Case Project 2-2

Choosing the Right Edition

You have your new server for the CSM Tech Publishing upgrade project and are ready to install Windows Server
2016. Case Project 2-1 describes the current environment and requirements of CSM Tech. Which edition of
Windows Server 2016 will you install? Include information on whether it should be a full GUI or Server Core
installation. Explain your answer.

I believe that in the CSM Tech situation an upgrade to a different windows server 2016 type is not possible. The

only upgrade option available from a windows server 2016 essentials is to a windows server 2016 essentials. Hence,

a clean install is the only option left to get CSM Tech up and running again. By a process of elimination we could

see that the windows server essentials version won`t cut it, because of its 25 users or less limitation. The CSM Tech

Company is expecting growth, so a server that can handle a larger number of user is called for. In my opinion, a

windows server 2016 Data center OS clean install is the best way to go. The data center version allows you to install

unlimited number of instances of the OS in virtual machines. Users who have access to the internet can easily access

the company’s resources, from anywhere in the world. A Data center server offers other features that are also

valuable, including Storage Spaces Direct, Storage Replica, clustering and Shielded Virtual Machines. The

previously enumerated features provide high availability, fault tolerance as well as disaster recovery. Because the

CSM Tech Company requires remote access, internet printing, TCP/IP services and most likely wireless connection;

it is required to install the GUI experience to use any of the said functions. Since CSM Tech has enough budget to

install a new server, it is recommended to get a processor of 3.1 GHz or faster 64-bit multicore, a 2 GB OF RAM

memory and a 60 GB or more for a successful Standard or a Data center server install.

Case Project 2-3:

Performing Server Post installation Tasks

You have finished installing Windows Server 2016 on the new server for CSM Tech. Next, you need to decide what
to name the server and how it will participate in the existing domain: as a domain controller, a member server, or a
standalone server. The existing server is named CSM-Server1-DC, and the new server will be located near the
existing server in the equipment closet. List the post installation tasks you must perform on this server, including
details on the server name and its role in the domain (if any). Don’t include installing specific server roles just yet.
The first step in performing a server post installation is configuring the time on the newly installed server. It is

important to set the correct time on the server to avoid issues ranging from authentication failure, wrong system logs

timestamps to web certificates issues. The next step in the post server installation is the IP configuration. It is

important to configure TC/IP services to be able to access the intranet and the internet. Once connected it would be

wise to secure the server and the network by configuring the firewall to only allow connections from trusted

networks. Since the primary server was named CSM-Server1-DC, I would choose to name the new server: CSM-

Server2-DC to be able to differentiate between them. Obviously, answers can vary, but the name should indicate the

server’s specialized function. This server should probably be a second domain controller to provide load balancing

and fault tolerance for the Active Directory. Remember that users are seeing logon time’s increase because of the

load on the server, and an additional DC should improve logon performance. Other tasks include configuring

automatic updates, configuring static IP addresses, and setting date, time, and time zone.
