ArtOfVirus
I invite you to participate in the “challenge” called ArtOfVirus (AOV).

I am Kornél Fekete-Kovács, composer, soloist and artistic director of the Modern Art
Orchestra chamber orchestra. First let me tell you about the concept, and let me explain
what and how you will need to do, if you accept being part of this project.
The purpose of the initiative is to use music to model the spread of a pandemic, the
mutation of a virus, its latency, disappearance, and re-appearance, in other words: behavior.
Unfortunately these questions became part of our everyday lives for the past weeks and
months. I tried to think of something that can incorporate as many artists as possible,
creating a grand-scale piece of art together.
AOV is a massive performance, a virtual work of art, which, as the pandemic ends, will exit its
virtual space and will be performed in front of an audience in the traditional way.

I created a melody consisting of nine notes, which can be considered the body of the virus.
This melody lacks rhythm, tonality, harmony or any other context. This makes it possible for
it to be easily adapted into the different musical trends and styles of the different artists.
As the first step, I sent the “virus” motif to ten different composers, who created the first
mutations of the body, and thus the first ten branches of the spread of the “virus”.

HERE'S HOW THE ASSIGNMENT WORKS:

I SENT THE MELODY I IMAGINED (WHICH SYMBOLISES THE BODY OF THE VIRUS)
TO THE ABOVE MENTIONED COMPOSERS.

• THE TEN AUTHOR CREATED A MUSICAL CONTEXT BEHIND THE MELODY.

Thus they have been creating a stylistic starting point for the branch
established by their names.
• EVERY COMPOSER IN THE CHAIN PASSES FORWARD THE MUSIC WITH
A SINGLE MONOPHONIC MELODY!
The composer before you finished his part with a monophonic segment,
which must be arranged by you.
• CONTINUE THE MELODY IN A SIMILAR LENGTH, BUT DON'T COMPOSE
ACCOMPANIMENT FOR THE NEW PART!
After you finished the “orchestration” of the melody you were “given”, continue it with
your own musical ideas, but only with a single, monophonic melody.
(This is where the next artist starts his/her work.)
• WITH THE ORCHESTRATION YOU CAN USE ALL 18 MEMBERS
OF THE MODERN ART ORCHESTRA.
This one is optional, so that we can bring our musicians, who are practicing at home,
up to speed. However, if you don't want to use a full orchestra, a piano extraction or a
recording will suffice.
• LENGTH OF YOUR PART!
It is an important part of the game to be considered and treated it as a game, not
a task. I am kindly asking you to keep the length of your episode in a couple of bars,
few seconds. This is essential, that what you have at first and comes very naturally from
you, that is the best. And not at least don’t frighten away the upcoming composers! 
• RECORD THE FINISHED PRODUCT
(BOTH THE GIVEN AND THE NEW MATERIAL) IN YOUR PREFERRED METHOD!
Choose the format that is most accessible to you. You can create PDF sheet music,
PDF score, Music XML file, or record yourself playing it on the piano or any other
instrument in video or sound. If you send sheet music, the members of Modern Art
Orchestra will record it (within of our possibilities).
• THE RECORDED MATERIAL SHOULD BE UPLOADED
TO THE ART OF VIRUS PAGE (www.phonicchat.com/aov).
After accepting the invitation that you will receive by email, you can register in the
system. After the registration process you can upload files and information into your
profile. (photo, bio and the piece in different formats)

• SEND YOUR VERSION TO TWO OTHER COMPOSERS OF YOUR CHOICE!
To represent the spread and multiplication of the virus, the number of participations
will double with each composer. You should send your version to two composers who
are closest to your musical style, and are willing to participate in this game. (Before
sending out the invitation, you should make sure that the person accepts the
responsibility that comes with this game.)

• VERSION CODE.
The version code is important for identifying your segment. This is a hashtag, which is
a combination of numbers. The first number (or first two numbers) after the # sign
signals one of the ten branches (for example #1 Péter Eötvös, #5 Tony Grey or
#10 Gábor Subicz). The second number stands for the next layer of composers,
so if Tony Grey sends his version to two others, that generates to more numbers:
#5.1 or #5.2. In the next layer the numbers will be #5.1.1, #5.1.2 or #5.2.1, #5.2.2.
This code will be automatically generated when you register to the AOV-admin site.
• DEADLINE.
Every composer has a week to complete the assignment. The deadline, ideally, is
Thursday, 12 PM, every week.
• PUBLICITY.
The spread of #ArtOfVirus is monitored publicly. The posts, which contain the finished
pieces, are public. In addition, every week on Friday at 8 PM (CET) we summarize that
week's progress in a livestream on the Facebook page of the MAO.
• THE GOALS OF THE PRODUCTION.
The primary goal is to create a great virtual piece of art, a great virtual performance.
For making this performance visible for the audience we created the Art Of Virus
site on the www.phonicchat.com/aov. Secondary goal is to create a grand-scale
musical composition, which, after summary, clarification and orchestration, will be
presented in front of an audience as a ten-movement orchestral opus after the end of
the pandemic. The premiere will be at an outdoor venue in Budapest, in collaboration
with the Modern Art Orchestra ensemble and guest soloists.

How to create your profile

instrument, nationality, short bio and upload your photo.

The Content block is for your data in connection with the Art of Virus project.
You can add the following information and objects: the Youtube ID of your
video, an mp3 Audio file, the score or leed sheet of your composition, and a
music.xml file.

