VOLUNTEERING AT BROOKSIDE ANIMAL SHELTER – WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

4.1. ____
Volunteers should be at least sixteen years of age and have some experience of being around
animals. We accept volunteers from after-school programmes, retirement homes, and of
course interested individuals. If you are volunteering as part of a school project, we can make
arrangements with your teachers. For those under the age of 18, a parent should come to the
first session with the volunteer.

4.2. ____
New volunteers will be asked mainly to interact with the animals, giving them the attention
they need and which our full-time staff don’t always have time to provide. You can also be
asked to help with the feeding routine. More experienced volunteers often discuss options
and make recommendations to visitors who are hoping to adopt a pet.

4.3. ____
We ask our volunteers to promise to spend eight hours per month at the shelter, two hours
per week or four hours every fortnight. We do have a schedule for volunteers so that we do
not have too many people in the shelter at once. Of course, some of our volunteers do many
more hours than the minimum because they enjoy it and feel it is a good move for the
community.

4.4. ____
Before you start, you must attend an introduction session. This is held twice a month, on the
second and last Saturday. After the general orientation, individual training is provided. This
ranges from one one-hour session for cat volunteers to four hours for dog volunteers.

A BIRTHDAY PLAN

“What should we make for dad’s birthday dinner?” Katie asked her mother.
The woman looked up from the newspaper and smiled. “That’s so sweet of you! But don’t you
think he’d prefer to go out for a meal?”
“I just thought it would be more special if we did something at home. He eats out all the time,
after all. I’ve found this recipe for homemade pizza. He’ll love it, and it will be fun!”
“Do you know how much work…” her mother stopped herself. “I think that’s a lovely idea!
Let’s make a list of what we need.”

5.2. What is the mother’s first reaction to Katie’s idea?

A. She is unsure.
B. She thinks it is a good plan.
C. She says it will ruin her own plans.

KEEP THEM COOKING

In the past, girls learned to cook and boys were taught how to build things. Nowadays, boys
and girls often have a chance to practise both skills at school, but those who don’t cook at
home often forget what they’ve learned. Even if you don’t always have time to cook with your
kids, just once a week will keep them in practice. Regular cooking may also lead to a long-
term interest. Knowing how to prepare their own meals is not just a way to save money, it can
improve young people’s lifestyles, keep them healthier, and impress their friends as well.

5.3. Who is the article written for?

A. teenagers B. parents C. teachers

PROBLEM CHILD OR BORN TO SUCCEED?

We often assume that children who listen quietly in class, follow instructions carefully and turn
in assignments on time will definitely succeed in life. They are following the rules, after all.
Haven’t we all been taught that this is exactly what we need to do to become the best we can
be? Surely the rules were invented in order to help us succeed? But some things I’ve read
recently have made me wonder about this, and made me realise that people like me often
have a big success in life.

As a young child, I was often called stubborn, uncooperative, difficult and even incorrigible.
I  actually had to ask what the last word meant, though I could easily guess that it wasn’t
anything positive. No one wanted to explain it to me, which made me think it had to be really
terrible. Looking it up revealed the truth. Adults thought I was ‘unable to be improved or
corrected’. In other words, they thought I was hopeless.

Fortunately, I was too confident to take this very seriously. I knew I was intelligent. I often
asked questions which teachers found interesting, I was happy to dig deep into a subject, and
I expressed myself well in speech and on paper. My problem was that I couldn’t do things the
way I’d been told. It seemed silly to me to read only five pages of a history book when the
whole chapter was so interesting. And why do maths problems in a certain way when I could
get the correct answer faster and more efficiently on my own?

Fortunately, when I was about 14, I had a teacher who recognised that I wasn’t lazy or trying
to cause trouble. She saw that I just had original ideas, and that I wasn’t breaking rules out of
anger, but simply because they didn’t make sense to me. She gave me more chances to do
things my way, although she did point out that if I wanted to pass exams, I would have to learn
to take the normal route sometimes.

Since entering university, I’ve seen several articles which claim that children like me are the
most likely to succeed in life in a big way. People who don’t stick to the beaten path are
obviously the ones who come up with revolutionary new ways of doing things. And though
qualities like patience and determination are needed to have a lasting success, you won’t
have anything to succeed at if you don’t break a few rules first!

NATURE IN THE BIG CITY

When we think of huge cities like New York or London, nature is not the first thing that comes
to mind. Instead, we imagine streets filled with cars and buses, and a few trees trying to
survive in this unfriendly environment. 7.1. _____ But while both these two great parks are
welcoming green spaces, they seem too perfect to have much to do with nature.

However, if you make the effort to look for it, you discover that nature in a city area is nothing
unusual. For example, I used to think that real nature could be found only outside cities.
7.2. _____ This small green space along the banks of the River Thames had been set up by
volunteers, and it featured labelled plants, information maps, and pictures of the riverside
birds. Schoolchildren were brought there to discover the bits of nature that still survived in
their city, and it was an amazing experience.

