Five-Day Camps

Where are the headwaters of Cabin John Creek, and where does it empty into the mighty Potomac? Who and what inhabits this body of water flowing by our Nature Center? Join us and find out! Just like Lewis and Clark, we’ll venture forth: exploring the creek from beginning to end, documenting our sightings, preparing our meals in the “wild,” and discovering how early explorers used natural resources and simple tools to survive the expedition. Prepare to get wet, prepare to investigate, prepare for adventure! Locust Grove Nature Center

Chesapeake Week

Cabin John Expedition Force – Extended Care

Explore the Chesapeake Bay and the watershed region through sailing, camping, canoeing and more! We’ll begin the week by exploring the Bay by boat as we hoist our sails, trawl for fish, and analyze water samples looking for microscopic life forms. By mid-week, we’ll take a more intimate look at the Bay’s waterways through canoeing, camping, and fossil hunting. We will finish the week by examining the lives of those who have made the Bay their home, both past and present, including early colonial life and life in a long house village. Botanical Art Camp II

Botanical art is a superb way of teaching careful observation and respect for nature’s diversity, and to learn about Maryland’s natural history through its trees and wildflowers. Through careful observation and field work in both our garden areas and the natural forest, campers will learn how to journal, collect specimens and make a pressed sample, then sketch/draw/paint what they’ve found. Students may work in graphite pencil, colored pencil or watercolor (sketchbooks and media provided), then choose a favorite work of art to mat and frame. Every time you strike a match or light a candle you’re receiving a gift from our ancient ancestors—fire! We’ll explore the remarkable role this gift has played in shaping civilization, and how different cultures have used fire to heat, cook, fight, manufacture, and illuminate their world. We’ll see who can start a fire quickest without matches, take apart a firecracker, cook our own food over open flames, and bake our own clay pots. As we do these fun things, we’ll learn what fire actually is. Most importantly, we’ll hear from experts on how to keep all fires, safe fires. Locust Grove Nature Center
