FROM FATHER RICH
I want to thank Kamil, our Music Director and all the singing groups with their leaders for a beau-
tiful Christmas Concert last Saturday. We remind you that you can join any group at any time by
contacting our Music Director or the rectory. I also want to thank all volunteers from different
groups and Ministries in our Parish. It was good to see you at the appreciation meeting last week.
We invite and encourage others to join them to serve our Church for the higher glory of God and for
the good of all people.
God Bless, Fr. Rich
This past year was particularly devastating for the Church in Latin America.
Earthquakes in both Haiti and Chile resulted in the loss of life for thousands of this
region’s population. Additionally, these natural disasters caused unprecedented damage to
both physical structures and the fragile resources of the Church and its parishioners.
For the last forty-five years, contributions to the Collection for the Church in
Latin America have ensured that the people of South America and the Caribbean
experience the Lord’s love in the sacraments and in strong local faith communities.
The collection provides funding for the formation of seminarians, religious and catechists, as
well as for pastoral ministries such as evangelization. Obviously, it will take many years
to rebuild the churches and schools devastated in this region, but through your generous
support, the Church in Latin America will regain her strong presence in the two hundred
dioceses of the Southern Hemisphere.
Please know that I am grateful for your support of your local parish, the
Archdiocese and the Universal Church. May God continue to bless you and your loved
ones in this New Year. You are in my prayers; please keep me in yours.
Sincerely yours in Christ,

FEAST OF FAITH
The Greeting
At several points during the liturgy, the presider greets us with the words, “The Lord be with
you.” These simple words are not like the greetings that we exchange all day long—our “good morn-
ings,” our “hellos” and “how are yous.” This liturgical greeting has roots deep in the Old Testament.
In the book of Ruth, the words “the Lord be with you” are spoken by Boaz to the harvesters who are
laboring in his fields (2:4); in the book of Judges, an angel speaks similar words to Gideon (6:12),
where they are words of promise: for soon Gideon will lead his oppressed people to victory and
freedom. For us, the words become a greeting of peace, a prayer that the Lord will indeed be with
us, and a reminder of his promise to be with us always, to the end of the world (Matthew 28:20).
Our response—“And also with you,” soon to be “And with your spirit”—returns to the presider this
prayer for the Lord’s presence. As we know from the scriptures, a prayer for the Lord’s presence is
no small thing, for when God comes in our midst, God brings healing, grace, and challenge. God’s
presence transforms us. —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