Note: All the files will be overwritten any time when you upload a new file to
the same field! Only one file is uploadable to each field of the administration
panel. After uploading your content the file’s name does not show up in the field
of the admin page, but it will appear in your profile.

We kindly ask you to enter all the information and objects of your contribution
in order to create a full profile.

kamaraegyüttes vezetője. Engedd meg, hogy néhány szóval beavassalak a koncepcióba, és
leírjam, hogy mit és hogyan kell tenned ha vállaltad, hogy részese leszel a projektnek.
A kezdeményezés arról szól, hogy zenével miként modellezhetnénk egy járvány terjedését,
a vírus mutációját, lappangását, eltűnését, majd annak újra felbukkanását, egyszóval
viselkedését. Sajnálatos módon ezekben a hetekben, hónapokban az életünk részévé
váltak ezek a kérdések. Egy olyan dolgot próbáltam kitalálni, amely minél több alkotó
művészt von be a folyamatba, ezáltal közösen létre hozva egy nagyszabású alkotást.
Az AOV egy hatalmas performance, egy virtuális műalkotás, amely a járvány szűntével
kilép majd a virtuális térből és a hagyományos módon is közönség elé kerül.

Létrehoztam, egy kilenc hangból áló dallamot, amely a vírus törzsének tekinthető. Ez a
melódia mentes ritmustól, tonalitástól, harmónia, vagy bármilyen kontextustól. Ez teszi
lehetővé, hogy különböző zenei irányzatokban, stílusokban alkotók egyaránt könnyűszerrel
adaptálhatják saját hangzásaikba.
A “vírus” motívumot első lépésben tíz különböző zeneszerzőnek küldtem el, ők hozták létre
a törzs első mutánsait, egyben megteremtették a “vírus” terjedésének első tíz ágát.

• A HANGSZERELÉSNÉL IGÉNYBE VEHETED
A MODERN ART ORCHESTRA TELJES, 18 FŐS TAGSÁGÁT!
Ez egy opcionális dolog, amellyel a zenekar otthon gyakorló zenészeit tudjuk
helyzetbe hozni, amennyiben nem szeretnéd nagyzenekarra hangszerelni a darabot,
úgy egy zongorakivonat, vagy felvétel is elegendő.
• TERJEDELEM
Fontos a játékban, hogy ne feladatként tekintsünk rá, hanem valóban játékként
kezeljük azt. Azt kérném, hogy az általad elkészített epizód ne legyen túlságosan
hosszú. A dolog lényege pont az, hogy ami nagyjából elsőre megszületik, és magától
előjön belőled, az lesz a legjobb. És nem utolsó sorban ne riaszd el az utánad
következőket sem!

Az email címedre érkezett meghívót elfogadva tudsz regisztrálni a rendszerbe.

A vírus terjedését és sokszorosítását reprezentálandó minden szerzőnél
megduplázódik a szám. Így az általad készített verziót el kell küldened két olyan
szerzőnek, akik az általad meghatározott zeneiséget leginkább tükrözik, és benne
vannak ebben a játékban. (Mielőtt elküldöd, érdemes meggyőződni róla, hogy az
illető vállalja e a játékkal járó kötelezettségeket.)
A két jelölt meghívása szintén az Art Of Virus oldalán történik, ennek részletes
leírását az angol és magyar leírás között a “How to invite new composers” című
részben találod!
• VERZIÓ KÓD:
A verzió kód arra szolgál, hogy könnyen beazonosítható legyen az általad készített
részlet. Ez egy számkombináció. A számjegyek közül a # után az első
(vagy első kettő) jelöli a 10 ág valamelyikét (pl. #1 Eötvös Péter, #5 - Tony Grey,
vagy #10 - Subicz Gábor)
A második számjegy már a következő lépcső zeneszerző kódja lesz, így ha pl. Tony
Grey két embernek küldi tovább, akkor két új számot generál: #5.1 vagy #5.2. A
következő lépcsőben #5.1.1, #5.1.2 vagy #5.2.1, 5.2.2 keletkezik majd. A verzió
kódodat az AOV adminisztrációs felülete automatikusan generálja, amikor
regisztrálsz az oldalunkon.
• HATÁRIDŐ
Minden szerzőnek egy hét áll rendelkezésére a poszt feltöltéséig attól számítva,
hogy megkapta az előző szerzőtől az anyagot. A határidő ideális esetben minden
hét csütörtök éjfél!
• NYILVÁNOSSÁG:
Az #artofvirus terjedésének követése a nyilvánosság előtt zajlik.
Az Art Of Virus oldalára feltöltött anyagok nyilvánosak, így bárki számára
megtekinthetők és meghallgathatók. Emellett heti egy alkalommal, minden
pénteken este 8:00-kor (CET) élő stream adásban foglaljuk össze a történéseket
a MAO Facebook oldalán.
• A PRODUKCIÓ VÉGSŐ CÉLJAI:
A produkció elsődleges célja egy, a virtuális térben lévő óriási performance
létrehozása, amelynek nyomonkövetésére jött létre
a www.phonicchat.com/aov oldal. Ezt követően egy olyan nagyszabású zenemű
létrehozása, amely egy összegzés, tisztázás, hangszerelés után, egy tíz tételből
álló nagyzenekari műként kerül bemutatása a járvány végeztével. A tervezett
bemutató budapesti szabadtéri helyszínen kerül megrendezésre, a zenekar, Modern
Art Orchestra és meghívott szólistái közreműködésével.