While that little piece of nature has since been built over, some larger, more organised projects
are being developed in cities. One of the most recent and impressive of these is the
Walthamstow Wetlands in North London. 7.3.  _____ And because of its size, as you walk
along its trails you can forget that the city centre is only a short trip away.
adapted from https://www.countryfile.com

A. That it was right in the centre of a busy part of the city made it even more remarkable.
B. To my surprise, when I moved to London years ago, I came across a riverside nature
preserve.
C. Of course, Central Park and Hyde Park in these big cities are well-known all over the
world.
D. Life was better in the countryside, but in the city access to nature was equally
important.
E. At 210 hectares, it is the largest water and marshland reserve in a city in Europe.

THINKING OF TRAVELLING WITH PETS?

4.1. ____
Many of us treat our pets like members of the family. We celebrate their birthdays, post
photos of them online, and take them out on play dates. It is no wonder that many pet owners
are taking their pets on holiday. We want them to enjoy the same things we do!

4.2. ____
Travelling with a pet is not as straightforward as you might think, and there are several factors
to consider. After all, you can’t just put a lead on your dog and decide to sail to France the
same day. Finding out the rules and planning in advance are essential.

4.3. ____
First, remember that your pet must have an identification microchip and a pet passport. It
also needs to have had the necessary vaccinations a fixed amount of time before your trip.
Furthermore, you need an approved container for your pet no matter what form of transport
you choose.

4.4. ____
Another thing to think about is your pet’s comfort. Some pets are extremely stressed when
they are taken away from the places they know. You may be separated from your pet for hours
during a trip, which means you can’t comfort them. So, if your pet is nervous, maybe it’s better
to leave them in the care of a trusted friend or pet-sitter.

A NEW DIRECTION

I made my announcement and waited.

“You must realise what a big risk this is,” my dad finally said. “You’d have a secure future
as a lawyer. How many artists are actually successful?”
“Not many, I know, but I really do have to try.” Now I had to reveal the other part of my
news. “Actually, I’ve already been accepted to St. Martin’s and the Slade School.”
My mother’s expression changed. “That’s amazing!” she cried. “Well done, Sam!” For her,
success in any form was a good thing. But I still had to bring my father around.

THE TATE MODERN GALLERY

Tate Modern, located on a winding river bank in London, is not only one of the most visited
major galleries in the world, it also has one of the most unusual buildings. Built originally as a
power station, the structure sat empty for a number of years before the idea of turning it into
a public art space came up. After several years of planning, work began – including the
removal of the enormous power-generating turbines. The gallery opened in 2000 and it
shows modern art from around the world. Entrance is free, although there is a charge to see
the special exhibitions. But just entering the enormous turbine hall is worth it, whether you
take the time to view the art or not.

REALISING AN ANTARCTIC DREAM

I have always been fascinated by Antarctica, especially its wildlife and its huge, empty
landscapes, but I never imagined that I’d be able to travel there. I satisfied my interest by
watching films and documentaries and reading various articles by people who had been
there. I discovered later that, like me, many people don’t realise that you can take a tour of
Antarctica, which is strange considering the number of options that come up when you do a
simple search on the Internet. I think we all like to imagine that it is the one place on Earth that
is totally free of tourists.

So, when a friend who shared my interest suggested we go on a two-week cruise to Antarctica
together, I actually hesitated for half a second. Was my dream of a lost continent about to be
destroyed forever? But when she told me it would only cost a few thousand pounds, and
would be a great opportunity for me to write about my own experiences there, I decided to
go for it.

Our ship sailed from the southernmost part of Argentina. The voyage included a very
unpleasant time as we navigated the Drake Passage, one of the roughest areas of ocean in
the world. Luckily, I had packed some medication to prevent getting sick, so it wasn’t nearly
as horrible as I’d thought. Instead of being shut up in my cabin like so many other passengers,
I managed to see huge sea birds touching the waves with their wings, and to enjoy the
freedom of feeling a part of nature. Later, in calmer waters, seeing the enormous whales near
our ship was like travelling back in time and meeting the dinosaurs.

I have to say that sailing through Antarctica, even in a fairly luxurious ship, gave me a feeling
I had never got before from travelling. I felt I had reached a land where people had no place,
as if we were visiting the Earth before humans. The few times we were actually allowed off the
ship – once to see a place where penguins live, which smelled amazing! – were less interesting
than just standing on the deck and admiring the hugeness of the place in the never-ending
daylight. Sometimes a place you’ve dreamed about is a disappointment when you actually
visit it, but what I felt in Antarctica was an amazing sense of familiarity and rightness. Yes, this
was the place I had imagined.

