?

‒  How, if at all, does this inform your thinking about and


planning for professional development?

*These questions will be included in the on-line assessment, both


before and after you watch the video of classroom instruction.

When you are satisfied with your answer, you may
keep a record of it for yourself by copying and pasting
it into a Word document before you click the Submit
button to complete your assessment.

Please note: Your score will not be affected by misspellings or


incorrect grammar.

Results
Each assessment will be evaluated:
•  By two specially-trained instructional leaders who
will calibrate ratings (with inter-rater reliability of
90%).
•  Using a comprehensive instructional rubric
developed by researchers at the University of
Washington in collaboration with Project
Directors at the Center for Educational
Leadership.

The coordinator for your program will provide you with
additional information regarding how and when you will
receive assessment results.
You will also learn how this data may be utilized in
support of your program s instructional goals.

Support (continued)
If you plan to take the assessment before or after
CEL s office hours, you may wish to start the
assessment earlier so that you can contact CEL
Support during office hours, if necessary:
• Proceed through the assessment until the test video has
played through. If your computer plays the video
successfully, you may log off and log back into the exam at
a later time.
• Be sure to keep a record of your username and
password.

Technical Considerations
The computer on which you take the assessment must
meet the following technical specifications:
