MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP
MANUAL

The internship is partial fulfillment of the requirements for the

Masters’ of Business Administration (MBA)
Kathmandu University School of Management
Management Internship Program

Overview
Kathmandu University School of Management offers Management Internship (PWM 703) to students pursuing MBA sixth
term. This is a fourteen week program designed to provide students an opportunity for a meaningful career-related
experience in real organizational settings before they graduate. Students will practice and expand upon their knowledge
and skills learned in the classroom in a substantive work situation. Internships are a great way to learn; and sometimes
earn! Students earn credit and increased marketability for the permanent job search while learning more about a specific
field and applying classroom knowledge in a corporate environment. Companies benefit by saving on recruiting expenses
and having the opportunity to evaluate student interns for full-time openings.
The prospective intern, employer, and KUSOM Internship Coordinator will identify and design internship program, while
the latter two will facilitate and evaluate the work output of the intern. Internship coordinator will help students identify
internship opportunities, but it is the student’s responsibility to find the internship.
Students are allowed to register for the Internship for three credits. The student must work six days a week for ten to
fourteen weeks in an organization.

Objectives
Both students and sponsoring organizations should benefit from the internship program.
Companies and organizations gain through:

1. Gaining input of fresh, innovative ideas and skills of the new-graduates-to-be.

2. Acquiring additional skilled workforce at critical times or for value-adding projects.
3. Recruiting possibility of top students who will already have a good knowledge of the organization upon graduation.
4. Developing relations with the academia – for example with the opportunity to provide feedback to the university
about the knowledge and skills required by new graduates.

Students gain through:

1. Acquiring experience in a real life working environment.
2. Problem solving skill through investigating problems and development of system / strategy/ product.
3. Having the chance to try out own abilities without permanent commitment.
4. Obtaining an opportunity to increase level of maturity and grasp of business culture.
5. Developing specific, vocational and personal skills.
6. Getting an opportunity to work on a managerial project to solve an existing organizational problem and improve the
existing system.
7. Enhancing skills and knowledge as well as career prospects.
8. Establishing useful contacts.
9. Getting opportunities to travel, earn a salary (if offered by the company), and enjoy a different way of living.
Application Procedures
The student will:

• Meet with the KUSOM Internship Coordinator to discuss the internship and learning outcomes.

• Fill in the required forms and submit them signed.

Student Responsibilities
KUSOM’s internship program gives students opportunities and requires them to fulfill responsibilities. They gain
experience, apply skills acquired in the School, and make business contacts. Students are expected to seize opportunities to
maximize the internship's learning potential.
In addition, as envoys of their school, students must act professionally. This means always being punctual, performing
work effectively and efficiently, and behaving in a way that demonstrates ability and interest in the sponsoring company's
work. Students must realize that their performance reflects on the KUSOM and may affect internship opportunities for
future students.
The student will:
 Obtain approval of the proposed internship
• Register properly
• Identify appropriate organization and position for internship
• Prepare a resume for the prospective employer
• Complete and submit the Internship Agreement Form
• Get approval for Internship project
 Comply with the employer’s rules and regulations

from the KUSOM Internship Coordinator and Work Supervisor.
 Complete and submit internship report with specified deadline, fulfilling necessary requirements.

 Immediately notify the KUSOM Internship Coordinator, if any difficulties are experienced with the internship
site, employer, or work assignments.
The student must approach this experience with maturity and a commitment to excellence, knowing his/ her ethical
responsibilities.

KUSOM’s Responsibilities
KUSOM’s responsibility is to assist students in the process of finding suitable internship opportunities and ensure that
students are placed in a safe and stimulating working environment. The school may arrange company presentations and
interviews on campus if required. However, the school does not allocate students to particular internship opportunity. An
internship coordinator will be appointed and this involves assessing and approving students’ learning contracts and
portfolios as well as appraising all progress review reports. The internship coordinator guides the organization

in the assessment criteria used by the university and is available to give support to students from distance via
telephone, fax or e-mail.

KUSOM Internship Coordinator Responsibilities

• Schedule a personal visit whenever possible or a telephone conference with the Work Supervisor to review goals
and methods, identify the student's strengths and areas for improvement, and evaluate his/her progress. This meeting
should occur whenever needed but usually is scheduled at least once near the middle of the Internship experience.
• Ensure that the internship program satisfies KUSOM’s academic expectations.
• Coordinate to evaluate the student's assignments and the supervisor's evaluation of the student's work
performance.
• Ensure each intern is assigned suitable faculty for supervision on project undertaken by the intern.
• Coordinate with other faculty members to determine student’s work progress on the project and submit the
progress report to the Dean’s Office.
To promote a mutually beneficial relationship, the Intern, KUSOM Internship Coordinator, and Work Supervisor should
maintain close contact throughout the term. If questions or concerns arise, the supervisor is urged to communicate with the
internship coordinator. Such contact is welcomed and appreciated.