A MEMORABLE DAY WITH THE KIDS

When my best friend and I decided to take our younger brothers and sisters to the zoo, we
made a few major mistakes. The first one was mentioning our plans to some other friends.
One by one, they said, “Can my little brother (or sister) come along too?” However, they were
not volunteering to help out. 7.1. _____ We objected, saying that the parents wouldn’t trust
their youngest children to us. Immediately, the parents began phoning, saying how much
they appreciated our generous offer. As a result, we ended up in charge of five 6- and 7-year-
olds.

A second mistake was not checking the weather forecast. 7.2. _____ Of course, there were
covered parts of the zoo such as the reptile house, so we stayed in those until the rain passed.
This is where our third mistake became obvious, though. Both fear (snakes!) and boredom (the
same old snakes…) made it almost impossible to keep the group under control. In the end,
we discovered a solution. 7.3. _____ Thanks to the wonders of film, we had 90 minutes of
warm, dry, quiet happiness, and the day was a success.

A. The zoo cinema was showing an amazing 3-D animal adventure story.
B. We had no idea what to do, and it turned out they didn’t know either.
C. They just wanted us to take the little ones off their hands for an afternoon.
D. It was dry when we set out, but by the time we reached the zoo gates it was
pouring down.
E. We didn’t know it would be so hard to keep them interested.

B. LACK OF WATER IN THE NEAR FUTURE
C. USE OF WATER WITHOUT THINKING
D. POSITIVE CHANGES FROM LESS EXPENSIVE SOLUTIONS
E. BETTER USE OF THE WATER AVAILABLE
F. AN UNNECESSARY WASTE OF HUMAN ENERGY

HOW CLEAN WATER CHANGES LIVES

4.1. ____
Those of us in the richer parts of the world think that we will always have access to plenty of
clean water. There may be dry times when we are asked to use less water and avoid watering
our gardens, but it’s still true that all we have to do is turn on a tap in the house to get all the
water we need.

4.2. ___
What we often forget is that there isn’t enough water in some parts of the world. People living
in these areas spend enormous amounts of time and effort collecting and transporting water
to their homes. This uses the time and energy which they could put into growing food, raising
farm animals or developing other types of businesses.

4.3. ___
Having clean water not only saves time, it also makes people healthier. Much of the water that
was collected from impure sources created a number of different diseases. With clean water,
both children and adults are less likely to suffer from skin and eye problems and other, more
dangerous diseases.

4.4. ___
New technologies are being developed to help in this effort. Water-cleaning systems that
don’t cost a lot, water pumps that use power from the sun and other new ideas are making
clean water available in places where it was difficult to imagine before. This gives us hope that
spending hours collecting and carrying dirty water will soon be a thing of the past.

A RETURN TO COMPETITION

“So, are you ready for this?” my trainer asked me as I stepped forward towards the mat. This
was my first gymnastics competition in nearly six months, and even though I’d been doing
well in practice, I was not convinced my recently hurt wrist would support me when I was
dealing with nerves at the same time. “I know you can do it!” he added.
I turned to him and smiled. “I know I can do it too. But my wrist…!”
“Just remember, every part of your body supports the others. Forget about the parts
– think about the whole. You’re going to be amazing!” As I stepped onto the mat, I just hoped
he was right.
5.1. The narrator is worried that
A. stress might cause a new injury.
B. practice has not made her fully ready to compete.
C. emotional and physical factors might affect her performance.

Tekst 2.
THE LIMITS OF BEING PERFECT?

In the world of elite skill sports like gymnastics, what we expect athletes to be able to do keeps
changing. What was considered perfect a decade or two ago is nothing special nowadays.
And when extraordinary athletes like gymnast Simone Biles come onto the scene, the challenges
for others become even greater. My question is, are we hurting young athletes’ minds and
bodies by expecting them to do things which seemed impossible a few years ago? That
remains to be seen, but it is fascinating to watch young athletes try to reach new levels of skill.

5.2. In general, the writer

A. is complaining about how much we expect athletes to do.
B. is interested in seeing how young athletes deal with new challenges.
C. is criticising the system for being harmful to young athletes.

AN UNLIKELY DREAM

“You know that becoming an astronomer is a difficult task,” the Professor said. “Even for rich
people from the best schools. For you, it will be very hard indeed.”

Kelly was sad and worried. At thirteen, she was unusually tall and thin, but she looked strong
and was totally sure of herself. Most people meeting her for the first time thought that she
wanted to become a track star or footballer. The idea that someone growing up in a poor part
of Manchester wanted to become a scientist sounded like a joke. But Kelly was not laughing.

“I know all that,” she said. “But we’re always being told that anything is possible, right? So
why not for me?”

“My dear,” the Professor said. “I am not saying it is impossible. I am saying you will need all
the help you can get. And I think I know where to start.” He put a finger to his forehead. “You
would not think so from looking at me, but other scientists still know and respect me, and I
know just the person to help you.”

