Conference Program Promises to be
Stimulating and Challenging

The conference is built around three keynote addresses and three forms of interactive small group
sessions. Jesuit Superior General, Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., on Friday night, will give the
keynote address "Faith and Justice in Jesuit Higher Education". John Hume will speak Thursday
night on "Peace and Justice in the New World Order". Hume received a Nobel Peace Prize for
brokering the historic peace settlement in Northern Ireland. Claire L. Gaudini, President at
Connecticut College and the New London Development Corporation, will speak Saturday morning
on the topic of "The University as Just Citizen in its Community".

The interactive sessions will consist of: Topic Sessions on Friday, which will have a 10 - 15 minute
presentation followed by facilitated discussion; Interest Groups on Saturday, where peers can
gather to exchange ideas; and, Model Programs on Saturday, where conference participants can
learn about specific justice programs that are working well in other universities. Open Space
opportunities will be facilitated throughout the conference to allow interested groups to convene
their own discussion sessions.

The primary outcome of this conference is expected to be a joint statement of principles and an
action agenda for each university in promoting justice in Jesuit higher education into the next
millennium. It is expected that conference participants will hear the keynote addresses, and
participate in the interactive sessions. Information gathered in these sessions will be taken to
Sunday morning meetings where university delegations will list strategies and next steps for what to
do when they return home.

Deadline for Lists of University Delegations is April 1, 2000

University Contacts to Finish the Recruitment Process This Month

_ Each University can send a delegation of up to 10 members. This number includes AVP=s who
will be attending.
_ Delegations should consist of 70% faculty and 30% non-faculty.
_ Several University officials are expected to attend the justice conference Ex- Officio - Presidents,
Rectors, A&S Deans and Assoc. Deans. This means they may be, but do not need to be, counted
among the 10 delegation members.
_ Names and addresses of the ex officio participants will be gotten from their AJCU organizations.
_ Our presumption is that delegates will know who they are and will be anticipating receiving the
conference registration material in the mail.
_ Please indicate whether you think the delegate would make a good facilitator or presenter. We
will follow-up with any requests of them to serve in that capacity.
_ Delegation lists should include the name, phone number, e-mail address, Department, and an
address where the person can be reached after May 1.

University Presidents, AVP=s Rectors, and A&S Deans and Associate Deans plan annual
meetings at Santa Clara to precede the justice conference
The AJCU organizations of Presidents, AVP=s, Rectors and Arts and Sciences Deans and Associate
Deans have all decided to hold their Fall 2000 meetings at Santa Clara to facilitate their attendance
at Santa Clara=s 150 Anniversary celebrations and the October justice conference. We cannot know
at this time how many of them will remain to attend the full conference or even part of the
conference. We will be sending the conference registration materials to each of them.
We are working here at Santa Clara to set up separate housing arrangements for these AJCU groups;
housing in which they will be able to remain for the duration should they choose to register for the
conference. This information will be communicated with these groups by their own AJCU leaders.
This fact has caused confusion in some people=s minds as to the makeup of the ten person
delegations allotted for each university. The problem arises principally with universities who have
more than ten persons whom they want to attend the conference. Some members of their
delegations were to be Deans or AVP=s or Rectors.
Some clarification is in order.
1) Each University is allowed a ten person delegation. (The reason for this is space limitations.) The
ten person delegations were originally to have included AVP=s in the count. That fact remains true.
Your count of ten includes any AVP=s planning to attend the conference.
2) Presidents, Rectors, A&S Deans and Associate Deans may be, but do not have to be included in
the ten person delegation count. We will consider that they are attending ex officio. So, if that
allows you to increase the overall number attending, then you may do so.
This makes perfectly good sense. Right?!
