Please Note: Repertoire requirements for the Pre-Screening recording and the Live Audition are
the same. Applicants may choose to play different pieces at the Live Audition from those
submitted on the Pre-Screen recording.
DMA Level:
1. One movement of a major violin concerto
2. Two contrasting movements OR the Chaconne of J.S. Bach Sonata or Partita for solo violin
3. One movement of a sonata for violin and piano OR one short virtuosic piece for solo violin or
for violin and piano
4. One movement of a work for solo violin or violin and piano written after 1945

 A complete unaccompanied Bach sonata or partita.
• A complete standard concerto.
• A standard sonata with piano (preferably from a different style period).

Temple
 •Two contrasting movements of a concerto from the standard repertory with cadenza, if
applicable
  Examples: Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, etc.
 •Two movements of an unaccompanied Partita or Sonata of J.S. Bach, or only the Ciaconna
from Partita no. 2
 •A Paganini Caprice, or movement from the solo Sonatas of Ysäye
 •One movement of a 19th or 20th century Sonata for Violin and Piano

1. A complete concerto from the 19th-, 20th-, 21st-century.


2. A complete Bach sonata or partita. No repeats please, unless ornamented.
3. A sonata for violin and piano. If the Beethoven Concerto is chosen for No. 1, a Romantic
or 20th- or 21st-century sonata should be played.
4. Two contrasting brilliant concert pieces.
5. Two Paganini caprices.
6. A complete concerto by Mozart. The candidate is strongly encouraged to offer his or her
own cadenzas.

For Prescreening:

The applicant must submit their prescreening online, and it must contain 45 to 60 minutes of
music representing different styles and historical periods. If reviewed favorably, the applicant
will be invited to campus. Candidates should plan to be on campus for the entire day.

For Final Audition:

If invited to campus, the applicant will perform for and interview with a music faculty jury.
Candidates are expected to prepare 60 minutes of music appropriate for the doctoral level.
Selections should represent various styles and historical periods from the standard repertoire.
The audition will last approximately 30 minutes. The applicant should perform selections used in
the prescreening, but can also bring additional repertoire. Candidates should print the list of
prepared audition selections and bring this to the audition.

Prepare three complete works of contrasting nature demonstrating your highest level of artistry.
An accompanist is required for all auditions
Peabody
 Complete Major Violin Concerto
 1st movement of a Mozart Concerto with cadenza
 Bach: 1st two movements of a Bach Sonata or Chaconne, or complete Partita
 One Paganini Caprice, Wieniawski Caprice, or equivalent
 Choice of any sonata or solo piece
 Any work from the late 20th or 21st century.

NEC

1. Complete major concerto for violin and orchestra written between 1800 and 1945.
Stravinsky Concerto and Shostakovich Concerto No. 1 are also acceptable. (memorized)
2. Complete unaccompanied work for violin by J.S. Bach (memorized)
3. Two Paganini Caprices (memorized)
4. Complete sonata for violin and piano, of contrasting style from the selected concerto