He got up and went into the only other room of his tiny flat. Kelly sat, looking at the dusty
stacks of books and papers and the ugly old wallpaper in the little light that came through the
dirty window. The flat had obviously never been very nice, and the Professor was not interested
enough in his surroundings to improve them.

She was remembering how the idea of becoming an astronomer had come to her. Two years
ago, a local group had organised a camping trip to the countryside. She had hardly ever been
out of the city, and she was afraid it would be wet, freezing, uncomfortable and totally boring.
But that night, as she couldn’t sleep, she got out of her tent and discovered something
amazing. The night air was wonderfully clear, and the stars filled the sky in numbers she had
never imagined. Looking up, she could hardly believe how huge and complicated it was. She
wanted to learn more, and as soon as she returned home she began reading, watching
documentaries and attending lectures.

She heard the Professor talking on the telephone in the next room. Then he came back in, put
the phone into her hand and nodded. He was smiling, but he also looked quite proud. “There
is someone you need to talk to. She was a student of mine, and she has some ideas for you.”
Kelly took the phone and put it up to her ear. She felt nervous, but after two seconds she said,
“This is Kelly Wakeman.” She somehow knew that this was her first real step.

LOCAL PARK SAVED AS CITIZENS FIGHT BACK

Blacktown citizens are celebrating after city council changed its mind and decided not to
close the local park in order to make the site available for building. After a long campaign to
convince the council to change direction, their decision was greeted with a huge sigh of relief.

Lead campaigner and member of the council, Jennifer Fildes, was extremely happy with the
choice made at last Wednesday’s council meeting. 7.1. _____ According to Mrs Fildes, the
decision was a triumph for the community and for social pressure. She said the area would

community cannot be pushed around. She was really delighted. 7.2. _____ Everybody was
similarly relieved.

Mrs Fildes, who raised the issue of the park before the council, was supported by another
councilman, Leo Kelly. 7.3. _____ In his opinion, neighbourhoods do really care about the out-

When a recent study showed that children around the world are generally getting less physical

we do as children affect us later on in life? 8.2. _____ there is some debate about how good

FASHION ICONS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

A. Elizabeth Taylor
With her extraordinary natural beauty: violet-blue eyes, perfect skin and jet black hair,
Elizabeth Taylor stood out from the beginning. But as she gained wealth and fame, Taylor had
no hesitation when it came to adding to her natural attributes with extravagant clothes and
eye-popping jewels. She wore some of the most famous designers of the day, and her name
became synonymous with diamonds, especially after she acquired one of the largest ones in
the world. Although she was rather shy and reserved in everyday life, she embraced her role
as the personification of the kind of extravagance that most of us only dream of.

B. Katherine Hepburn
Katherine Hepburn was not your typical soft and girlish Hollywood beauty. With her strong-
boned face and athletic figure, she personified a kind of confidence and toughness that was
usually associated with men, and her fashion choices reflected this. Although she could wear
a designer gown as well as any woman, her preferred outfits included straight-legged trousers,
tailored shirts and big-shouldered jackets, choices which influenced how women dressed and
still dress all over the world. Later in life she became known for wearing tops with “Mandarin”
or stand-up collars, partly in order to hide the loose skin on her neck – which just goes to
show that even the most confident women have their insecurities.

C. Madonna
Never one to tone it down or keep it subtle, Madonna exploded onto the fashion scene in the
early 1980s with her outrageous style choices and ever-changing hair-dos. When she first hit
our screens, her style – T-shirts over dresses and dresses over jeans, with lots of big accessories
– was adopted by young women in a flash, partly because none of it was expensive to buy.
This was fashion for everyone. Nevertheless, she has worn some of the top designers, and
though she is no longer so much of an influence in the fashion world, she is never shy about
trying a new – and usually outrageous – look.

AN UNEXPECTED TREASURE TROVE

You may have noticed people going around with metal detectors in fields and on unused
plots of land and wondered what on earth they were hoping to find. When two amateur
archaeologists, Rene Schoen and his 13-year-old student Luca Malaschnitschenko, were using
their metal detectors on the Baltic island of Ruegen, they certainly had no idea of what they
were about to discover. 5.1. _____ But when they looked more closely, it soon became clear
that what they had uncovered was far more important than that.

They contacted the state archaeology office, who sent a group of professionals to investigate.
5.2. _____ This is common practice when treasure troves are discovered for fear that greedier
treasure hunters might hear of the find and try to claim it for themselves. Having kept their
secret until preparations could be made, Rene and Luca were actually invited to take part in
the dig, which must have added greatly to the thrill of the initial discovery. 5.3. _____ The find
included a silver amulet in the shape of the hammer of Thor, pearls, rings and other jewellery,
and nearly 600 coins. Some of the coins have been identified as being from the time of the
Danish Viking King Harald, also known as Bluetooth, who reigned in the 10th century CE.
Some of the coins are older and came from the Middle East, evidence of the distant travels
the Vikings undertook.

