Chapter 6 Review Problems
Important definitions

Relation Any relationship between an input (x) and an output (y).

Function A relation where each input x has exactly one output y.
Domain All possible inputs.
Range All possible outputs.

Tips on finding domains and ranges

Domain

– When given an equation, try to find what is not in the domain. In particular, look for
inputs that make a denominator equal to zero or put a negative number under a
square root.
− If you are given a graph, ask "what x-values have a y-value?"
− If given a table or list of ordered pairs, just list all “xʼs”

Range

– When given an equation, think about its graph. Ask “what y-values does the graph
cross?” For parabolas and absolute value functions, you need to find the vertex.
− If given a table or list of ordered pairs, just list all “yʼs”

1. Find the domain of (a) f ( x) = (b) g ( x) = x ! 2 (c) h( x) =
x!4 x+5

2. Find the domain of and range for the functions in (a) – (e).

Inverses. The inverse of a relation is the new relation you get when you reverse
Its inputs and outputs

- Given a table you can find its inverse by switching the x and y values.

- Given a graph you can find its inverse by reflecting it over the line y = x

- Given an equation you find its inverse by the following method:

ex Find the inverse of f ( x) = 3 x ! 12

y = 3 x ! 12 • Replace f(x) with "y" if needed.

x = 3 y ! 12 • Switch x and y
x + 12 = 3 y • Solve for y
x + 12
=y
3
x + 12 1
y= = x+4
3 3
1
• So y = x + 4 is the inverse of our original function.

3. Find the inverse of the following functions:

(a) f ( x) = 2 x + 6 (b) f ( x) = x ! 12 (c) f ( x) = x 2 ! 1

4. Sketch the graph of the inverse of the
function to the right

Line Tests

Vertical line test: If there is a vertical line that crosses a graph in two different
places, then that relation is not a function. Otherwise it is.

Horizontal line test: If there is a horizontal line that crosses a graph in two
different places, then the inverse of that relation is not a function. Otherwise it is.

5. Determine whether or not each graph below is a function.

Then determine if its inverse is a function. Circle “Yes” if it is a function.

Graph: Yes / No Graph: Yes / No Graph: Yes / No

Inverse: Yes / No Inverse: Yes / No Inverse: Yes / N0

6. Let f ( x) = x 2 + 1 and g ( x) = x ! 3 . Find the following and simplify completely.

(a) f (!5) (c) f ( x) ! g ( x) (e) g (x) 2 (g) f ( g ( x))

(b) f ( x) + g ( x) (d) f ( x) ! g ( x) (f) g ( f ( x)) (h) g ( g ( x))

7. Let f ( x) = !2 x 2 ! 3 x + 5. Find f (!3)

Graphing
You need to know the graphs of each function below.
You also need to be able to find their transformations (shifts, and reflections).

y =| x | y = x2 y= x y = x3

y=3 x y = ax, a >1 y = ax, 0 < a <1

8. Graph each of the following. Label key points and asymptotes.

(a) y = ! | x + 1 | +2 (b) y = ( x + 1) 3 + 2

(c) y = x!5 +4 (d) y = !3 x ! 2

(e) y = $ ! + 2 (f) y = !3 x ! 4

9. Write an equation for each graph below.

.
10. A function f (x) is graphed to the right.

Sketch a graph of each transformation of

f (x) below. Label the image of point P

(a) f ( x) ! 1 (b) f ( x + 2) (c) ! f ( x) + 2
