The few Communists who have tried to find a ground for Communist
ethics have taken two different routes. Some have argued that later
historical stages are always superior to earlier ones. This argument,
however, is basically an assumption, not a proof. Others have argued
that there is a human nature with sound, true interests. The demand
that these needs be fulfilled begets ethics. This argument, of course,
must admit that there are needs which are not sound but diseased, not
true but apparent.
For a brief, informed view of Communist moral theory, this book is
excellent.