And if King Harald’s nickname “Bluetooth” sounds familiar, there actually is a connection (pun
intended). It seems that the engineers who developed the wireless technology had been
reading about the Viking king, so they decided to give their invention the code name
Bluetooth. 5.4. _____ Why the king himself was called Bluetooth is a matter of debate. One
widely accepted explanation, however, is that he had a dead front tooth which appeared blue
in colour and it was the first thing people noticed about him. Whatever the truth, he certainly
knew how to hide a treasure trove!

A. When a large-scale excavation was finally organised, what was uncovered amazed
even the experts.
B. Although the area had long been considered a likely place to find Viking treasure,
no evidence of this had ever been uncovered.
C. This was meant to be a temporary label, but it was so unique and memorable that it
became the actual product name.
D. In fact, when their device beeped, they assumed they had found a worthless piece
of scrap aluminium.
E. After the discovery was made and the experts had verified that it was likely something
important, the two amateur archaeologists were asked to keep quiet about their
find.

THE AUDITION

When Ella’s name was called by the assistant, she got up, glanced quickly at the other two
young women who were still waiting for their chance, then turned and went into the room to
her left. This was her first call-back audition for a part in a major West End production, and it
wasn’t what she had expected. Instead of a dusty off-season theatre or warehouse converted
to a rehearsal space, the auditions were taking place in a rented corporate office that felt
about as theatrical as a doctor’s surgery. The room she stepped into was obviously a
conference room, its long table shoved to the back and two women and a man in front of it.

“Please stand right there,” one woman said. Ella noticed an X taped to the floor and stood on
it. “Nice to see you again, by the way. Are you ready?”

This was the casting director she had seen for her first audition. Then she’d been friendly and
welcoming, but now she sounded tired and impatient. Perhaps the previous auditions hadn’t
been going well? The man to her left was the director, Victor Carson, one of the most powerful
figures in London theatre. He was wearing old jeans and a wrinkled shirt, and looked as if he
was about to nod off. Ella recognised the woman on the casting director’s other side as Lydia
Lawson, a powerful theatre and film producer.

“We’d like you to read the monologue on page twelve, please,” Victor Carson said. “Though
I have to say you don’t at all have the right look for the part. But surprise us.”

It was only when she started turning the pages of the script that Ella realised how violently her
hands were shaking. She was sure her three judges could hear the pages rattling from across
the room. Not only that, there was sweat running down her spine, and her breath was coming
in short, uneven bursts. Of course, she had experienced stage fright before student
productions, but she had learned to deal with it by controlling her breath and repeating the
mantra she had learned: Fear feeds your performance. Fear makes you dig deeper. But this
time nothing helped. She stared at the script, unable to read it. This was it. Her career was
over before it had even started.

“I…” She let out a long breath, and then she began to read. It was almost as if she had
stepped out of herself and into another body. As she continued, she glanced up and saw that
Victor Carson was now wide awake, and the other two looked on with expressions that
combined amazement and admiration.

HOW TO WIN AT AUDITIONS

Let’s be honest. No one likes the auditioning process, from beginners to seasoned actors to
the directors and producers who have to sit through them. It’s a highly artificial process,
putting an actor in front of a group of tired and grumpy professionals in a bare room and
expecting him or her to come out with a perfect performance. It’s stressful, and more often
than not it’s futile as well. The chances of an actor getting a job from an audition are tiny. But
still, it has to be done, and if you do it in the right spirit you might actually score the role that
could be the beginning of a long career.

The mistake that many young actors make when going to an audition is thinking they should
be playing a part from the moment they enter the room. Be confident and friendly, stand up
straight and show how relaxed and ready you are – even if you aren’t! – and don’t be fake. This
may seem like odd advice for an actor, since acting is in a way nothing but fakery, but that is
not what they want to see. Casting directors and the people who hire them are often looking
for actors to fill other roles than the one you are reading for, so if you show them who you
really are, how well you handle pressure, and your ability to collaborate and create something
fresh, they are likely to see you as someone they want to work with. Don’t dress up for the
part, use too many gestures or over-demonstrate your acting abilities. Actors who try too
hard to stand out can put casting directors off immediately. Instead, give a simple, sincere
and deeply-felt reading of the role – which you have studied well beforehand – and let your
talent speak for itself.

And one last thing. If you are afraid of having a visible case of stage fright, freezing up, or
making a fool of yourself, join the club. Some of the most experienced actors have stories of
nightmare auditions which led to some of their most admired roles. Just keep that in mind as
you stand shaking with fear in front of your judges, take a deep breath and do your best.