Employer Responsibilities
As the most important person the student will contact during his/her internship, the Work Supervisor will make several
important decisions during the experience. Consequently, both the Intern and the KUSOM Internship Coordinator must
have a good working relationship with the Work Supervisor.
The Intern will assume both an employee and a student role simultaneously. As an employee, the intern must perform
assigned duties satisfactorily. All company regulations, privacy and confidentiality, health and safety conditions, and legal
requirements apply, and any company policy violations should be handled in the usual way. Also as a KUSOM student, the
intern is subject to all applicable university regulations and KUSOM Participant Code of Conduct.
Though we have tried to minimize employer responsibilities, feedback to the student and to the program itself is an integral
part of the internship. Therefore, required contacts among intern, supervisor, and internship coordinator have been built
into the process.
The supervisor will:
• Approve job responsibilities and outcomes, which the intern has developed cooperatively with the Internship
Coordinator and the Work Supervisor.
• Develop and assign a specific project work to the internship team or individual so that they will have a
specific assignment to work on apart from the regular duties. The main objective of the internship is to
carry out problem based analysis and provide conclusion from which the organization can develop
strategy, system and / or introduce new products by conducting marketing survey/ organizational
survey/research/feasibility study etc.

For example, it can be one or a combination of the following:

o A development of corporate and functional strategies and plans of an existing firm or organization
o A major functional strategy for an existing large firm, i.e., from the whole company’s viewpoint
o System development of organizations/projects
o An evaluation and redesign of an organization system
• Provide ongoing, informal feedback to the intern about his/her work performance.
• Provide ongoing, informal feedback to the KUSOM Internship Coordinator through e-mail, or over telephone.
• Complete a mid term evaluation of the student’s internship using evaluation form KUSOM provides.

5
Kathmandu University School of Management
Management Internship Program

• Complete a final evaluation of the student's internship using either the organization's own evaluation form or one
that KUSOM provides. The evaluation should include a face-to-face meeting between the Work Supervisor and
the Intern, and a copy of the evaluation form should be sent to the KUSOM Internship Coordinator.
• Provide certificate of completion after the intern completes his/her internship in the organization.

Management Internship
Assignment 4 - Final Report

The primary goal of the internship is to give the students an exposure to real life organization setting and working
environment. As far as possible, students should try to find an internship in which they can work in the organization with a
specific job description of managerial nature. However, if students are not given such a job and instead are asked to work
on a specific area and produce a report, they will submit the final report of such a work according to the following
guidelines.
The project work provides students with an opportunity for learning as well as developing managerial skills. Students are
encouraged to experiment by putting new ideas to test. Once the problem and its causes are understood, students will
develop and evaluate potential solution/s that optimize organization strengths, profits and competitive opportunities and
minimize weaknesses and the risk of loss given environmental and competitive threats.
The content and depth of the report will have an impact on you passing the internship. A poorly written paper will not be
accepted under ANY circumstances (and will be returned to you for revisions and re-writing)! You will have to present the
Final Report in the presence of Project Supervisor and Work Supervisor (on his/her availability).
The due date for Final Report will be notified via virtual classroom.
Your Final Report should include the following:
I. Cover Page
• Student Name and title of position (e.g. student intern)
• Name of company/organization
• Address, and telephone number of company/organization
• Internship Supervisors’ name
o Work Supervisor in the organization
o Project supervisor in KUSOM
• Current Date
II. Executive Summary
The summary is one of the most important elements of the report and can be the most difficult aspect to write. It is best
written after the body of the report is completed, as that provides an overview on which summary is to be based. The
purpose of the summary is to give the first-time reader an idea of what the report is about. It also can serve as a reminder of
others not able to read the entire report in detail, but who might have a general interest in such a report such as your Dean,
Instructor, Advisor, or Interviewer for a later job.

The summary must be both descriptive and action-centered and not more than a full page in length. The material in the
summary need not necessarily follow the order of the report itself. The emphasis is on facts and results. A helpful way to
look at the decision about what is important to include in the summary is to think about being forced to reduce your report
to a page. You should consider including the following:

A. Description of the Company/Organization

• Brief history of company
• Purpose/mission of the company/organization
• Approximate number of people working and number of departments
• Brief description of customers/clients/people served
• How the work is divided - departments, sections, etc.
• Specific brief description of department in which you worked

B. Actions Taken
• Title/Role played during placement/internship experience
• Reason for selecting internship
• Results of project or specific work completed for company
• Benefit to you, the student intern
