Theory:

Figure 10-1: Single Phase AC controller

Figure 10-1 shows single phase AC controller. As shown in the picture, SCR is connected by
antiparallel at the same time, gate signal circuit gives a signal to S1 lagged by as much as α and
another signal to S2 lagged half cycle than S1 at zero cross point of power supply voltage
v.
lf polarity of power supply is positive (+), S1 is forward biased and S2 is reverse biased. That’s why
power supply and load are connected by S1 from θ=α ¿ θ=π and connected by S2 from
θ=α + π ¿ θ=2 π. The output and relevant gate signal is shown in Figure 10-2.

When R-L load is used in Figure 10-1, coil has a series circuit of resistance R and inductance L as
shown in Figure 10-3. lf the current iL, flows from power supply to load, input current is extended
beyond θ=π because the current iL, is inductance load current which can’t become 0 instantaneously.
The current instead becomes 0 at a later time at θ=β which is called the extinction angle. The larger
the value of L, the larger the β. The waveform is shown in Figure 10-4.

The rms output voltage is given by:

V rms =
1

2π α
V 2 id(wt )=V
1
π√( β−α )+
sin 2 α −sin 2 β

Working Procedure:
1. Measurement of Sig-In Terminal Voltage: Connect the circuit as shown and record the
waveform.

2. Measurement of V-Ref terminal: Connect the circuit as shown and record the waveform by
adjusting the Volt-Variable Knob. Set the knob at 50% and record waveform.

3. Measurement of Freq terminal: Connect the circuit as shown and record the waveform by
adjust phase-variable knob. Set the knob at 60%, record waveform and compare with (d) in
Figure 10-6

4. Measurement of input power: Connect the circuit as shown and record the waveform.

5. Measurement of SCR gate terminal: Connect the circuit as shown and record the waveform
of S2 gate terminal. Connect similarly with S1 for recording the waveform at the gate of S1

6. Measurement of R Load: Connect the circuit as shown and record the waveform by adjusting
the Volt-Variable knob and Phase-Variable knob.

7. Measurement with R-L Load: Connect the circuit as shown and record the waveform by

Measured Results:
Observe, measure and record the waveform of the input voltage and the output voltage from steps 1-8
in working procedure. Plot them neatly in your graph paper.
Home Works:
1. Explain why the output wave shapes are different from each other in the steps 6 and 7.
2. Comment on how the output wave shapes changed due to change in firing angle α.
3. Explain the difference between cyclo converter and this converter.