6.4. The writer of the second text believes that auditioning actors
A. shouldn’t pretend they can control their nerves.
B. should show casting directors their real personalities.
C. had better dress like the character they are playing.
D. don’t need to prepare for the part they are going to read.

6.5. In the second text, we learn that auditions

A. are a challenge mostly for inexperienced actors.
B. are probably not really necessary.
C. are harder for directors than for actors.
D. are likely to have surprising results.

READERS REACT TO LIFE AFTER LIFE BY KATE ATKINSON

A. I’m a real fan of the Jackson Brodie series by Kate Atkinson, so I couldn’t wait to read
this book. I admit that I nearly gave up. On the first page the main character is born and
dies in the same moment. Then she is born again, lives a short life, and dies again. And
so on. In one of her lives she is a spy during World War Two and actually shoots Adolf
Hitler. Maybe I’m just too attached to facts and reality to deal with this sort of fiction. It’s
beautifully written, but it was a struggle for me to suspend disbelief to that degree.

B. I try to approach novels with a totally open mind, so I avoid reading reviews and
descriptions. Coming at it with no preconceptions, I was completely amazed by this
novel. It is dreamlike, shocking and funny all at the same time, and it completely drew
me in. The descriptions of life at the beginning of the 20th century, a child’s view of the
First World War, and a young woman’s experiences of the Second World War brought
history to life for me. I’ve heard people say they couldn’t swallow the idea of Ursula’s
alternative lives, but I was totally enthralled. Highly recommended!

C. Certain authors write like nobody else, and Kate Atkinson certainly falls into that
category. My problem with Life After Life is that Atkinson seems to be at her most
peculiar, and as a result I didn’t find it believable. I felt that the author’s voice overwhelmed
the characters and plot, and the concept of alternative lives being lived by the same
person was just too clever. I admit that parts of the narrative are fascinating, and no one
can say Atkinson doesn’t write well, but the self-conscious oddness of this novel kept
me from really enjoying it.

FOOLED BY A FOOD PHOTOGRAPHER

I have always been curious about unusual foods and different styles of cooking. Even as
a young child I was puzzled when my friends refused grilled octopus or cried “No way!” when
they were offered some blood sausage. 5.1. _____ Even if I disliked it, I still wanted to know
all about it. My curiosity led me to becoming a food writer, which means endless chances to
try the new and unusual.

When I write for a specific publication, I’m often paired with a photographer who documents
the places, people and food of a region. Imagine my dismay when I discovered that my new
photographer had little interest in food. 5.2. _____ When questioned, he admitted that he
hadn’t willingly eaten a vegetable in years. As a photographer, he was fascinated by the
shapes and colours of food, but as to actually tasting it? “I’ll stick to what I know,” he said.

I was determined to change his mind. We were in Thailand, and I was researching the most
unusual restaurants in that food-rich country. 5.3. _____ I soon learned that he could resist
virtually anything. He would happily photograph the astonishing meals, then head straight to
the nearest western-style fast food place. Obviously, I thought my task was hopeless.

Then, one evening, when we were in a restaurant that served fish in a way that looked curiously
like fish and chips, James said, “Do you think I could try some of that?” 5.4. _____ And when
I offered him some spicy stir-fried vegetables he filled up his plate and ate it all. Had I just
witnessed an amazing transformation? I later learned that James was well-known as a practical
joker, and that I had fallen victim to a complicated trick. He was actually a more adventurous
eater than me, and that is truly saying something!

A. Surprised, I slid the plate in his direction. He didn’t even hesitate, but ate several
pieces.
B. Worse than that, he claimed to be horrified at the idea of eating anything beyond a
burger and fries or a slice of pizza.
C. He was so critical of the food that he even made the waiters uncomfortable.
D. Surely, he couldn’t refrain from tasting some of the beautifully presented dishes we
were offered, could he?
E. I, on the other hand, always jumped at the chance to try something new, and there
was very little I wouldn’t at least taste.

NO TURNING BACK

The train came to such a sudden stop that the book Lucy was holding flew out her hands and
landed at the feet of the man sitting opposite her. He glanced down, picked up the book and
handed it back to her. “Problem on the tracks,” he said. His voice was deep and impatient, as
if he had been a commander in the military, the sort who stood for no nonsense of any kind.
Yet the look in his blue eyes was gentle. “Not unusual around here. Nothing to worry about.”
Then he disappeared again behind his newspaper.

Lucy had not been reading at all. Instead she was worrying if she was making the biggest
mistake of her life. Just weeks out of secretarial college, she had accepted a job in a small
town in Scotland that she had never even heard of, as private secretary to a man she knew
nothing about. The complications of the train journey were making her even more anxious.
During the War, train travel had become less and less predictable. Stations were closed,
timetables became totally unreliable because of air raids and unexploded bombs, and a lack
of station staff added to the problems. She had started out from London at eight in the
morning. Nearly eight hours later, she was probably not even halfway to her destination.

