New Library Director
plans for the future
Michael Crose, the Timberland Regional
Library District’s (TRL) Interim Director,
was promoted this summer to Library
Director following an intensive interview
process. He had been serving in that
capacity since October 2009.
As TRL’s Library Director Crose is
responsible for managing all aspects of
the multi-county rural library district,
which includes 27 libraries, five co-

considering alternative ways to provide
services besides library buildings, which
take great investments of time and
money. One possibility is expanding
TRL kiosks into malls, coffee shops,
grocery stores and other high traffic
spaces.”

District announces its sixth annual
Timberland Reads Together
One Book, One Community selection:
Tales & Poems of Edgar Allan Poe.
Timberland Reads Together is a month-
long program held each October to
promote and celebrate reading and
community. Everyone in the five-county
library district (Grays Harbor, Thurston,
Lewis, Pacific, Mason) is encouraged
to read any collection of Poe’s works
and to attend free book discussions,
performances and programs throughout
the month at local Timberland libraries.
Many editions and copies are available
at Timberland libraries.
The kickoff event, An Evening with
Edgar Allan Poe: The Poet’s Journey, by
award-winning Washington playwright
Bryan Willis and starring critically
acclaimed actor Tim Hoban, will be
at the Washington Center for the

Kiosk offers TRL services at Nisqually Tribal Library
In partnership with the Nisqually Tribe,
the Timberland Regional Library District
opened a library service kiosk this
summer in the tribe’s library, located on
the Nisqually Tribe reservation.
The kiosk is equipped with two computer
stations. One provides access to the TRL
library catalog, website, and reference
databases. The other allows Timberland
library cardholders to check out their

TRL summer program a success, and not only for the numbers
The TRL annual districtwide Summer
Reading Program (SRP) finished August
31 with 13,849 participants from infants
to teens, 562 more than last year, and a
raft of good stories. Here are a few:
One young teen felt he’d outgrown SRP, but
when a youth librarian at the Yelm library
told him about some of the offerings —

A six-year-old told the Chehalis library’s
youth librarian that his favorite book

had become a reader over the summer
by participating in SRP. It was just the
incentive he needed.

holder can use the kiosk to:
• Search the library catalog, place holds on
books, DVDs, CDs and other materials,
and request that holds be delivered to the
tribal library for pickup.
• Search the TRL reference databases.
• Search the TRL website for upcoming
library programs and activities.
• Contact the Timberland "Ask A Librarian"
service by phone, email, or online chat to
ask a reference question or get help with
library cards or checking out materials
(see back page for contact information).
• Pick up and check out holds that have
been delivered to the Nisqually Library.
• Check their library card account.
• Sign-up for a computer session at any
TRL library.

The teens who attended the McCleary
library’s Guitar Hero event were global
in their diversity. They were homeschool,
Christian school, and public school youths;
had different religious and political
backgrounds; they were grades 7 to 12, with
one out of school. They were boys and girls,
shy and outgoing, academic and not so…
They got along, learned about each other
and talked not one bit about teen celebrities.
In the fall, summer programs give
way to story times for babies, toddlers,
preschoolers and families. School-age
children and their families are offered a
variety of afterschool programs and family
activities. Stop by your local Timberland