Looking out the window, she saw a gloomy Midlands view that did nothing to reassure her.
She wondered briefly if she should get off at the next station and catch a train back to London
before it was too late. Of course, if she did, she might have to wait all night for a train, and
then where would she go when she got back to the city? She had given up her room in Mrs.
Weatherby’s house, and her family were now scattered all over Britain. There was nothing for
it but to go on and face the facts of her new job. She had been told that she would be picked
up by her employer’s driver when she got to Edinburgh, and just the idea of a ride in a
comfortable private car almost made the prospect seem worthwhile.

The train let out a loud, grinding noise, then began to move slowly forward. The man opposite
her lowered his newspaper and smiled kindly across at her. “I shouldn’t worry if I were you,”
he said. “Things do usually work out for the best, you know. You see, even this endless war is
about to be over.”

GET THE MOST OUT OF UK TRAIN TRAVEL

What is likely to shock visitors to the UK is the exorbitant price of a ticket on a British train.
Up until the 1990s, ticket prices were kept artificially low with government aid. But now that
all the trains are run by private companies, fares have increased enormously. There are ways
to save that are not well known even amongst the British, however, and they are worth
considering if you plan to spend time travelling around the UK by rail.

The least-known trick is called “split-ticketing”, and it’s certainly not something you would
think up on your own because, to be honest, it doesn’t make much sense. Rail companies
admit that the old-fashioned ticketing system has created a situation where buying one ticket
for a long journey can cost up to 90% more than buying several tickets for separate parts of
the same journey. Of course, you don’t have to get off the train at the in-between stations,
even if one of your tickets says that is your destination. Just sit back and enjoy your savings.

Another way to save money is to book well ahead of your trip. A limited number of Advance
tickets are made available up to 12 weeks before departure, so if you have a definite travel
plan, you can book now and save enormously. As a bonus, you can receive online notifications
of when tickets for particular trips go on sale. And in some cases, you can even buy Advance
tickets the day before a trip or, on some lines, just 15 minutes before boarding your train!

Other ways to save are choosing the time of day when you travel and choosing a slower route
– which is ideal for visitors hoping to see some scenery on the way!

QUESTION OF THE DAY: IS THERE TOO MUCH MONEY IN SPORTS?

OUR READERS GIVE THEIR OPINIONS.

A. I’m not sure if there’s too much money in sports. After all, it takes a lot of money to keep
the best players, provide good training and have an appealing venue. A lot of people
say that professional athletes are over-paid, but when you consider how short their
careers are, I think they deserve to make enough to support themselves later in life. This
might seem illogical after what I’ve just said, but I do think tickets to sporting events are
too expensive. Some of the people who would be most inspired by sporting events
can’t afford to attend.

B. I totally agree that there is too much money in sports. There is so much focus on high
pay for players, their expensive lifestyles, that the feeling of team spirit and fair
competition seems to be disappearing. I’d rather watch a group of teenagers playing
basketball in the park than a professional game, because at least they’re having fun.
Unfortunately, the money culture in sports gives these teenagers unrealistic expectations
too. They dream of being “discovered” and becoming rich and famous like their sports
heroes instead of focusing on their studies, which is the real route to having a good
future.

C. I am keen on watching sports, and I attend as many matches as possible. Of course, the
tickets are quite costly for me, but I understand that it’s very expensive to present
sporting events, therefore, the amounts we pay don’t seem unreasonable. On the other
hand, I dislike the way sports teams have become status symbols for super rich people.
Obviously, some of them really care about their team, but others are just trying to show
off their wealth. I think this damages the idea of sports as something you do out of love
and passion, and I wish all teams belonged to the people they represent.

POLITICIANS IN THE HOUSE

Many people have asked me what it was like growing up with parents who were both involved
in politics, and this has led me to think about what made my upbringing unique. 5.1. _____ My
father was involved locally, first on the city council and later as the mayor of our small city.
They were very committed to their roles, and they worked very hard indeed.

Possibly the most unique aspect of the situation was that they belonged to different political
parties. 5.2. _____ I soon learned not to take sides, but to act as a sort of mediator. This meant
trying to change the subject, but with two passionate politicians in the house, I didn’t often
succeed.

Friends who visited me and my sister were quite intimidated by our parents, but they also
found them pretty amusing. Instead of shouting at us to quiet down, they would say “Order,
please!” which all of us found hilarious. 5.3. _____ From her tone, you would think we were
one of her parliamentary committees.

Besides the strong opinions and odd expressions, the thing that stands out most to me is how
busy my parents were. My mother was rarely at home for more than a day or two at a time,
and then she was on the phone or reading important papers. My father was constantly being
rung up by council members and business people with requests and demands.

Looking back, my sister and I agree that our parents were not really our own for a number of
years. 5.4. _____ I admire them and am still amazed that they made as much time for us as
they did. Our family holidays were sacred, and those were the times that bonded us together
as a family and kept our mutual love and respect alive.

A. They belonged to the public, and we had to accept that. Mind you, I don’t blame my
parents.
B. When we were planning an outing, my mother would ask us formally if we had
reached a consensus and if any mediation would be of help.
C. The worst part of it was that they would ask our opinions about issues we had never
even heard about, and then show their disappointment that we were so ill-informed.
D. This led to some quite loud “discussions” in our household. They didn’t want them
to be called rows, though I have to say I couldn’t see the difference.
E. My mother was a Member of Parliament, and later on became a Minister and quite
a powerful force in government.

YOU CAUGHT WHAT?

When my family and I were on holiday in Florida, we decided to go deep-sea fishing. My

father was already an enthusiastic fisherman, but for the rest of us fishing was truly a novelty.
We had already done the theme parks, luxury shopping and other amusements on offer to
visitors to Florida, so this seemed like a pleasant shift of focus and a chance to get out onto
the water without having to exert the amount of energy water-skiing or diving would demand.

The boat trip was lovely. The water was calm, and the hazy blue sky made silvery reflections
on the water, which I found very calming. Unfortunately, the fishing aspect of the outing was
not so relaxing. As a total beginner, I kept getting my line tied up in knots. When I came close
to landing a hook in my brother’s ear instead of the sea, one of the guides volunteered to get
it into the water for me. Then all I had to do was wait… and wait.

Eventually I felt a pull on my line. I was so surprised that I nearly dropped the fishing rod, but
again the guide came to my rescue and helped me bring in whatever it was I had caught.
When my catch was laid out, all we could do was stare. It did not look like a fish at all. It was
long and skinny, with pinkish skin and a big, toothless mouth. It actually looked a bit like the
drawings you see of prehistoric sea creatures which later grew legs and walked out of the sea.
The guide called the other crew members over, but none of them had ever seen anything like
it either. Had I found an entirely new species without even trying?

We gave the fishing guide our contact information, but we were not really surprised not to
have heard from him by the time we left Florida the following weekend. We were taken aback
when, some time after our return to the UK, we received a postcard from our fishing guide.
A biologist had identified our bizarre catch, which was called a Jellynose. These are usually
found on the sea-bottom, and are very rarely seen even by professional fishermen, so why this
creature ended up on my fish hook remains a mystery.

NEW OCEAN ZONE DISCOVERED

We sometimes assume that every part of the earth has been explored, and that most of the
species on it have been studied. But when you consider that there are more than 100,000
underwater mountains across the globe, and that the life on fewer than 50 of them has been
recorded, it is clear how little we know.

An ocean zone which no one knew existed, and which is home to more than 100 previously
unknown species, has recently been explored by a group from Oxford University. This area is
known as the “rare light” zone and it extends from 130 metres to 300 metres in depth. This
new discovery adds one more to the list of five previously identified zones. Finding an entirely
new ocean zone which is filled with so many life forms shows that there could be far more
ocean species to discover, and of a greater variety than was previously thought.

The survey team spent hundreds of hours exploring. The new species they discovered include
microscopic shell fish, dozens of algae species, and a very tall black coral. Oxford professor
and scientific director of the exploration team, Alex Rogers, pointed out that the discovery
came as a huge surprise as the Bermudian waters had been relatively well examined for many
years. Nobody expected that so numerous and diverse new species existed there.

The group’s chief executive, Oliver Steeds, mentioned that twenty-four people had been to
the moon, even played golf on the moon, but only three people had ever been down to the
lowest point of the Earth, to the full ocean depth of 11,000 metres. He emphasised that the
technology available nowadays allows for deep ocean exploration and for discovering more
of our planet than ever before.

One point only briefly mentioned in our interview is why these explorations need to be done
in the very near future. After all, most of these areas have gone unexplored for centuries. But
with recent temperature and chemical changes in the water, species could die out before
humans have had the chance to study them. When you consider that all life probably has its
origins in the oceans, researchers do not want to miss their chance.
adapted from https://www.telegraph.co.uk/science

6.3. The discovery of the “rare light” zone

A. confirms the difficulty of exploring the Bermudian waters.
B. contributed to identifying five more similar zones.
C. brings attention to the undiscovered species living in the depth.
D. has changed the way scientists carry out ocean exploration.

6.4. Oliver Steeds mentions the moon to show that

A. it has received more attention than our oceans.
B. we have learned little from its exploration.
C. it is more difficult to reach than the deep oceans.
D. moon and ocean exploration share similar technologies.

6.5. According to the author, exploring the deep oceans is important because
A. it can confirm what we already know about ocean life.
B. it can help complete our knowledge of life on earth.
C. it can help solve urgent environmental problems.
D. it can give us ideas about life on other planets.
